He Needs More Than Fair-Weather Friends

Ask Papabear - Wed 12 Mar 2014 - 11:40
Dear Papa Bear,

A few months ago I experienced a personal tragedy. But that's not why I write you today; I'm receiving help for that elsewhere.

My issue is with friendships. After the event, I've found my friends drifting away. I'd hope they'd be there to support me, and some gave me some words of comfort the next few days after, but they soon became scarce. Either I'm the one who always has to initiate contact and keep the conversation going--they never contact me first--or they just stop responding to me, or in one case, said something hurtful and took my reaction as an excuse to end the friendship.

My problem is two-fold. I have no success at maintaining friendships, and little at fostering new ones. It's tough making new friends at my age, and I have little in common with most furries. I'm just tired of being lonely. I'm tired of investing in friendships just to see them dissolve. I've turned everywhere for advice, I hope you could provide some. Thanks.

Weary (age 34, Canada)

* * *

Dear Weary,

It's ironic that in the "Communication Age" we seem to be more isolated from one another than ever. Making friends can be tough, to be sure. Many people, in my experience, are shallow and not really friend material, which means my real friends are all the more precious to me.

In your life you will meet several types of people: acquaintances (don’t care one way or the other), hostiles (wicked people who will smile at you and think nothing of stabbing you in the back while telling you that you should be enjoying the pain), fair-weather friends (will hang with you when things are good, but not when their services are requested), and true friends (through thick and thin no matter what). Sounds like you had a lot of the fair-weather variety in your life. The loss you suffered was a litmus test and, sadly, they all failed.

So, how to find true, blue friends? Well, for one thing, it helps to shop around among people your own age who share your interests. You mention furries, noting that you have little in common with them (and most are likely younger than you). See, that doesn’t work well. Start by finding people your own age (if you want to hang with furries still, might I suggest you join the Greymuzzle group I created on Facebook?) Examine your personal interests, as well as your education level and occupation and try to locate people who share these things with you.

The other factor is that friendship is a two-way street. It’s not just about asking others to be interested in you, but you also need to be interested and involved in their lives. It does sound like you know that, though.

My suggestion, overall, is to reevaluate the people you hang out with, both in person and online, and see if you can’t find a group of people who are more suited to your personality, age, and experience. Once found, try to hang out with them in the real world, not online. Interact with them doing real-life activities, sharing experiences. The more you share your life in the real world, the more you will bond. Such bonding is virtually impossible to accomplish in the virtual world. Oh, sure, you can communicate online, but I continue to maintain that deep bonding, even on a friendly level, is very difficult to do through a keyboard.

I hope this helps some.

Hugs,

Papabear

Fursona wardrobe problems

Furry Reddit - Wed 12 Mar 2014 - 11:01

Hi, I'm having problems picking out which clothing my fursona should wear. I was wondering if there was a site that shows what different clothing pieces would look like together. I picked out some clothing items for my fursona, but I don't know if it would look good on him.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: if it helps, my signature hat is a brown radar cap

Edit: I made my fursona in a text post. http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=DrbEk84u the clothing I picked is near the bottom. Thanks for everyone's suggestions :D

He Enjoys the Smell of Skunk

Furry News Network - Wed 12 Mar 2014 - 07:56
Author: Papabear, For years now, I’ve wanted to get sprayed by a skunk. I’ve smelled the scent on the wind and the thought of getting skunked and taking a tomato juice bath arouses me. Still, I don’t want others around me to suffer from the smell. Should I try to get sprayed or even be […]

Need help with the tail on my hoodie?

Furry Reddit - Wed 12 Mar 2014 - 07:34

The other day I got an Otter hoodie: http://imgur.com/UvlecYV

If you look at the tail in that photo, you can see it kinda goes out horizontally and points up a bit... But mine seems to be really heavy and it goes down from where it starts (imagine you get the tail and push it down, it's like that). It kinda pulls on the back of my hoodie and it looks like I have a fat back :(. Anything I can do to fix the saggy tail? Thanks a bunch!

Furries This Fall on Cartoon Network

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 12 Mar 2014 - 01:58

Our friends over at Cartoon Brew have a new article up about Cartoon Network’s new series (that’s plural!) they have announced for their upcoming 2014/2015 fall season. And, notably, there are several new series in the group with more than a passing Furry interest. Featured in the article is the new series Over the Garden Wall. “Cartoon Network’s first event mini-series, an animated comedy/fantasy story about two brothers, Wirt and Greg, who are trapped in a mysterious world. In this ten-part mini-series, Wirt and Greg must travel across this strange land until they find their way home, aided by a wise old Woodsman who gives them directions and a bluebird named Beatrice.” Next up is We Bare Bears, “…a comedy about three bear siblings, named Grizzly, Panda and Ice Bear. Each episode follows their awkward attempts at assimilating into human society, whether they’re looking for food, trying to make human friends, or scheming to become internet famous.” In Numb Chucks, “Woodchuck brothers Dilweed and Fungus didn’t always see themselves as mystical Kung Fu saviors until they stumbled upon an infomercial featuring mega legend Woodchuck Morris’ mullet-fueled motivational kung-fu video”.  More familiar characters returning to TV include The Tom & Jerry Show (a new series of cartoon shorts from Warner Brothers), Be Cool Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny returning with “new friends” Bigfoot and Squeaks the squirrel in Wabbit, and Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Boom. Check out the article for more detailed information on each of these and others.

Commission Help

Furry Reddit - Wed 12 Mar 2014 - 00:02

So I've been coming up with a species of my own and I want to make a ref sheet of my character of that species. Now for the hard part, I need someone who can do basic animation (By basic animation I mean like twinkling stars and the occasional shooting star) as well as be ok with NSFW stuff. It would also help if you had skype. I will of course pay but price and method will have to be discussed (I don't have paypal so yeah).

Need Some Advice, just finished my first yarn tail

Furry Reddit - Tue 11 Mar 2014 - 22:38

I just finished my first yarn tail, and it feels great to wear, but I have no idea how to care for it. I have a couple questions.

  • Where do I put my tail when I sit down? Tuck it between my legs, put it off to the side, or what?
  • What happens if my tail gets wet?
  • How do I clean my tail of it were to pick up dirt from the ground?

And if you have any other pieces of advice for me with caring for my tail, it would be much appreciated. It's a red fox tail (w/ a white tip) that hangs halfway between my knees and the ground.

Here's a Picture
