Hi, r/furry!

I’m a graduate student studying clinical mental health counseling at a large university in the US. For those who might not be aware, clinical counselors are licensed professionals who provide therapy and mental healthcare to individuals, couples, and families. In the state that I live (and will eventually be licensed) in, we have the same scope of practice as psychologists. I’m in the second year of a 2-year program, and am currently taking a course about multiculturalism in counseling. In the course we are learning about different cultural issues that might impact our work as counselors, and how to manage those issues in respectful, productive ways.

One of our assignments this semester has been to pick a culture that: a) We have some type of negative preconceptions about b) Constitutes a clear culture or values system c) Has been disenfranchised or oppressed and to immerse ourselves in that culture. I have chosen the Furry Fandom for this project because I want to learn more about what makes the Fandom unique and how a counselor who is not part of the community can best serve those individuals. So far I have attended a Furry convention and interviewed one person I was lucky enough to meet randomly on my campus. The assignment requires that I interview at least four more people, but of course I would love to hear from as many people as are comfortable to share :D

I understand some people may have reservations about participating in an interview with someone outside the Fandom due to the way some people have portrayed the Fandom and members of it in the media. I invite any and all questions about what this assignment is here as comments or in a PM. I would like to conduct the interviews over PM here on reddit or through email (if you feel comfortable with that) so that individuals may feel safe sharing their stories without judgment.

When this project concludes, I will write a paper and do a short 5 minute presentation for my class about what I have learned and how it will inform my practice as a counselor. The only benefits I will receive from this are 1) knowledge and understanding of a culture different from mine, 2) a grade on an assignment and 3) hopefully some new friends.

It could be anything. Big or small. A fantastic idea for a book, a cool piece of art, a small business, etc.

Example: I've always wanted to write this epic fantasy adventure I have planned out for one of my characters, but I just don't write as much as I used to. :/

So yeah post your refs or whatever. I can't promise how many I'll do or when they'll be done but go for it. They'll probably be sketches or headshots or something simple. I just wanna have some fun.

I lacking motivation to draw/trying to get better and I want to meet new people, so I'm doing free sketch requests today and maybe a little tomorrow. Feel free to post any refs you got below and I'll try to get a lot of you, depending on the amount of requests.

So, I've been thinking. I'm a gamer and I play a lot of games, old ones, new ones, triple A, indie, all sorts of stuff, and I've noticed that, even though there are definitely furry games out there, like Tail Concerto, Solatorobo, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Starfox, etc, there's still a lot of potential for new, unexplored territory.

What kinds of games would you guys like to see out there that don't already exist? Do you have any ideas worth exploring? Let's hear your creativity!

I realize this gets brought up a lot, but I'm a huge graphic novel fan (both furry and non furry) and I want to know what you fuzzbutts read.

Some furry stuff I've already read:

Blacksad (JUST READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY)

We3: Great yet depressing Grant Morrision book about feral animals being used as government weapons

Gear: Cats Vs Dogs with giant robots.

Beasts of Burden: feral dogs investigating supernatural occurrences.

Non-furry stuff I love includes:

Various Superman and Batman stories (Killing Joke is one of the best Joker stories, Red Son is my favourite Superman story, even though it is an elseworlds tale)

Assorted Alan Moore stories (League of extraordinary gentlemen, Watchmen)

The Mask (Yes, it was a comic, extremely violent)

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (Speaking of violent. This was created by Jhonen Vasquez, the Invader Zim guy)

Chew (Cops, superpowers and food, actually has a few small furry references)

Edit: Also Punk Rock Jesus (the title alone should be enough to be interesting)

And the Scott Pilgrim series

There are, of course way more because I have a bit of an addiction, but you all probably hate me for rambling.

I'd love to play your guy's levels! Please feel free to share them with us. My Miiverse is the same as here, and I'll try to poke around yours as well!

/r/Mariomaker is the subreddit for the game. There are plenty of user made levels out there to play, so even if you can make levels, just play those!
