The Hatred of Negativity

Furry Reddit - Tue 14 Jul 2015 - 12:28

I've noticed something recently, on /r/furry. You're not allowed to say anything negative. Ever. You can't oppose the content of someone's art, you can't critique pieces unless you're oozing a sort of praise riddled comment that only covers the basis of what's wrong with a piece, you can't say that you don't like certain fetishes, you can't even judge certain people based on their actions. If you do, and you put this into written form, you get covered in a wave of snarky, immature comments, and downvoted. Why aren't we allowing people to express non-hateful, yet negative opinions?

Needle, and Through The Eye Of A Needle, by Hal Clement – book reviews by Fred Patten.

Dogpatch Press - Tue 14 Jul 2015 - 10:44
Submitted by Fred Patten, Furry’s favorite historian and reviewer. Dear Patch; Here is my review of Needle and Through the Eye of a Needle by Hal Clement that I wrote for Cubist’s Anthro several years ago.  Maybe only one fan in a hundred will take the trouble to track these down, but they’ll probably be […]

[Vent] "Furries are generally kind, generous, and honest weirdos"

Furry Reddit - Tue 14 Jul 2015 - 09:24

That's what I hear about us, at least. But I haven't seen that at all.

I've been very active in the fandom since 2007. I love attending conventions, I love making and commissioning and wearing fursuits, I love drawing and commissioning art.

But in the past few years I've had numerous very well known and expensive artists give me art that is way worse than what I paid for and the examples they showed, and then tell me that I should be glad they bothered to do anything for me at all.

I tried bringing my money to smaller, unknown artists only to be given excuse after excuse as to why things were never shipped, why they were never completed, why hugely glaring errors were never fixed, and then get mocked on twitter.

I've given my money to people saying that they were raising money for a friend's medical or vet bills and would do art in exchange, only to see that money go to a fursuit and then get laughed at and told they were never going to do any art for anyone.

I've made fursuits and parts for friends who said they were thrilled, only to hear from various other people that they were shitting on the hours of work I spent on their free gifts because they wanted LED lights and fans and custom colored fur and extras.

I've had people befriend me for weeks, and then swear at me and threaten me when I don't make them free things.

I've had people want to wear my personal fursuits, and then "accidentally" damage them when I said no. I've had people continuously grope me and follow me while in fursuit, after I've said no and slapped hands away and tried to get away from them.

I've had people steal things from me in my room at conventions, and even from my own fucking home.

All the fun has been sucked out of making fursuits. I was doing commissions at one point, but now I've given up on ever making anything else. Same story with art. I no longer feel safe wearing my fursuit, which was once my escape. I'm afraid to go to conventions and even local furmeets.

I love hearing about all the good the fandom has done. I like the potential of all the good things.

But nothing I've experienced in the fandom has been good.

I wish I could find some of the good people always say is in the furry fandom.
