Doing free theme-based drawings!

Furry Reddit - Mon 13 Jul 2015 - 17:26

Hey everyone, I'm going to start doing Iron Artist commissions with themes but before I open those I want to have a few under my belt to see if I'm really cut out for this! Themes I've decided on are:

  • Toga Party
  • The Nifty 50's
  • Bows and Lace
  • Floral Fairy Tale
  • Tasteless & Trashy

I'm only doing a few of them so yours may not be chosen however, If you're interested in receiving one, please fill out this form:

  • Character reference: (images only please)
  • Character Name:
  • Character Species:
  • Personality of character : (3 sentences max)
  • Important Features/Notes : (gender? gender presentation? Things you character WOULD NEVER wear, things they like, etc.)
  • Theme:
  • Decide 1: Nudity, lingerie, or fully clothed?

And thanks everyone! My gallery can be found here, btw

It's come up enough times in the past few days - it sounds like we need a (slight) revision of the rules.

Furry Reddit - Mon 13 Jul 2015 - 15:56

First of all, this discussion (as far from fun as it is) needs to happen to hear everyone's opinions and get everyone on the same page, so don't be afraid to comment with whatever you feel about the rules or what I've said.

Secondly, I think the rules that are displayed when creating a post should be the same rules as what's displayed in the sidebar. Avoids any confusion and increases clarity and visibility. (No "I didn't see the rules" excuses long after a post.) I doubt there's any reason not to do this.

And now, the rules themselves:

Your own art is more than welcome.

No problems here, except for when it's obvious trolling, which usually gets downvoted and buried before long... so, moving on.

Individual images are also welcome.

I'd add that in some cases, posts should be an imgur album instead of five or more individual posts. Mostly when all the images are created by one artist or if there's a common theme between them.

If it is not your own art, it is encouraged that you add "by (artist name here)" in the title as well as link to their art site in the comments.

Keep this as it is. "Encouraged" sounds like the best word to use here. Not the worst thing in the world if the artist's name isn't in the title. I'd have the community enforce the "link the source" part if it's rehosted somewhere though - i.e.: if the poster hasn't linked a source, reverse image search it and do it yourself, as it helps everyone out.

Tag all NSFW posts after posting, or put NSFW in your title to tag it automatically. NSFW includes:

Here we go... (these are a combination of the rules displayed when writing a post and the sidebar rules)

Nudity (any visible genitals/nipples, including visible or clothing with obvious genital/nipple outlines). Disney/Barbie-like nudity does not need to be marked NSFW so long as it does not violate any other NSFW tag rules.

Okay, duh. The only thing here is male nipples. It's up in the air on whether they'd be considered NSFW or not. I'd lean towards not, but like I wrote at the start, totally up for debate. Also, there must be a better way of saying "Disney/Barbie-like nudity"?

Sexually suggestive poses, behaviour (humping, groping, etc.) or suggestive clothing (such as fetish gear)

I'd change "such as fetish gear" to say something along the lines of "including/especially anything considered to be specifically fetish gear". There's also a grey area of how much and what clothing is considered "suggestive" that should be discussed.

Any drug use(including smoking, drinking, pills, etc).

I'd argue that smoking tobacco would be an exception to this list. Yeah, it's not recommended that people do it, but if you were walking down the street in the middle of the day doing it, there wouldn't be a problem with it (compared to everything else on the list).

Any graphic violence or featuring blood/gore

I'd change this to "excessive/excessively graphic violence, blood or gore". It means we can get away with a bit of comedy, while anything that borders on squick should be given the NSFW tag.

Note: the mods may, at their discretion, mark something other than these categories as NSFW if the need arises.

The catch-all "word of mod" that gives them the final say, though I'd take out the "other than these categories" and just give them absolute control to step in and say "no, shush - this is what's happening..." and straighten things out.

Flair your post for easy searching. Just hit the "flair" link under your post. Thanks for contributing!

Last part of the pre-submission preamble. More of useful information than rule, but it's there anyway.

No personal attacks.

Okay... Disagreeing and discussing is good. PSAs and sharing information (including about shady commissions and art/identity theft) is good. Understanding others is good. Singling out any person and verbally attacking them is bad. This literally gets entire subreddits banned and is in the reddiquette (useful to read, tbh).

Pornography (the engagement of sexual behavior) belongs in /r/yiff.

This should be obvious. Non-sexual nudity or somewhat suggestive content is fine here as long as it is tagged NSFW. Anything beyond that has a subreddit with over five thousand more subscribers. The other example would be if you're specifically looking for critiques on something you've drawn that falls in this category - /r/furryartschool is more relevant than here or /r/yiff. It may not be very active place compared to the other two, but the average comment from there is going to be miles more valuable than most of the replies you get on /r/furry or /r/yiff.

We're not done yet. Are there any more rules or guidelines that you think should be considered?

Almost forgot the ones I had:

  • NO MORE VAGUE POST TITLES. It should be obvious what you're clicking on. (Thanks to Espurra for inadvertently reminding me.)
  • Keep comments in SFW posts SFW.

