The Forest Maiden and her Animal Friends

In-Fur-Nation - Sun 30 Sep 2012 - 19:00

Jonathan Luna is best known for hooking up with his brother Joshua Luna to create well-known comic book series like The Sword and Ultra. Now Jonathan has gone out on his own to create a hardcover illustrated book for young readers, Star Bright and the Looking Glass. “When Star Bright, a forest maiden, encounters an evil sorceress who steals her beauty and youth, she must embark on a dangerous journey with her animal friends — Toad, Owl, and Capybara — to retrieve it.” Look for this new book from Image Comics in early December, or you can pre-order it from Barnes & Noble.

Furcadia, anyone?

Furry Reddit - Sun 30 Sep 2012 - 18:11

Hey guys! I've been in the fandom for a ridiculously long time and for some reason I've never heard of anyone really talking about Furcadia. I hear things about other online communities such as Second Life all the time, but never about the good ol' Furcadia. I know its an older community but there seems to be thousands that still play it (according to their site). I was wondering is there a reason for never hearing about it? Is it not really a furry community or is it dying out or what? Thanks so much!

Fox Wants a Wolf Who Is Mated

Ask Papabear - Sun 30 Sep 2012 - 15:00
Dear Papa Bear,

A few months ago I joined a fur group locally. It has been an experience and I've moved from being a lurker to an active furry. I even have a partial for an alternate fursona and a full one coming up. I picked up drawing again and I enjoy it so much! My problem is before this started up a whirlwind it was because of one fur that I met that I even got to where I am. This wolf completely toss my world around and I have such great friends now and life has been generally a great place. I will admit... I fell hard for this wolf...just being around him...makes my heart beat heavy... long story short he eventually found out how I felt and I have shared a few moments where I could feel a spark between us. The problem being... he has a mate. Now I'm not asking about how do I steal him (even though a fox could try lol) and we've gotten through a lot already. The issue I want to ask you is because of where I live I can't separate myself from him because he's apart of my local fur group and attends many of the events that we plan. I can't remove myself from him completely even if I wanted to... Papa Bear... What does a fox like me do? *cue Chasing Pavements - Adele*

* * *

Hi, Adele,

Since you already know it wouldn’t be right to steal him away from his mate (assuming you could do so)—and it’s a good thing you realize that!—the question becomes, “How can I not get all bewitched, bothered, and bewildered around this wolf every time I see him?”

The answer is simple, but not easy: find someone of your own to love. Then, you will love that person and the wolf will no longer hold a gravitational pull for you. Oh, sure, that interest may take a little while to fade, but if you truly love another then your focus will eventually be on your new love and it will be fine that you and the wolf find yourselves in the same furry circles.

That would be Papabear’s first word on the subject. But you also mentioned that “spark” between the two of you. Was that mutual? or was that just you being hopeful that he returned your amorous feelings? If it really was mutual it is worth investigating further.

So many people who write to Papabear have questions simply because they haven’t spoken directly with the other parties involved in their problems. You know this wolf has a mate, but I have heard the term “mate” thrown around a lot, especially in the fandom, sometimes seriously, sometimes not so much. Is this a real, deep, passionate, exclusive matehood? Is it more casual? Is it new or long-established? Obviously, you don’t want to get in the way of true love, but, to go the other extreme, sometimes people pair up with others just to not be alone, and sometimes people are very unhappy with their current relationship.

You didn’t give Papabear enough information to make a good judgment call on that, so you will have to figure that part on your own. While you and I both know that breaking up a couple who are truly in love and monogamous is flat-out wrong, on the other paw if the relationship isn’t that serious and the two of you could have something more powerful and meaningful, then you have a right to explore that, too.

It’s also possible, as has been mentioned in this column before, that a polyamorous relationship might develop. If everyone consents to that and is open to it, everyone could win, but it can be a difficult row to hoe, as they say.

So, talk to the wolf. Tell him your feelings. The worst that can happen is that you are back where you started; they best is that you find out he actually has stronger feelings for you than for his current mate. You’ll never know unless you ask.

Good luck,
Papabear

Show your appreciation of our vulpine friends this Foxtober!

Furry Reddit - Sun 30 Sep 2012 - 14:19

What is Foxtober, you ask? It’s a celebration of all things vulpine, whether they be anthropomorphic or feral, real or fantasy! Yes, foxes are as common as air in the furry fandom, but that doesn’t mean they can’t get their own special month of appreciation. So this coming month of October, draw some fox art, make some fox music, write a fox story, or just hug a fox and let them know they’re loved. <3

Super Lucky Fun Time Number One! Things lead off with a Monkey Island reference, so you know it’s gonna be a good show. We launch headlong into discussion topics, from a new artist who was pretty cool to Smokey to Halfwit’s word of the week and the way her desk at work became Spider Central, to the average quality of SoFurry’s story (and a pining for the days of quality control) and a bit of lamenting over the overuse of Gangnam Style. Kyo’s vag – did we mention that Kyo’s vag is on the show this week instead of the entire thing, due to RainFurrest? – discusses how to manage your employees and gives example of the right way vs. the wrong way, and other insanity ensues forthwith!

Once we get into the e-mails, it’s time to stop joking around…okay, it’s never time to stop joking around, but we do focus on the topic! We talk about how to get help if you’re feeling blue, difficulty getting up in the mornings due to depression, and exercise (and apparently, Istanbul’s failure to do so correctly). There’s further mention of meditation, religion, mortality, and other similarly lightweight topics before we move on to discussing getting involved in the fandom, acknowledging the people who produce something you appreciate (so easy!) and dealing with people you can’t help, whether it’s because it’s impossible or because they don’t actually want help.

Next week’s topic is all about balancing your furry and non-furry life. Do you keep separate groups of friends, some of whom know you’re into furry and some don’t? Do you avoid merging the two, do you actively seek to merge the two, or do you not give a twist either way? Got some tips for how to keep them apart or put them together, either way? Let us know!

Have a quick click here to see an up-and-coming artist that was mentioned on the show today, and offer some of that appreciation we were talking about!

Retrospective: Seymour Eaton’s ‘The Roosevelt Bears’

Furry News Network - Sun 30 Sep 2012 - 06:25
Author: Fred From 1905 for about the next twenty years, Seymour Eaton’s anthropomorphic bears were the subject of some of the most popular children’s books in America. Their topical popularity was due to the tie-in between the bears and Teddy Roosevelt during the 1900s when TR was President of the U.S., and the 1910s when [...]

So I'm starting a subreddit, /r/chakat...

Furry Reddit - Sun 30 Sep 2012 - 05:38

I'm quite frankly surprised that when I searched all of Reddit's history for the term chakat, the only articles I found were some posts made by users with the word chakat in their name. So I began /r/chakat a few moments ago.

They're not as common as they used to be (say) ten years ago, but chakats are still out and about in the fandom.... hopefully for a good long while to come.

I'm not really surprised that my...latest work is so popular. But I'd rather have people prefer my clean art than my hot ones. Don't you?

Furry Reddit - Sun 30 Sep 2012 - 01:38

So my latest drawing is a mature piece and what do ya know? In one day it's the most popular piece I have so far. I don't mind it. It spreads my name around. But I prefer having people faving and commenting about my Clean pieces than my mature works. Course furaffinity being what it is, not easy to do.

UGA FURS?

Furry Reddit - Sat 29 Sep 2012 - 22:12

Ok this is the only place I can think to find this person. So here it goes. I swear on my life I saw a fursuiter in the student section at the University of Georgia vs Tennessee game today (9/29/12). This is the only place I could think to find this person so if you are this person or know something about him/her the help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if way too specific for /r/furry.
