If I used to hump and ejaculate on many of my stuffed animals as a young man, does that make me a furry lover?

Paying bills through design, drugs and drawing

Furries In The Media - Tue 23 Oct 2012 - 21:33
Here's an article in the online Western Front, the official newspaper of Western Washington University. Written by Ashley Hogrebe, dated October 23.

http://www.westernfrontonline.net/features/article_f71f71d4-1d51-11e2-a6bb-001a4bcf6878.html

It discusses "unconventional" ways some students have made money to make ends meet. One of those methods is... drawing porn on Fur Affinity...

Drawing porn

Mitchell Abston, a Western junior, sits down to his computer and logs on to a website he is almost too embarrassed to admit he is a part of.

“It’s a really stupid website,” Abston said.

He opens his ‘Notes’ page on the site and browses through the different artwork requests: a dragon devouring a little person, a man with female genitalia in a scandalous position and a scantily clad human with animal features. Smirking to himself at the absurdity of the requests, he opens up his Japanese design software and gets to work creating X-rated images for his clients.

“You really have to have no respect whatsoever to do this,” Abston said.

The website, Fur Affinity, is an online gallery for fans of anthropomorphic art, a fetish involving fictional human characters with animal-like features. People interested in it are often referred to as “furries.” The website hosts the largest “furry” community with more than 750,000 users, according to Fur Affinity’s Twitter. Users are encouraged to post their artwork on the site, and individuals can request artists to do commissions.

Abston is one of those artists.

He said he has casually drawn fan art for video games before, and started doing commissions when his friend got involved in the site and told him about the potential to earn extra cash.

Abston was skeptical that he could get business with his limited drawing abilities.

“Who in their right mind would pay me for my crappy drawings?” Abston said.

He took a chance and had his first commissioned piece posted on the website last summer. Within one week, his 15-slot request list was full and people were backlogging him for art.

“This is something specific to this fandom. You don’t see this in any other fetish,” Abston said. “People get so embroiled in this lifestyle and they need more and more images.”

Abston said he charges $10 for a line drawing and $20 for a full-color piece, which is cheap compared to other artists on the site. The most expensive piece he saw was $400.

While Abston doesn’t consider himself a part of the furry community, he finds the financial incentive keeps him coming back.

“I am not attracted to it whatsoever," Abston said. " I just do it for the money”

Sometimes people on the site request drawings an artist is uncomfortable with. Abston charges a 'Fetish Charge' if a request is out of his comfort zone. Most of the time the $10 increase in price makes the requester tame their inquiry.

Abston’s full course load keeps him busy late at night and he finds drawing porn is an easy way to make money that works with his schedule. Drawing is Abston’s only current form of income and he uses the extra cash for spending money. Instead of playing video games in his free time, he will sit down and work on a piece. Abston does an average of one to two pieces a week, each one takes an average of 3-5 hours. He started last summer, Abston has made more than $200.

While he thinks most people on the site are too peculiar for his taste, he enjoys stepping into strangers’ worlds.

“It’s like a window looking into people’s weirdest desires,” Abston said.

Opinion: Why the furry experience hits home so deeply

Furry News Network - Tue 23 Oct 2012 - 20:24

So why your fursona?

Furry Reddit - Tue 23 Oct 2012 - 20:01

There has to be some deep and spiritual meaning to why you're wolf. Or maybe you just think foxes are cute. Could it just be you but with fur?

From what I get from foxes in lore. My personality just fits with foxes. Loners. Small and fast. Loves to mess with people. Always keeps promises. And I'm also shy as hell but will fight back if I need to. Cornered beast? Still, I just think of fursonas as a symbol that represents you. Nothing beyond that. Still hot though.

F@#k it, I'll see you guys on FA.

Furry Reddit - Tue 23 Oct 2012 - 19:36

I never know if I actually like something until I get into it for 2 weeks or so. If I keep beating around the bush, I'll just become some kind of repressed closet furry. There's no point in trying to fight an interest with no real downsides, it's like having some kind of existential crisis about liking train-watching. If I like it, I'll stay. If I don't, who cares. See you around.

(Not So) New To The Fandom, Decided To Introduce Myself

Furry Reddit - Tue 23 Oct 2012 - 18:41

Posted a couple of things, Commented on some stuff, decided to post something yet again.

Welp, My name is Ryan, but I usually (try to) go by Dev. I was introduced to the fandom accidentally about two years back when I was browsing about YouTube. I came upon some nice speedpaints, and I was intrigued, but I paid them no mind. I went back to those same videos about 6-8 months ago, and actually looked up the fandom. I've been active within the fandom ever since.

