The Power of the Animals

In-Fur-Nation - Fri 21 Oct 2011 - 01:59

Shaman’s Tears was a 12-issue full-color comic book miniseries written and drawn by Mike Grell in the 1990′s, published back then by Image. It told the story of one Joshua Brand, a native American who discovers he has the ability to harness the power of animals — and of the earth itself. He often used his powers in defense of nature, animals… and mutant animal-people, who showed up after escaping from government laboratories. Those creatures were later featured in their own 4-part spin-off series, Bar Sinister, written by Mr. Grell and illustrated by Rick Hoberg. Now, IDW Publishing has collected Shaman’s Tears together in a single trade paperback for the first time, coming this December. We can only hope they decide to do the same with Bar Sinister later on.

Telion [a free fantasy furry novel]

Furry Reddit - Thu 20 Oct 2011 - 04:02

So a little while back I submitted to /r/furry an arbitrary idea which began with this blog post.

A few of you showed an interest and encouraged me to develop it more before starting work. I have several other projects on the go as a writer too, but this one I wanted to make freely available chapter by chapter for other furries to read and hopefully enjoy.

So to cut to the chase, I now present the very first instalment in a story that I hope you will all enjoy.

Comments are welcome.

Fursuit creation question

Furry Reddit - Wed 19 Oct 2011 - 23:30

I'm about to start making my first fursuit - I've been researching this for a while and I'm generally a crafty person. I've been sewing costumes and toys for years - I don't think the body will be an issue. What I'm worried about is the head. What is the hardest part of the creation in your opinion? Do you prefer fauxleather or polymer clay for a nose? Any tips? How did your first head come out? Fur isn't cheap and I have no money, so I'd like this to be as painless as possible. What is your experience with eyes? What's your favorite kind? The animal is a purple/white wolf/coyote. TL:DR Making a furhead. Tips, thoughts, and advice please! Thank you ever so much!!!<3

48 Animals Escape After Ohio Sanctuary Owner Found Dead

Furry News Network - Wed 19 Oct 2011 - 09:30

ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Dozens of schools and roads in Muskingum County, Ohio were closed today as authorities continue to patrol the streets in search of the remaining wild animals that escaped from their habitat on Tuesday.

Nearly 48 animals including: cheetahs, wolves, grizzly bears, lions, and others were reported to have escaped through their open cage doors. When asked by NBC’s TODAY Show why the animal cages were left open, Sheriff Matt Lutz said that Terry Thompson, owner and care-taker of Muskingum County Animal Farm, could have very well left them open.

Thompson himself was found dead at the wildlife reserve yesterday. Sheriff Lutz said that his death did not look suspicious but, “Anything is possible.” According to investigator’s reports to NBC’s John Yang, “the preliminary indications were that Thompson had committed suicide… He [Lutz] wouldn’t say how Thompson died but several aggressive animals were found around his body when deputies arrived and had to be shot… This is a bad situation. It’s been a situation for a long time.”

Of the 48 animals that escaped, about 30 of them have been shot and killed by local authorities. When deputies arrived at the animal farm, they immediately set about shooting many of the other animals that were standing outside of their cages.

The total number of beasts that have been captured and/or killed has, at this time, yet to be determined. “Once daybreak hits here, we’re going back in to get an accountability of how many animals have been put down, how many animals have been penned up,” the Sheriff told NBC.

Sheriff Lutz told TODAY that they were attempting to tranquilize the animals. However, he warned that the drug could take up to several minutes to take effect, “…especially with an animal that is moving around and very excited.”

White, the preserve’s neighbor, said Thompson had been in legal trouble, and police said he had gotten out of jail recently.

“He [Thompson] was in hot water because of the animals, because of permits, and (the animals) escaping all the time,” White said. A few weeks ago, she said, she had to avoid some camels which were grazing on the side of a freeway.

Local authorities are remaining vigilant to track down the remaining animals. This event adds on to the list of criticisms over Ohio’s extremely lax laws on exotic animals. The Humane Society of the United States urged Ohio on Wednesday to issue emergency restrictions on the sale and possession of wild animals.

The Wonderful, Wonderful Cat

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 19 Oct 2011 - 01:34

Comic historians differ as to who exactly created the iconic character Felix the Cat: Joe Sullivan or his employee, Otto Messmer. To further complicate things, after his world-wide fame as a star of animated shorts (and being the first cartoon character ever represented by a balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade), Felix appeared in a series of comic strip and comic book adventures in the 1940′s and 1950′s — some of which were drawn by Otto Messmer, and some by Joe Oriolo, but which were usually credited to Joe Sullivan. Got all that? It’s just one of the many facts presented in the introduction to Felix the Cat’s Greatest Comic Book Tails, in paperback now from IDW Publishing. After the opening essay by Craig Yoe and Don Oriolo (Joe’s son), be prepared for more than 200 of black & white and full-color comics. Righty-oh! More information is available at Amazon.
