Movie Review: Alpha & Omega

Alpha & Omega
This film follows two young wolves, Kate and Humphrey, starting off as childhood friends on the day Kate is set to begin her training as an Alpha female of the wolf pack. Come Spring Kate has finished her Alpha training and is next seen on her first hunt going after Caribou. This hunt is interrupted by another pack of wolves from the East which causes a conflict. Humphrey as an Omega is meant to keep the peace and make others laugh, he quickly defuses the conflict. Kate soon discovers that her father and the Alpha of the eastern pack have made a deal to unite the two packs by marrying Kate and the Eastern packs young male Alpha. That night Kate and Garth are introduced, Kate is very much put off by Garth when he begins to howl at the moon horribly, dropping birds from the sky. After getting away from Garth, Kate runs into Humphrey and begins trying to convince him she’s not running away from Garth. Eventually Kate is hit with a tranquilizer followed shortly by Humphrey. The two wake up after being relocated to Idaho to repopulate wolves at a park there. Kate convinces Humphrey to help her get home and adventure ensues. In the end Garth and Kate are about to be married when Kate backs out. Kate has fallen in love with Humphrey which leads to a battle between to two packs. In the end Kate and Humphrey are together with Humphrey having protected Kate during a stampede of Caribou.
This movie flows well from beginning to end, it keeps you interested from the very beginning to the very end. The best part about this film is the writers actually asked experts about and observed wild wolves in order to understand the pack structure. Toward the end Humphrey is about to do what many Omegas do, take the lone wolf route. This in nature eventually leads to the formation of a new pack, but for the purposes of this film they couldn’t have that happen. All in all an excellent film that does a good job debunking many of the common misconceptions concerning wolf pack structure that were first documented by scientists when they took unrelated wolves from the wild and introduced them to a new pack unlike anything nature would produce. This film is dedicated to the memory of Dennis Hopper, his last film role before his death. I highly recommend this film to adults and children both.

Get ShareaholicSouth Afrifur 2010 report
Author: Rakuen Growlithe
Although South Africa has a small number of furs, with just under 200 registered users on the ZAfur forum, it does hold an annual, national furmeet, South Afrifur. As there are so few furs in South Africa the meet is intended to gather as many as possible together, once a year, to get to know one another.
The first South Afrifur meet was held in Cape Town and was organised primarily by Dracius. In 2009 the meet was intended for Johannesburg but was cancelled by the organisers.
The 2010 meet, organised by Nanukk, Electrocat and Cat147, was held in Port Elizabeth from 7–15 January 2011. The meet was hosted by Nanukk and attended by about 14 furs from around South Africa, though that varied from day-to-day.

Do furries accept ABDL's as much as the other way around?
I have found in different regions of the world that fur's and abdl's get along better and worse in some areas. In Vancouver for example, babyfurs tend to be all but completely shunned, whereas in London they are sort of like cousins.
I'll leave it at that for now. I was just curious on this worldwide forum what the acceptance is in your region and at furcons.

Fox shoots hunter in Belarus
In an ironic twist of fate that seems straight out of fiction, a hunter in the Eastern European country of Belarus was reportedly shot with his own gun by a fox he was hunting.
The “fantastic” fox involved happened to pull the trigger of the hunter’s rifle at the right moment, when the hunter tried to finish it off with the butt of the rifle. The hunter is recovering in a hospital from a gunshot wound to the leg, while the fox, though previously injured in the ordeal, has retreated to the woods.

Get ShareaholicFA turns six; promises new layout, fixes in May
Fur Affinity turned six this weekend, offering a preview of a new site template to go live May 21, plus a commission system with integrated ratings.
Site owner Dragoneer has promised that underlying security issues will be fixed too:
Things have been slack in the coding department, and we know that. It’s time for a change, and we’re long overdue. We’re going to fix that. [...] The vulnerabilities will be fixed between now and then, and some of them require complete system re-writes
However, offers to help with these vulnerabilities have been rebuffed for now. It is also not the first time that a new layout has been promised.

Get ShareaholicFlayrah marks a decade of furry news
Ten years ago today, Aureth launched Flayrah.com, a service providing “news, commentary, reviews, interviews, and user interactivity.”
A lot has changed since then. Furry conventions have grown four-fold, both in size and number. A multitude of comics, artists and websites have come and gone. Many fans have left the community for good – and many more have joined us and made it their home.
But the need for a good source of furry news remains.

Get ShareaholicLondon daily paper covers surge in animal costumers

Dress up: taking fur to a whole new level
Author: GreenReaper
The London Evening Standard, a free daily newspaper, has run a piece on animal costumers.
Included in the coverage are kigurumi wearers and makers, local furs Lupus and Jackal, and professional animal costumer Alex Kovas – better known as “Humanimal“. Mentioned in passing is local convention RBW and the regular LondonFur meets.
Like the recent Halifax article, the newspaper contacted furs beforehand; Lupus admitted to using the opportunity to “[give] them what we wanted to give them.”

Get ShareaholicFurther Confusion 2012 to be held in convention center
Further Confusion 2011 took place last weekend. Attendance was almost static at 2801, perhaps due to the continued weak state of the economy plus limited room; the Fairmont sold out by October. 477 participated in the fursuit parade, as verified by Flayrah in the dealers’ room.
$ 31,900 was raised by the sale of nearly 500 pieces, in an art auction consisting of almost 1000, while 113 dealers were present in the Den. The show suffered from poor lighting, but con leaders promised this would not be an issue in future years.
As for 2012, the big news is that FC intends to move to the San Jose Convention Center.
