Fur-funding week in review: 6-22-13

Off-off-off Broadway with Fursona Non Grata and I Was Loved By A Rat.

This week a long-overdue callout for the “for the fandom” play, Fursona Non Grata, one of those comparatively rare projects that’s directly fandom-relevant: a play about bringing a significant other home to meet the pack. I Was Loved by a Rat is a little modern fairy tale about a lonely young woman and her house-rodent. Neither is coming to a theatre near you, but both are worth a look.

And then a bunch of other stuff.

Highlights

Fursona Non Grata

“A woman raised furry brings her fiance home to meet the family for the first time. Fur-larity ensues.”

Fursona Non Grata (FNG) is a two-act comedy about a young couple, a classic “meet the family” scenario, except that the family is, well, divergent. Mom and dad have a predator-prey thing happening, those mixed bobcat-zebra relationships never work out. The rest of the cast is variously genderqueer or alternative-species, leaving the young couple–Lisa and Dane–a little island of normality, until Lisa has to return to the pack to deal with a family crisis.

Skimming over the script (thank you, Reddit), the play is a banter-filled hour and a half of wacky, dense and rapid-fire, filled with family scraps, a challenging ex, and tons of one-liners and sly references, and a “why we are” monologue that’s actually pretty stirring. What’s hard to get in a reading is the “in the moment” of seeing the script as a play–Some of the characters and situations are cringe-inducing (not so different from real life in the fandom there) and it’s hard to imagine how they’d carry off on the stage.

However…however, the author is a real name in the world, the creator of American Dragon: Jake Long.  And the play is quirky, but ultimately loving. FNG is a satire of the fandom, but a warm one, and while we as a fandom may try for a veneer of normalcy when the media looks at us, we are at the end of the day fond of our running jokes and crazy shared hallucination, and if FNG is a bit of a cringe-fest (and maybe I’m a bit of a cringer), that’s because it has fun with the hallucinations.

I Was Loved By A Rat

20130612081640-IWasLovedbyaRat13-2041FringeNYC is a launchpad for strange and wonderful plays and musicals. And if you happen to be able to be in New York City in August, maybe you’ll be able to catch this one. I Was Loved By A Rat is a twisted little black comedy fairy-tale about Antonia, a lonely young woman alone in the big city, and the chivalrous rat, RG, living in her walls.

Over the course of the play we move from Antonia as exterminator to neighbor to friend, and then the strange and hazardous–and ultimately tragic–space between friendship and love. RG is aging and lonely himself, looking for humanity in his life.

Unfortunately it’s hard to find to find information on this play, it’s evolved over time. But for fans of talking-animal tales and bleak comedies, it looks like a winner–and very close to goal at this point.

The fox’s cuteness is making me just a little ill.

A costumed, musical Las Vegas family production, with lots of chances for kids to get up and move. Plot: Child lost in Africa, finds magic talisman that transforms the local animals into exercise-obsessed mentors.

World War Kaiju graphic novel (Ends: 8/12/2013)
What if the ultimate weapon that ended World War II didn’t usher in the atomic age, but the Kaiju (giant city-crushing monster) age? Excellent video, great retro propaganda visuals, and bizarre immersive stretch goal toys.

“I Was Loved by a Rat” (Ends: 7/29/2013)

This theater group has launched some amazing dark comedies, I’m curious to learn more about this one, not a lot of information though…

Fursona Non Grata (Ends: 7/30/2013)
A play written for the fandom by the creator of American Dragon: Jake Long. What happens when a young woman brings her fiancée home to meet her all-furry family?
“This will be awesome if you can make it to California” seems to be a running joke in the fandom.

The art on this one’s pretty high quality. Pony fans should definitely take a look!

Produce Play Money (Ends: 8/3/2013)

I don’t understand this one. It involves puppets, ghosts, and the afterlife.

A richly-illustrated card game focused on small decks, agency over luck, and a theme of narrative, authors, and writing.
This is a well-planned Kickstarter, with a hefty goal. Good luck!

Tech Stuff

Tanuki tails for USB devices (Ends: 7/3/2013)
With this flash drive in the shape of a faux-fur raccoon-dog tail, any USB compatible device instantly becomes a tanuki.
Where is the line between “effing BRILLIANT” and “incredibly stupid?” Is there any line at all?

