Episode 26: Things That Should Never Be In HD...

Claws & Convo - Fri 2 Aug 2013 - 19:34
Heifer highway catastrophe, ferocious feral felines, and that one guy in fursuit who was probably the same guy that gave Will Wheaten nightmares... probably. Yeah something like that. All that, plus a thing with Kerbals and more on this episode of Claws & Convo with Dante and Striker.

Can You Give Your Fursona to Someone after You Die?

Ask Papabear - Fri 2 Aug 2013 - 11:32
Hello Papabear!

I've been following your advice column since I discovered it late last month. Having said that, I feel confident that you could tackle my micro-issue at your leisure.

My question to you: What happens to your fursona/fursonae when you die? I am considering passing them on to other responsible persons (or just one person) to enjoy, role play, fursuit, etc. so that they don't go to the grave/afterlife with me. Is my suggestion even feasible or practiced in the furry fandom?

Either way, thank you for spending your time on me. I'm kinda new to the fandom so I really appreciate your advice.

From Texas with love,
Skyote

* * *

Hi, Skyote, and Welcome to the Fandom,

What a fun question, and thanks for posing it. The answer depends on what your fursona means to you. For some furries, it is just a name they go by when they are hanging with their fellow furries; for others, it is much more personal. Grubbs Grizzly is my alter ego and very much a part of me and who I am. Therefore, when I die, that fursona goes with me in spirit. (Oh, sure, someone else could take up the name Grubbs Grizzly, but it won’t be the same.) However, I can’t pack up my fursuit and take it to the Other Side with me, so I am leaving that in my will (if it’s still wearable 100 years from now LOL).

If you wish to pass along your fursona(s) identity(ies) to a friend after you go like you might a used silver tea set you inherited, you can certainly do that, but I don’t know why anyone would take it. True furries like to have their own fursonas. Half the fun of being a furry is creating a unique personality that you can assume as your own. I, personally, would feel weird calling myself Skyote, for instance, because Skyote is not me, he’s you.

And I know some furries have multiple fursonas. Each probably expresses a different aspect of themselves, or they just like playing different roles. They might be more attached to one or two of those fursonas and a few others are just personalities they slip into once in a while. But, again, it’s the same thing as when someone just has one fursona.

Being a furry is not like being a Trekkie, where you might decide to dress up as Lieutenant Worf or Spock or a Borg to go to a Star Trek convention. This is one reason I enjoy being a furry so much! I’m not going to show up at Califur or some other con and run into myself because no one but me is Grubbs Grizzly.

To conclude, yes, it is “feasible” to give your fursona to someone after you die (which I hope is a very long way off for you), but I don’t know why you would do that. Let your friends come up with their own fursonas. Can you take your fursona with you? In spirit, sure! The physical accoutrements, like all physical things, will be left behind.

Live Long and Prosper,

Papabear

Sona Disconnect?

Furry Reddit - Fri 2 Aug 2013 - 10:48

/r/furry, I'm having a bit of an identity crisis.

When I designed my sona, Kami, it was so that I could have a direct representation of myself in the fandom. Moreso than a character, he's me in this little corner of the world.

This is where the problems come in. Even though Kami is my sona, my mate helped design him and was the first to draw him; in essence, she really gave the "breath of life" that characters like these need. Our characters had a relationship that paralleled our own and, to an extent, they even resemble one another a bit. We recently split up.

The issue, in short, is this: Kami really loves her, in a really devoted sense. He belongs to her. With her out of the picture, possibly for good, I'm having a really hard time stepping into his skin as it were. It doesn't fit and, sometimes, I feel like I'm pretending to be someone else as opposed to myself.

Has anyone here with a strong emotional attachment to a character had this problem before? If so, what did you do about it? I feel like I can't make another sona at this point because Kami fits too perfectly, but these inconsistencies between us make it too difficult to really mesh with him. This may sound absolutely ridiculous to a lot of you, but it's a great source of distress for me at the moment and I could use some good advice.

Is anyone doing requests?

Furry Reddit - Fri 2 Aug 2013 - 08:08

I don't have much money (I've been spending it on items for my furry cosplay) and I wanted to know if anyone might want to draw my Fursona in a different style for me please :D? It would be much appreciated and I could recommend you to my friends and maybe you could make some commissions from them ^ If anyone can, that would mean a lot. If not, then I understand (pics of my fursona will be coming up in a separate link post. (the pic on the right has the right details (such as hair color and and all, they are both different styles my friends drew for me)

Action Figures Like You’ve Never Seen

In-Fur-Nation - Fri 2 Aug 2013 - 02:01

Four Horsemen Studios is a group of radical toy designers who cut their teeth working for McFarlane Toys back in the 1990′s.  Now on their own, they have created several series of original, very different action figures — several of which are very very furry in nature. The Seventh Kingdom series (shown below) outlines a world of battling tribes of various species all vying for control of a conquering magick. Meanwhile Power Lords is a series of unique bird-based warrior action figures, some of which have available wing add-ons available as well.  Visit the Four Horsemen web site to see more of their designs and find out what they’re working on next.

Laika Believes Gets Funded

Gaming Furever - Furry Game News - Thu 1 Aug 2013 - 19:56

laikabelievesfunded

Earlier I had reported on "Laika Believes: The Sun at Night" an episodic 2D action game featuring Russia's first doggy astronaut in an alternate history. Earlier the folks at Minicore Studios behind the game were seeking to raise an additional $100,000 from Kickstarter to fund the project. Well some good news has come in as Minicore has received private funding according to an official statement from the fundraiser's official page. Minicore CEO John Warran gave the following statement.

"Not too long after our Kickstarter launched we reached a deal to privately fund major aspects of remaining development for Laika Believes. We didn't get those details finalized until last week, so we wanted to keep the Kickstarter up in case something different happened. This might leave you asking: "well why did you start a Kickstarter if you were trying to privately fund the game?"

A few quick notes. Aside from lots of design duties, my job is to make sure we can continue development of what we're working on. This means, essentially, always being open to different funding sources. At the time our Kickstarter campaign launched, Kickstarter was our best option. We're happy to be funded no matter what, but it was rather unexpected that we'd be able to privately fund what we were asking for. However, we're not at all regretful that we started out with this campaign, because because meeting and getting to talk to folks excited about Laika Believes is awesome."

Not long after this statement Minicore explains further plans for Laika Believes and has started another Kickstarter in the hopes of raising $20,000 more for the purposes of further enhancing the game's sound design and looking into localization for numerous territories given that the game has shown a good amount of appeal from players all over the world. If Minicore can raise enough cash they plan to include language options for Russian and Spanish with others to follow. There are also rumors that Minicore may attempt to bring Laika Believes to consoles given the recent developments with Xbox One and Microsoft's descision to self publish.

Currently Minicore plans to bring Laika Believes to the PC with no release date currently set. As always I'll keep my ears perked for more news and developments of this exciting looking game.
