Mephit Fur Meet Needing Acts for the Masquerade! +Other info on the convention in Memphis, Tennessee!

Furry Reddit - Sun 21 Jul 2013 - 20:36

"The tiger cub bounced around the room, "we're going today.. we're going today..." His mom came into the room, "Calm down, and get in the van." The cub didn't really didn't calm down, and was into the van before the door even slammed shut. Dad started the vehicle and drove off. The cub would be bouncing around the van, if he wasn't buckled in, all excited. His mom said, "Are you going to be like this when we're there. If so, we are going to turn around and go home." That worked, the cub got very mellow. After a 10 minute drive, they parked in the lot and walked up to the gate. Dad paid for the three and they were through. Mom asked, "There's a new exhibit, should we start there?" She just finished the question when the cub lead the way to the primate house. Once inside the cub looked in the window into the exhibit. "Mommy? Why don't they have fur? Did they get shaved?"

"No, they are from a planet called Earth, they are known as Humans."

That's right it is time for the annual Masquarade at MFM. There are some changes in place for this years show. First off, the time has changed... let me repeat the time has changed to Saturday at 3. Now don't get worried that you might have to choose between that and the auction. The Auction is now on Sunday. Second, the practice is on Saturday from 9:30 until 2. Sometime during that time you need to come and reherse. If it's a video, we would REALLY like to have that early. I will be at Pizza Feed for people to come sign up. It's helpful to find out who's doing what early.

I hope everyone has some good acts worked up, and see you then." -BlueHeeler

The Moose of Might — or Vice Versa

In-Fur-Nation - Sun 21 Jul 2013 - 18:48

Back from San Diego Comic Con, and we have SO much to tell you about! First up is Moos Miht, a black & white independent comic book series written and illustrated by Joshua Warner (and published by Hanging Chad Entertainment). It follows the adventures of a young adult moose living in Detroit who discovers that he is the son of a famous superhero, Mighty Moose — and several international crime organizations are after his hide because of it! According to Mr. Warner it’s less of a “spandex adventure” than a “noir crime drama” with animal characters. Decide for yourself: Visit the preview page at Comic Book Trailers. Recently, the first five-issue story arc has been collected into a trade paperback graphic novel.

Being a Transgender Furry in Alabama Is Not as Big a Handicap as Being Uneducated

Ask Papabear - Sun 21 Jul 2013 - 12:35
Hi Paper Bear,

I ran across this site on accident and have been reading some of your letters for the past hour now ... and I thought maybe you could help me out some. My name is Ash, or Ashly. I'm a 22 year old trans girl, male to female. Problem is I'm running out of options. I live in Alabama in the United States, so first off, not good to be gay and transgender in this state. To make matters worse, however, I've been looking for work since I was 18 with no success. Not one single place has hired me despite me trying. I'm lucky that my friend is letting me live with them out of the kindness of his heart, but after years of mooching, and not finding a source of income, it's starting to hurt me in more ways than one.

Since I have no form of income I can't do anything that I want to do with my life. I can't move out, I can't drive, I can't buy my own necessities, I can't ever plan my trip to my dream vacation in Australia. But, worst of all, I can't even get onto hormones despite being permitted by a psychiatrist.

After years of this it is starting to make me hate my life more and more. Even thoughts of suicide have crossed my mind, which is strange for me, seeing as I don't ever want to do that. The thought of not living scares me and is selfish to others, my friends and mate. But I don't know how much longer I can keep this up. I can't start my life; how much longer must I wait before I can live happily?

What advice could you give me that could help me out? Sorry to ramble but I needed to get that out to someone.

P.S. One reason I have trouble finding work may be due to my lack of high school diploma or GED, and with being mentally handicapped it takes me longer to learn things than normally.

Ashly Miau

* * *

Hi, Ashly,

Indeed, you are in a troubling situation, but as long as you haven’t given up, there is hope. Let’s see if we can think this through, starting with education. You don’t specify what mental handicap you have, but it can’t be a severe one since you are able to write a coherent letter, meaning you can put your thoughts down on paper in a logical manner, something a more severely disabled person could not do. Perhaps you struggle with dyslexia or ADD, but whatever it is, if you can write a letter like this, you can get your GED. It might be a struggle, and you might need some tutoring, but you can do it.

In today’s difficult job market, with so many unemployed and many good jobs shipped overseas, not having at least a high school diploma is a serious disadvantage. I would not be so quick to imply that your lack of employment is due to localized prejudice against the transgendered so much as your lack of education. The longer you wait, too, the more difficult it will be to get work. Employers don’t like to see a resume with years of unemployment on it.

My advice to you, then, would be to get your GED as soon as possible. If you haven’t already done so, go to the GED Testing Service’s test taker page at http://www.gedtestingservice.com/testers/test-taker-home to sign up for online classes, get practice tests, and sign up for a test at a site near you. Before taking the test, take a practice test or two at sites such as www.4tests.com, www.gedonline.org, or www.passged.com.