What else does the community want?:

  • Content tags on posts (especially useful as more detailed NSFW warnings)
  • More active moderation - final decisions on borderline NSFW posts or if a post is inappropriate

(Edit: There's a load of healthy discussion embedded in replies to deleted comments. Be sure you don't skip over those.)

Hi guys, basically the title. I'm at work so my responses may be erratic, but I'd like to get my mind off the junk I've been thinking about lately. I'd rather be distracted from talking to you awesome guys than be distracted from being overstressed.

So whats up?

Photos: Furries, And Their Fans, Frolic Downtown During Anthrocon

Furries In The Media - Mon 13 Jul 2015 - 13:07

Here is a brief article with a photogallery, on the website of 90.5 WESA:
http://wesa.fm/post/photos-furries-and-their-fans-frolic-downtown-during-anthrocon

The world’s largest convention for furries, those fascinated with anthropomorphics, returned to Pittsburgh over the weekend with thousands of attendees converging on Downtown.

Anthrocon includes workshops, acting seminars, costume-building, animation, writing, art, design, lectures and more. It has also traditionally included an annual fursuit parade, but this year marked the first time furries marched outdoors.

The convention began in 1997 with about 300 attendees before deciding on Pittsburgh in 2006. Organizers have returned every year.

Can He Change This Christian, Straight Man and Make Him His New Love?

Ask Papabear - Mon 13 Jul 2015 - 12:20
Dear Papa Bear,

I don't know if you remember me (I emailed you in the winter of 2012-2013 about relationship issues) but I talked to you about relationship issues before. I now have another issue that I can't seem to resolve on my own and I need your advice.

About 2 years ago, I met a guy on FurAffinity through his art. He liked my stories and we hit it off well. We're still good friends even to this day and we care about each other very well. We're also like business partners (as he calls us) because of our comic that we do and also because he's helping me with a book cover for a novel.

The only problem is... I like him as more than a friend but he sees us only as friends. He proclaims himself as straight, though he's done more than enough homosexual stuff with me to make me think it's more than that. He's a very Christian person and he thinks it might be a sin to be gay. He's become over the last few months very adamant about me becoming Christian as well because of his care and affection for me, but he insists he is straight.

I can't seem to get over myself no matter what I do and I find myself going through a gamut of real emotions with him whenever I am around him. I honestly think I love him more than I've loved anyone else since my last hard break up over 2 years ago. But honestly, if he doesn't like me like that, why can't I get over myself?

Can you help with some advice?

Anonymous (age 23)

* * *

Hi, Anonymous,

Sure, that’s what I do ;-) I notice in your letter two comments of interest: he wants you to become a Christian, and you want him to be gay. I see this a lot in letters about relationships. “I love him, but if only he would do this or be that for me.” Not good. If you can’t love and accept someone for who they are without trying to change them, then I don’t recommend pursuing that particular romantic relationship. A person is not an ill-fitting suit you can tailor to fit your needs. Once you start trying to change someone, you open the door to a Pandora’s box of arguments, resentment, and dissatisfaction.

Can people change? Of course. But you must let them do it of their own accord.

As for the question “Why can’t I get over myself?” My instinct here is that you are in love with the idea of being in love, and this fellow is the closest you’ve gotten to someone you feel you could love in the last two years. After a two-year dry spell, a lot of people would be like you: getting a bit desperate and willing to grasp at straws because of impatience.

You’re feeling enamored because the guy likes your stories (big ego boost and mood uplifter) and because he makes you feel good about yourself you feel love for him. Let me ask you this: could you love him if he continues to assert he is straight and Christian and he continues to want to convert you to Christianity and there was no hope of ever changing that?

Whatever your answer to that question is, there’s your answer about the possibility of being mates.

Blessed Be,

Papabear

The /r/furry community..

Furry Reddit - Mon 13 Jul 2015 - 11:54

I'm just going to get right to it and speak a bit of my mind. I feel that our accepting community here is beginning to fray at the seams (tensions between users, users feeling they are unable to speak their mind if they hold an unpopular opinion). For a little while now I have noticed a slight increase of what many would categorize as "nsfw" material. Now there are many individuals who are perfectly ok with this and it should be allowed, as long as it is tagged properly. If only it ended there. As we all know, this sub is self-moderated and thus, even with rules and guidelines set out, things may be tagged inappropriately or not at all when needed.

This brings in the second group of furries, who are here for the novel discussion of furry-related topics in a ~PG-13 atmosphere. I have taken notice of many of you expressing your discontent with said content being too common, untagged, etc. You should not be belittled because you do not enjoy something. But I would also advise not trying to make to big a deal about it if you are the one commenting on another's thread.

The furry fandom is truly an interesting thing. A crossroads of tame and mature interests, fans tending towards being young adults or teenagers. This inescapable fact is the source of the font of furry drama, meaning the debate will never really be resolved. However that doesn't mean we should not work towards a more perfect system to satisfy both camps.

Thank you for reading through my ramblings. Hopefully what I was trying to say gets across. I would love to hear what all your opinions are on this touchy subject. Please, if you find an opinion or idea you do not agree with, don't downvote it. It will be much more beneficial to respond in a respectful manner instead.
