A question about the morality of using copyrighted characters on commissions.

Furry Reddit - Wed 26 Sep 2012 - 22:06

Hello /r/furry, this is my first post here (although I have been commenting for quite a while).

I'm an aspiring artist and writer, and I have a question regarding the morality of commissions using third-party characters. A commission may be a reference sheet / completely new design for someone's character, a scene featuring some furry's character(s) or also mixing in OCs with established characters (Pokemon, etc.).

Let's say, if you were a talented artist and some fur asked you to do a picture of his fursona with Renamon as a commission (a classic furry cliché), would you accept it? I know the majority of us would say yes, but I'm still concerned about using copyrighted character designs for profits. I know a commission is simply the payment you receive for doing something, but I do somehow have mixed feelings on doing this.

I'm aware fan-art seems to have a "fair-use" license on dA / FA, etc. and there is no problem in using copyrighted pictures as avatars there, I just see this as some sort of 'indirect piracy' or sorta.

TL;DR: Doing a character design for someone else to use permanently and receive payment: no problem. Drawing a copyrighted character (Disney, Pokemon, etc.) as a commission for some fan: dunno. What do you think?

EDIT: I don't talk about morality here as in "feeling bad on drawing an official character to get personal profits", but also its legal status.

Halp? *Kinda?*

Furry Reddit - Wed 26 Sep 2012 - 19:57

Well, hello all. I'm Anon. I'm a 16 year old guy furry, and have been for the last year. I wan't to meet other furs, but I'm a man of many groups at school. All of them hate the ideas of furrys. I'm reluctant to come out at school, but I love the fandom and the people in it! I live in Stratford Ontario, the place where J'Biebs came from, and I don't think there are many *or any * furs here. There's no conventions or anything, or get together that i'm aware of which sucks :/

The Femme Feline

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 26 Sep 2012 - 19:48

Contropussy is… well it’s hard to explain right off.  It’s a web comic, we know that much, co-written by actress Emma Caulfield (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Camilla Rantsen, with art by Christian Meesey and Thomas Mauer. And now it’s an upcoming trade paperback collection from IDW Publishing. “By day, Contropussy is an ordinary house cat, but at night she comes alive and searches for excitement in the world outside. In this installment Contropussy has a wild night out. The next day, however, she must save her friend from Evil Rabbit and her minions!” IDW should have this full-color collection out in November. Meanwhile, Pink Ray Gun has an in-depth look at the story of the web comic.

Hey r/furry, what're some of the most important things to consider in developing a character?

Furry Reddit - Wed 26 Sep 2012 - 19:23

So the anthro art student organization at my school is hosting a character development workshop tomorrow, so I'm curious; What do you think are some of the more important things to consider when developing a character/fursona? This could apply to any aspect of character creation from concept, to drawing, to costuming, etc.

Furry literature!

Furry Reddit - Wed 26 Sep 2012 - 18:11

Alright guys/girls, it's time for our weekly literature thread. Just finished Track and field by Buckwulf and oh my, it was brilliant. If you have any that you would like submit, you can do so in the comments. Doesn't have to be sfw but if it does have Yiff in it, it would be nice to mark it. I look forward to reading the books that you sugest!

Just curious about your sonas.

Furry Reddit - Wed 26 Sep 2012 - 15:35

Would anyone like to share their fursonas because scrolling through this sub it seems like I might be the only normal animal (the most interesting I've seen being a snow leopard griffon). Is it really so abnormal to just be a tabby cat? What are some of your fursonas or the weirdest you've heard of/seen?

SoFurry is SoHot

DailyFurBlog - Wed 26 Sep 2012 - 13:07

Well if you’re a fan of stories, art, music and photographs you may have bookmarked “SoFurry.com” . This site is chalk full of easy to read and look at fandom culture. I think yes, even the knotty stuff is scatted around the place too. Why do I bring this all up? Because, they just graduated their site to a newer version and it’s pretty bad-ass. Head over and see why this site should be a #1 furry fandom stop on your web ride.