Video Games

Pawtergeist (Ends: 7/1/2013)
Protect your house from a ghostly cat in this 360° gyroscopic shooter.

Goatlings: Virtual Goat Petsite (Ends: 7/7/2013)
It’s sort of “My Little Pony” meets “Neopets,” but with cute candy-sparkle goats and their human (or anthro) friends.
It’s sort of the “sparkledog” concept, but with goats. Diabetics probably shouldn’t play this game.

ElPetz (Ends: 7/10/2013)
Your basic Farmville/monster-breeder/combat mobile & tablet game, but with a weirdly cute set of monsters, particularly if you like your wolves perfectly spherical.
I’m not feeling a lot of originality here. But you get to hit your wolf with a hairbrush, so that’s something.

Fleish & Cherry in Crazy Hotel (Ends: 7/11/2013)
An isomorphic period adventure game and puzzler set in a 1930s wacky black and white cartoon. Lots of anthro characters and dancing furniture!
It’s a neat role-reversal to have the damsel save her boyfriend, but unfortunately for fox-lovers, you have to play the human :( Maybe there’ll be a fan-mod someday.

BEEF (Ends: 7/14/2013)
Now YOU play a sentient, walking mutant cow! Try to escape Meatjoy the Butcher and his abattoir of doom in this first-person survival horror/humor game.
…weirdly atmospheric.

Pooka Pets (Ends: 7/14/2013)
A cute sandbox/exploration interactive pet game featuring shape-shifting fairies. Very MLP.
Okay, maybe too many “pets” games this week. But bondage wolves and the African wild dog skin sold me on this.

Stray Cats (Ends: 7/17/2013)
Alley cats fight for food and territory in this quirky game for Android/IOS.
Not madly in love with the art or business model. Wasn’t sure if I wanted to include it, but the sketch art won me over.

Web

Batweasel: The Audacious Animated Web Series (Ends: 7/16/2013)
A loveable nerd falls victim to reality TV and becomes a terrible ass. Until he’s rescued by an evil genetically-mutated batweasel. You know, like you do.

Pocket Pussies: The Legend of Seven Purity Seals (Offbeatr voting period)
Zelda/Pokemon hybrid exploration/battling seizure monsters game, loaded with cheesecake pokemon, cat girls, and assorted anime-esque hotness.

…Meh.

Rat Realm: A Virtual Rat Sim (Ends: 7/16/2013): A virtual rat pet sim in development. I want to love this project but there is NO information available on it :(
“Willie the Wolf and the 3 Pig Brothers” (Ends: 8/9/2013): Children’s/YA illustrated book about bullies and coping. Points for an interesting wolf illustration or two.
Animato Anthropomorphica (Ends: 8/9/2013): A furry short film from the Bill Plimpton school of animation. I want to like this, but not a lot of love on the IGG itself :(. Try harder next time!
“Meet the Mascots!” Animation (Ends: 8/18/2013): Relaunch of the “Mascots” project, teen angst with anthro sports mascots. No change to business plan, which already failed once…

…Causes

Blue Wolf Sanctuary and Village (Ends: 7/6/2013): A sustainable community of simple houses with bed and breakfast, workshop space, etc, and a sanctuary for both wolves and humans.
Preservation of Dingo Records (Ends: 7/7/2013): Campaign to preserve archives of Berenice Walters, “The Dingo Lady,” a body of over 30 years of dingo research and preservation.
Save the African Wild Dog (Ends: 7/11/2013): Working to preserve the Wild Dog–veterinary costs, snare removal, tracking collars, research materials
Ma Pacu Meaw (Ends: 7/20/2013): Quirky live action/beatbox/stop-motion bird conservation awareness music video. Playful, fun stuff, particularly the intro video.
Sand Animals (Ends: 8/6/2013): An animated film series to teach the Armenian alphabet through animation, and teach students about animation. Simple, graceful, animated animals.

