Hello,

Back in 2013 I posted here about a survey titled “Furry/FurFandom Digital Spaces”. This survey and any interviews which were carried out as a result of it, formed part of the research for my undergraduate geography dissertation for Keele University, UK.

I am this post now to thank those who took part for the contributions they made to the project. The final version of the report was submitted to the university in February 2014, after 14 months of work, which would not have been possible without the contributions that you all made, and for that I am eternally grateful.

Due to the way the system works it’s taken a while for me to be able to write this status update post and provide access to the report. The provisional mark for this project is 81%, and I hope I’ve done justice to the time the community has given me. The positive experience I have had working with the community on this project has made a huge impression and contributed towards my decision to pursue this kind of research further into postgraduate studies.

Abstract

This project investigates the spatiality of digital community through the use of a case study on the Furry Fandom. Given the lack of geographic literature on digital spatiality it relies on work from other disciplines, supported by geographic theories of relationally constructed social space. The Furry Fandom is a predominantly digital community that has strong ties in physical space in the form of its convention culture, resulting in a more focused relationship between physical and digital space. The research was conducted using a survey and individual interviews with members of the community who were accessed through the communities digital spaces, since this gave access to the largest possible sample population. The technologies which enable the existence of digital space have enabled the Furries to exist since they provide a level of distance which allows individual’s constructed fursonas to come to the fore, interact and form community space. A combination of relational space theory and the spatial triad is used to illustrate the formation of the social space of the Furry community both within the physical and digital. The study’s overarching conclusion is that community social space has become much more imagined and abstract.

I have a friend who's terrified of furries after a fateful encounter on a stuck elevator, and I have yet to reveal to him that I am a furry. How should I calm his nerves enough to approach the subject?

yes i am doing another one of these because i am pure garbage and i'd like to think that i've improved some from last time :> i'm also wallowing in an artblock so any motivation at this points would be fantastic i'll only do headshots this time so i can do them quicker and work on expressions! :D please please link me to a ref and specify what expression you would like? thank you<3

Hey furs! I'm looking to shape up my art, so I'm offering free headshot sketches of whatever furry character you want. One per person, and you are not guaranteed a sketch. I will probably stop at around 10-15 sketches, but you never know!
