A Guy, a Girl, and Their Monster is a new puppet-based on-line video short series created by Jenn Daugherty. Here’s the description: “Henry is a monster, of the under-the-bed variety. Down on his luck he searches out the little girl he belonged to in the ’80s. He finds her in Los Angeles living with her fiancé. They take him in and the trio learns to live together in the big city.” The project is put together by students from the University of Southern California (USC) Graduate Film Program. The first episode is up on YouTube, and there’s also a Facebook page for the series.

Dear Papa Bear,

I know I have written you before, but I have a new question that I'm sure you have heard before, so I know you can give me some good advice on it.

So, for some time I have been questioning my sexuality. I know I have had some attraction to men since I was around 12 or so. I was attracted to girls as well and have dated a few now and then. But as I have gotten older, I have found that while I am charmed by girls and enjoy their company, it's really men that I feel a real sexual attraction to. I pushed this aside for a while, thinking I may be bisexual or to really make my decision once I've had sex. But lately, I have come to the decision that yes, I am gay. I do find guys attractive and can't help but sneak a few looks when a good looking guy walks by. I accept that.

So, my question is where do I go from here? I'm not actually out. I live on my own and can support myself with help from my parents. My family does not seem to be the type to hold anything against me for being gay. The possible exception would be my father, who seems to act rather childish on the subject of homosexuality. Regardless, should I even let them know? Should I try to find gay friends? I'm just not sure what to do with this piece of personal realization.

I would like for this letter not to be published, if that is acceptable. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, TKTigerkat, big bear hugs to ya!

Sounds like you’re doing pretty well so far, accepting your sexual identity and being comfortable with that. Also seems like you have a pretty good family to come out to. Sure, your dad might be a bit “iffy” on the subject, but with the support of the rest of your family I predict he will come around eventually, even if he has some difficulty accepting it at first. While you are the best judge of how your family will react, my bear instincts tell me that you will probably be okay to come out to them.

It is also helpful that you are out on your own and can support yourself, so you are not in the prison that so many of my readers have of feeling controlled by their parents because they are still totally dependent on them for food, clothes, school, etc.

You don’t mention work, so that is up to you. Most companies are okay with having homosexual employees (especially since the law says you can’t discriminate against them) as long as you aren’t too flamboyant about it (that is, and it should go without saying, keep to the corporate culture on dress and social conduct and you’ll be fine).

Okay, so you are ready to come out. Wonderful! No better time than the present. But, now what? How do you meet men, etc.? Well, just like with straight people, there are bars and such where you can socialize, and there are gay dating sites, and so on. Problem is, if you don’t know what you’re doing you can really get in over your head. For example, Gay.com used to be a site where men met each other for dating with the goal of a long term relationship; more recently, it has become a place for hooking up for sex—it’s gotten rather raunchy, I understand.

Not all sites are like that. Not long ago, I found a group called California Men’s Gatherings (thecmg.info) that is truly about men socializing. They do everything from reading groups and hikes to movies and bowling and even retreats for exploring your spiritual side. I’m not sure where you live, Tigerkat, but if you’re in the L.A. area (they are based in L.A., and really should call themselves the SoCal Men’s Gatherings, but oh well), I would strongly recommend them. If not, you could do some research on the Internet and hopefully come up with a similar group.

While you are looking for gay men’s groups, you do have to be conscious of something I’ve run across both in Michigan and here in the Palm Springs area: the idiocy of gay men cliques. In Lansing, for instance, you were either on the “A” list or the “B” list. A list men were there primarily because they had money and dressed in Armani suits. The B list men were the guys who got looked down on because they didn’t make as much bread. I even knew a guy who was on the A list but got demoted because he “married beneath his status”—meaning a B lister. OMG, are you KIDDING ME? Drama, it’s everywhere. Here in Palm Springs I found a bear group and tried to fit in, but found they had already set up their clique and I was given a rather cool shoulder. Bears shouldn’t be like that. Such bullshit. So, I find my bears one at a time and make friends with them. I’m hoping to get some time in my schedule to do some CMG stuff soon and hope that goes well.

So, where do you go from here? First, take a deep breath and then exhale. Enjoy the fact that you are soon to be free to be yourself. Next, if you don’t actually know any gay men yet (although perhaps you do at work and such; if so, start with them) do some careful research on the Internet. It doesn’t take long to figure out which sites are intended for sex and which ones are for more genuine camaraderie. Fun and frolics abound as Hedgie plants his rump between Xavier and Felis to aid in the noise-making and fun that goes in to a typical episode of TigerTails Radio.  This week goes without a hitch, which is nice and really quite rare!  Unless, of course, you count us starting late due to Felis having broken his headphones and TK trying to rig up something to help him replace them.  Starring TK, Xavier, Hedgie, and Felis.  Backing music by Sanxion7.