…Just For Fun

The Question Block Lamp (Ends: 7/18/2013): A glowing question mark block with a “daDING!” sound to light up your room :)
The Last Wolf of Ezo (Ends: 7/18/2013): Classic Samurai vengeance film, set in the Wild West. With a werewolf.
DUBWARS (Ends: 7/21/2013): “A dubstep-fuelled, top-down, twin-stick shooter.” Bringing wub-wubs and blasters to your mac, PC, or Android/iOS.
FurGlory: Luxury Hoodies and Laser Beams (Ends: 7/24/2013): Raver wear–fuzzy, UV-reactive hoodies that you can draw on (in a quick-fade, glow-in-the-dark sort of way). I want these to have fuzzy ears, and they don’t :(

…Coming soon?

Rusty Pup coming to Wii U, from Conker's Bad Fur Day Creator

Gaming Furever - Furry Game News - Sun 23 Jun 2013 - 01:10

rustypupnews

Chris Seavor, creator of Conker's Bad Fur Day, has been working with his new company "Gory Detail" for a while. They released their first title, Parashoot Stan, on iOS last year, and have just announced their next title. "The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup" will be coming to the Wii U and 3DS eShop "sometime in 2014." Both Chris and ex-Rare developer Shawn Pile talked to Nintendo Life about the new game, explaining exactly what kind of feel can be expected:

"It's all very much about the story," says Seavor. "It's a very sad tale. It's not dark as in 'mature' — it's not got swearing in it, or anything like that. It's quite a serious and adult story, but still a fun and hopefully playable game with lots going on. There will be moments of dark humour, but nothing gory."

The game will be a 2D platformer with hints of Lemmings thrown in, and the team seems to be focusing on making sure this isn't another 30-second fling like many other games of the time:

"The character is becoming the important thing," Seavor explains. "You're caring about this character. There are added elements which make it quite like a virtual pet game, a nurture game — you've got this character you want to keep alive. Rather than you're controlling him to get from A to B, you're controlling everything else to make sure that he doesn't die. Within that framework, you've got your traditional kind of gameplay — platforms that move, monsters that get out of the way, monsters which don't — but Rusty always has a relationship with you. You're the narrator. So in that way, it's like a God game — it's not strictly a God game, but it's got narration and this mysterious figure — which is you. I'm going to do some little twists and turns with the logic of the story, so there's a reason for the character to be there. It's not like Angry Birds or Jetpack Joyride — there's a reason this character is here. He just doesn't seem to know why."

We can't wait to see what they produce, and we'll keep you updated here on GF!

I love the furry community but feel embarrassed by being a furry

Furry Reddit - Sat 22 Jun 2013 - 14:14

It's something I've sort of always dealt with. I really love looking at the art, and the suits interest me, maybe not enough to actively fursuit, but all in all I want to be engaged in this community but this underlying sensation inside me tells me it's weird and I shouldn't like it. Sort of just a rant, but wanted to get it off my chest.~

Furry Is Attracted to Older Men

Ask Papabear - Sat 22 Jun 2013 - 13:40
Hi Papabear,

I discovered your site through FA's ads and decided to pose a question. Since I was little, I’ve always been attracted to older furry characters (Quetzal from Dragon Tales #1, Spike from Tom and Jerry being my #2.). My massive love for Quetzal actually is strong enough to make my current mate jealous. Recently, that strength has led me to become attracted to older men whether it is muscle guys or big burly dudes with some belly on them. Prior to this, I wasn't attracted to humans at all, and that made things very difficult when it came to seeking out a mate. I am very spiritual and have always known things that didn't have to be told to me. I have a sixth sense and knew the time was not right to come out about any of this to family. My family is very diverse but there is a sense of strong Christian views and when I came out to my mom last year, she made herself forget. It hasn't been brought up since and I don't plan to.

I am preparing to move out next year, right now I'm saving for a new Mustang and getting my financial life sorted out. I feel like I want to ask an older guy out, despite the fact that I'm with my mate and it is very difficult to tell him as I don't want to hurt him, I don't know if he is compatible with many others as he is autistic. However, I have felt a growing distance from him. What advice do you have that could help? Namely, I am attracted to guys 40+ now.

AquinGator

* * *

Dear AquinGator,

Oftentimes, an attraction for an older, wiser man in your life is the result of the loss of a father figure in your real life, either through death, divorce, or perhaps you have a father but he is very distant and the two of you don’t connect. The Quetzal character from Dragon Tales is an elderly character who knows a lot about history and is a teacher, a guide to the other characters. To me, that says you are not looking for a replacement for a mate so much as you are seeking a teacher and father in your life, perhaps someone who can help you learn more about that sixth sense of yours.

