You wake up one day as your sona...

Furry Reddit - Tue 5 May 2015 - 13:59

It's early in the morning, and you're the first one to wake up in your home. You think you might be dreaming or going crazy, but after some careful self inspection you realize you really have turned into your fursona. Frantically, you go online and check /r/furry with the hope you are not alone, but to your horror no one else has transformed.

What happens next?

Do you stay home? Do you hide? Do you confront the change head on? Do you feel happy, sad, shy, or embarrassed?

Is "Sona" an Overused Abbreviation by Social Cliques?

Ask Papabear - Tue 5 May 2015 - 11:26
Papabear,

Is the word "sona" being overused or loosely said?

Lets look at the Oxford Dictionary (The dictionary for cool people)

noun (plural personas or personae-ˈsōnē)
1 The aspect of someone’s character that is presented to or perceived by others: her public persona

Sona is an abbreviation for persona so why is it necessary to have multiple sonas to identify a type of thing your interested in? Is that sort of like a High School cliques that people in fandoms join because they are not in a high school clique.

Ex:

Pokesona tend to talk to other pokemon fans mostly
Wowsonas chill with the alliance or horde
Bronysonas gallop together

Yet they don't talk to each other because there is no similar interest excluding other fandoms from joining theirs. Has the word "sona" lost its meaning and is the NEW high school clique of fandoms?

Kim the "Pancham"

Hi, Kim,

I love the idea of the OED being “the dictionary for cool people.” That one made me grin. It sounds like you’re asking two different things: is the abbreviation “sona” overused, and are people forming too many cliques to avoid interacting with others who don’t share their interests?

Whether or not “sona” is overused is a matter of personal opinion. People have a way of latching on to words or phrases they think are cute, original, or cool and then using them to death until they become clichéd and boring. Many examples: aight, fershizzle, fail, amazeballs, hashtag, selfie, dude, ’sup, twerking etc. etc. Overuse of such words—and this might be insulting to some, sorry—is evidence of unoriginal and lazy thinking. I suppose the same thing may be said for “sona.”

As for cliques, yes, certainly young people gravitate toward them, and one reason some people associate with furries, bronies, and other groups is that they felt rejected in school and are now happy to be part of a community. It is often interesting to me that the very people who once complained of being excluded from a society become, themselves, exclusionary, rejecting people who want to join with lame accusations such as “you’re not a real furry.” Whatevah!

Cliques are a double-edged sword. On the one paw, they can give comfort to members of the clique by providing them with validation and a surrogate family; on the other, they can become elitist and hurtful to those who are outside their little community.

After decades of trying to belong somewhere, this bear has given up on the idea of being part of a group. Too much rejection, too much drama, don’t need it. Instead, I deal with people—furries and mundanes alike—on an individual basis and have found that formula to work much better.

In conclusion, “sona” has not lost its meaning, but it has become cliché, and, yes, there are many cliques out there, but they are nothing new, whether you add –sona to the end of the name or not. It’s just human nature to, like birds, flock together.

Cheers,

Papabear

Book of the Month: The Painted Cat by Austen Crowder

Furry Writers' Guild - Tue 5 May 2015 - 07:19

May’s Book of the Month, The Painted Cat, is by member Austen Crowder (author of Bait and Switch).

painted cat cover“Janet lives in two worlds.

In one world, she is Miss Perch, teacher at a small school deep in the corn grids, helping kids who are turning into cartoon find their way out of town.

In the other, she is Bunny Cat, and paints herself up to be the very same type of cartoon cat her small town has grown to hate.

The wall separating those two worlds is starting to break down. Between rekindling a relationship with an old college flame and discovering how much she loves being Bunny Cat her two worlds are starting to merge. Keeping up the appearances of two separate lives is bad enough, but when kids start getting sent away for turning toon she knows she can’t stand on the sideline any longer.

Two things are for sure: the two worlds won’t stay distinct for much longer, and Janet won’t come out unscathed.”

Parental rating PG.  Available from FurPlanet.

Anyone here going to Gateway Fur Meet in St. Louis this weekend?

Furry Reddit - Tue 5 May 2015 - 05:14

I'm planning on going with a couple of my friends, maybe for a day or two. It's going to be my first furry convention, and I'm totally looking forward to it, but I don't know anyone else who's going to be there. I'm looking forward to finally getting aquainted with the local group and meet some cool people. There seems like there's going to be a lot of cool stuff there, and I think it's awesome that it's taking place at the Lumiere casino. That was definitely a good choice of venue.

For those of you going, what are you looking forward to? How many other furry conventions have you been to? Are you a part of the local scene, or are you traveling?

FA needs to get their shit together.

Furry Reddit - Tue 5 May 2015 - 03:32

A trouble ticket should not take a year or more to get a response. The IRS works faster. Especially when TT systems are easy to sort out (I've worked doing TTs before).

Seriously. It is an almost impressive how BAD FA is at doing anything that needs to be done while simultaneously wasting time, effort, and money on a broken Beta.

This is bullshit.

That is all.

Hey guys, I want to get a Tf2 spray made but I have two small problems.

Furry Reddit - Tue 5 May 2015 - 02:41

Which if my 2 characters should I use? And who should I try to commission if I'm on a budget? (I.e. No one like Kabier or another high profile artist)

I have the dog with the fancy hat

And the Beeeer

I'm likely going to try to get a medic spray done, love me some medic. So if we assume the body type of each character could be altered to better match that of the medic, which do you think would look better?