The internet is a dangerous, yet wonderful place, and I have experienced both of those examples firsthand. I have made plenty of friends in the fandom, but, because I have Asperger Syndrome, I can easily put myself into harm's way without knowing it.

Finally, A couple of just general things about myself. I am 14 years of age, My Fursona is A Renamon (I know, a bit overused), and I have made friends, plenty of them, because of both reddit, and the fandom.

Thank you for letting me take up some of your time ~Dev

EDIT: I wrote this when I was half-asleep. I knew there was bound to be an error. My fursona is a Renamon/Skunk hybrid.

Hey guys, I'm a 15 year old furry and I would like to know where I could find other furries of my age

Furry Reddit - Tue 23 Oct 2012 - 16:44

Because you know, I don't think furries are that common under 18. Anyone know where I could find others.

*snatches keys back from Kyo* Bad fox! No lube! Anyway, it’s time for the posting of our first live show at Oklacon! Afraid there’s no music break for this one, as it’s hard to find time for a proper pause during a live show. Instead, we have an hour and fifteen minutes of solid content! Also, sorry for the lateness of the posting; as stated previously, neither Smokey nor Istanbul were available until late-ish on Monday, and the bunny is both con-cruddy and on fire at the moment!

Before we launch into our e-mails, we attack topics like Kyo’s word of the week, the absence of audio distractions for this week’s episode, Kyo barely making the podcast, and Spirit Day wherein anti-bullying sentiment is spread! Smokey discusses ‘cloppers’ and the need to respect someone’s wishes when they don’t wish to partake of a certain variety of content, Halfwit mentions the Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses concert attended by the entire podcast the previous week along with the cardboard city she helped to create, and Istanbul mentions his awesome Werewolf moment (dickery?) and the Furry Common Sense panel that would be given the following day!

Of course, then it’s time for our e-mails, and we certainly make a mountain out of the molehill of e-mails we got! D (number D!) gives us an update on how his job search is going and asks for some help with a successful interview, we have another listener with an inspirational story about how they dragged themselves out of an abusive home life and turned themselves into something they can be proud of, and the topic of cutting bad people out of your life comes up yet again! A third listener shares some advice pertaining to coping with life’s little iniquities and looks for help in dealing with a vicious (and false!) rumor being spread about him, and the issue of age and its decreasing relation to intellectual capacity comes up. Finally, we come to Kyo’s vagoozle sending us a correction about komodo dragons as mentioned in a previous episode…but that’s not all! We have the studio audience coming up and asking how to lose weight, prompting us to discuss fat burning vs. muscle development, and we even have the developer of FurrySociety.com come up and tell us about a new, up-and-coming website and its impending capabilities. Sounds pretty impressive to us!

Next week’s topic is all about fursuiting, or – given that we’re on the cusp of Halloween – costuming in general. Can you recommend a good producer of same? Got any advice that you wish someone had told you when you started? Need some guidelines on how to deal with them, whether as a wearer or an onlooker? Write on in and let us know, we want to hear from you! Rememeber, your e-mails make us go vroom!

Ladies of /r/furry, what has your experience in the fandom been like?

Furry Reddit - Tue 23 Oct 2012 - 14:45

Or, "a very casual discussion on gender imbalance in the fandom"

I live in an area that has a high queer/homosexual population, so sometimes I feel a little out of place amongst the guys. However, I've met amazing friends, including my boyfriend of one year through the fandom, so I regret nothing.

So ladies, has your experience in the community been a positive one? What stories can you share?

So Reddit! I may be in the market for a fursuit.

Furry Reddit - Tue 23 Oct 2012 - 13:56

I understand a good chunk of you guys are active fursuiters (as evidenced by so much fursuiter-friendly discussion and events discussed on Reddit!) and I just recently found out I'm going to be coming into some money in a matter of about 6 months.

Now, as such, I'll then be in the market for a fursuit. I've fursuited all of twice (the first while being "mildly" inebriated, the second giving me cyclopean vision with no choice but to leave my glasses off) and neither were really quite me (as in, they weren't sized for me or my species or anything!)

My requests are threefold:

1.) Someone that can assist me in getting my measurements and making a duct tape dummy if needed (I have long johns that need to be sacrificed to the furry gods anyway)

2.) A good price for a fursuit. I'm not going to go overboard (Moving jaw! Reflective material eyemarkings! EYES WITH LEDs IN THEM!!! :P) but I want a good modest, yet respectable representation of myself.

3.) Someone I can discuss fursuiting with, get tips, maybe learn a few things. How I've been doing it is I just jumped into the deep end and tried to flail my way around. Doesn't work.

Any help on any of those would be much appreciated.