Another thing that is happening here is that you are very much getting ready for adulthood, getting your financial situation in a place where you can live the adult life, have a car, get a job, live on your own and so on. I’m only guessing, but it sounds like your autistic current mate might not be ready for that and you feel he is holding you back. You want a, shall we say, “real man” in your life who can be as mature—or even more mature—than you to share your new life with.

This is all quite logical to Papabear, and while your current mate may have been right for you at an earlier time in your life, he might not be now. If that is true, then you really are not doing him any favors by staying with him as a mate, though do not discount the possibility of remaining dear friends and still being there for him in that capacity.

Keeping this in mind, you should be somewhat cautious about partnering with an older man. You are 26 and if you find a mate who is 40 or more years old there is a very real generation gap that might make it hard to relate at times. That said, it is certainly not impossible for two people who love each other to have 10, 15, or more years difference in age. It depends a lot on you, your partner, and what you want. I’m just telling you this to make sure you are aware of the potential issues it might cause.

That was a bit of a rambling answer from Papabear, but I hope it makes sense and was helpful to you.

Good luck in your upcoming life adventures!

Papabear

Fantasy and Frameworks

Love ◦  Sex ◦  Fur - Sat 22 Jun 2013 - 13:00

Fantasy, notably sexual fantasy, plays a vital role for us as we grow into sexual people. There’s a lot to be said about Just how formative fantasies can be, as well. Even though one’s first sexual experience no doubt plays a large role in one’s life, the fantasies that lead up to that and the way they change afterward (and are refined throughout life, of course) figure prominently in making us who we are.

However, fantasies do not occur in a vacuum. After all, they certainly wouldn’t change all that much after a sexual encounter of any importance; the first being a notable example, but any particularly delightful (or particularly awful) encounter can change the way we fantasize. So it really isn’t any surprise, if our fantasies don’t exist in a vacuum, that if we structure our life around acertain set of ideas, a certain framework, that our fantasies will have something of that structure as well, and there’s really no better example of such a framework for a website devoted to talking about love and sex in the furry fandom than the furry fandom itself.

The idea of frameworks on which to hang aspects of our lives is hardly unique to fantasies, of course. Much of the mythical aspects of religion serve the same sort of purpose: if we can understand our world from creation up until now through some sort of tale or story, then we have some context, some grid in which to place our thoughts, ideas, and action. That story can be something that’s meant almost entirely as an analog, such as a ladder reaching up to heaven, one side of which angels ascend and the other side of which angels descend, or it can be something to be interpreted literally such as the Israelites’ travels in Exodus. Both of these offer us something: a lesson, an idea, a concept that people can use to build up a framework of reality.

The example may be a bit abstruse, but in almost all aspects of life, we rely on a framework in which to fit things so that we may more easily understand them. Another way to think of the concept is a grid, or, to follow the metaphor further, a pair of glasses with a grid painted on them. We seek to find the level to which to align that grid, so that the ground lines up with the horizontals and the trees align with the verticals. It’s a way of thinking about and interpreting the world around us.

So what is sexual fantasy and how exactly does it rely on a framework of interpretation? It might help to first break down sexual fantasies into a few rough categories, because I think that, by understanding those categories, it will be easier to figure out the way they apply to the topic at hand.

  1. Backward-Thinking Fantasy – these fantasies are about events that have happened in the past which have come to mean a lot to us. It could be that we experienced some wonderful time, with someone else or by ourselves, and it struck a chord. It need not have even been wonderful, it could’ve been awful and, instead, the fantasy takes a turn for the “what could I have done different”-ness. Either way, everything relies on something from the past.
  2. Forward-Thinking Fantasy – fantasies that look forward to some event in the future, whether or not it’s definite, are finding a way to project past events into what we suppose will happen to us some time down the line. Again, these can focus on either the positive or the negative; after all, revenge fantasies are hardly uncommon.
  3. What-If Fantasies – these are the most common – for me, at least – types of fantasies: taking our current situation and either recasting it into something sexualized (what if I were receiving oral sex right now), taking our current situation and replacing it with something else (what if I were receiving oral sex on a picnic somewhere right now), or replacing our current situation with something entirely different (what if I were some anthro fox person chilling in a bar and some random wolf…well, you know).