In the meantime, you still have the quandary of making money. One thing you can do—and I have actually heard some success stories on this one—is to be an at-home customer service employee for such companies as Work At Home Agents (www.workathomeagent.com); LiveOps (www.liveops.com), which requires you to pay $30 to cover a background check, but it is a legitimate company, not a scam; Working Solutions (www.workingsol.com); ACD Direct (http://www.acddirect.com/jobs/); or VoiceLog (http://www.voicelog.com/careers.html).

Even though you are physically stuck in Alabama at the present time, the Internet is the Grand Liberator from Geographic Constraints. Take yours truly. I started work in publishing with companies in Michigan, and I had to live near their offices while I was an employee for brick-and-mortar publishers. Once I went freelance, though, all I needed was a laptop and an Internet connection, so I fled Michigan to live in California, even though my primary client is still in Michigan and another company I work for is based in Europe.

In our modern world, geography is not the limitation it once was.

While it won’t be easy to find work at home and study for and pass your GED, you can do so if you set these as your definite goals and work steadfastly toward them. You are very fortunate to have a good friend who is giving you lodging. Now show him you appreciate what he has done by doing something to improve your life. You are lucky to live in a time where it doesn’t matter where you live. The Internet is for more than playing games and chatting with friends; it liberates us from the physical world to do things that would otherwise be impossible or very difficult to do. You can take advantage of that to transcend your situation.

If you can see progress toward and income and education, you will gain self-esteem, relieving you of the burden of these negative thoughts you've been having. And that will start to snowball until you cannot help but improve your situation.

Good luck!

Papabear

Rodents in Space: Of Mice and Madness presents Tails from Out There

The midsummer heat seems to have made the two big engines of the crowdfunding world run slow, not a lot of furry projects on KS or IGG–though I’d be remiss if I didn’t at least mentionRoom Party,” a beer-and-pretzels card game about cons and party-crashers, but with the star-power of Blotch and Sofawolf Press behind it, it feels a little redundant! So a little quiet time this Sunday with a sweet little comic/graphic novel in the works, “Tails from Out There.”

And then a bunch of other stuff.

Highlights

MicelogoOf Mice and Madness: Tails from Out There!

We begin with a story of what might be the galaxy’s smallest bounty hunter, and his unlikely steed: the mouse Othello, and his trusty feline mount, Oliver, hopefully a little faster on his feet than, well, upstairs. The KS funds Of Mice and Madness‘s first major project, the five-issue comic adventure of this duo.

Mice2Othello falls squarely in the camp of “unlikely hero.” He’s dashing enough, for a mouse, about three inches of squeak in a cape, with a blaster at his hip that…well, I don’t know. Maybe they have really good batteries in the distant future. I can’t say Othello strikes terror, but that doesn’t seem to worry him that much. Looking at the art, I think the cat, Oliver, may well steal the show, his face is warm with a mix of warm loyalty and dim confusion.

mice1I like where the team’s heart is. They’re ready to tell stories about character growth, of making choices that might be good, might be bad, of mice with big dreams that may not be cut out for the top 10 list in their quarter of the galaxy. I’m a comic buff, and even in the edgier mass-market series, characters tend to be larger than life. The indie comic world is where ambiguous characters, folk who aren’t predestined to great things or tragic failure, go. By and large, we aren’t going to be headliners in this life, not for more than a shining moment, and that makes a mouse like Othello more human than the cast of Fables  or the latest super-mutant X-title spinoff.

If I was to criticize this project (and I don’t particularly want to, it’s so damned cute), it’s got a bit of an amateur edge, in several senses of the word (it literally means “one who loves”…). The video tells the story–artist has a passion for art, and like Tolkien blowing 500,000 words to give his Elven languages a place to live, the creative team really liked drawing mice, and started a comic series to build a mouse house. Is that bad? No, not a bit, it certainly worked for Tolkien! But there’s a youth to the Kickstarter–the video that focuses more on the creator’s story than the product; a price tag that seems  too high for a comic series, compared to similar product; the graphic novel version only available at $250 (yeah, yeah, “Kickstarter isn’t a shopping site,” but really, it is…) and you can smell the “new code” smell on the website. If they don’t make goal, I hope the mice come back with a new coat of paint, because these are good mice, and they deserve to see print. Good luck, guys!

Chimera Labs (Ends: 8/27/2013)
Lovingly–that’s the word–detailed adult toys by Kharnak
I would like to meet the fennec fox that had one of those. They don’t usually grow that big…

Amazon Rage: Curse of the She-Wolf (Ends: 9/6/2013): A Buffy-esque miniseries featuring a female werewolf, possibly from outer space. Mmm, mediocre CGI werewolves are so hot right now.