The first one is obvious in its connection with these sorts of reticles through which we view the world. The things we’ve done in the past actually took place; they’ve happened, they’ve already been interpreted, and we already can look at them through the lenses that we’ve constructed out of the frameworks we hold dear.

The second is similarly obvious. They are things we expect, want, or for some other reason need to happen. These are, of course, often not sexual – imagining the relief of graduation or what you’ll do with this year’s bonus are very potent (if not exactly orgasm-inducing) ways to think about the future. However, most anyone who has taken part in a long-distance relationship with a sexual aspect can assure you that these come fast and hard at times, and can even be a relatively exciting thing to share with one’s partner (phone sex or type-fucking is okay, talking about fantasies is pretty neat, but putting them together is a well-tested means of testing such things out in otherwise constrained circumstances).

The third one, though, is where we really should focus, as I hinted at before. Thinking of furry as a framework constructed specifically with fantasy in mind buys us quite a lot. We can take all of these things we think and dream about, sexual and otherwise, and apply this lens of anthropomorphic animals to it. Furry isn’t just anthropomorphic animals, it’s anthropomorphic animals told consistently and coherently. By that, I mean that these aren’t just animal-shaped monstrosities existing without history or future, but these are our characters that live and grow with us, or stories set in worlds with centuries of past behind them taking place over time. The framework is loose enough to accommodate Renaissance-era worlds such as Kyell Gold’s Volle at the same time as it accommodates Kevin Frane’s future-ish universe of Summerhill (you’ll have to read the book to see what ‘future-ish’ means).

In short, what furry buys us is an open invitation to fantasize within its bounds. Part of the reason that sex plays the role that it does within the fandom is the combination of the previous two belabored points: if sexual fantasy plays such a large role for us, and furry is made for fantasy, then the two fit together quite nicely. All of the art, all of the role-play, even the convention sex and fursuit sex all play into that, they’re all one sort of way or another of acting out fantasy within this aspect of our lives.

These aren’t just simple, one-off fantasies, either: they can serve the very real purpose of exploration of self. In my own case, I don’t really know how else I would’ve felt comfortable exploring my own gender identity without having some aspect of role-play involved.

There are various ways that various trans* have found or have been made to explore this, themselves The most obvious being the Real-Life Experience or RLE, where a trans* patient is required to live their life in their desired gender role, fulfilling a predetermined checklist of items, sometimes before their doctor will prescribe hormones, and almost always before a surgeon will perform SRS. There are good and valid reasons that this standard of care is advocated, but some criticisms have been levied against it for being a mechanism of gatekeeping.

For myself, the outlet of role-play within the fantasy world was my form of experience, though, of course, hardly RLE. The fact that I had something in my life already set up to accommodate a change in form so drastic as a change in perceived sex – after all, that’s relatively minor considering the whole “look, I’m an arctic fox!” thing – gave me a means of exploring in a relatively safe place without necessarily committing to something such as hormones or surgery. I spent a good deal of time between about 2006 and 2011 exploring the tie-ins between gender and sex as they pertained to me by exploiting this whole framework that I had to work with. I could, in other words, pass, even to the point of having sex (lots of that, actually, I was quite the hornball for awhile, but I digress).

That experience, the fantasy that I had the fortune to be able to live out in at least some sense was really one of the more formative aspects of my life. What started out as a “mere” sexual fantasy wound up being one of those delightful self-discovery type things, helping me to figure out the ways in which I best interact with gender. It wasn’t RLE, but it served many of the same purposes for me.

Fantasy serves a very important role to us for reasons such as this. We gain experience interacting with the world in a social manner by finding healthy ways to harness fantasy for our own purposes. It’s not that everything I did surrounding all of that was healthy, by any stretch (my grades in school and at least a few friendships and relationships suffered), but neither was it useless faffing about on the Internet. I know I’m not alone in this, either. Furry as a framework for fantasy has helped just about everyone I know within the fandom in one way or another, whether it’s helping them through a tough time, such as the way my social circle pulled together after a friend’s death, or the sexual release many find.

I should note that I don’t think this is necessarily a furry thing, of course. Similar frameworks exist in many different communities, even ones that permit and encourage sexuality. Several kink communities are notable examples of this. This is a very large part of our lives for many of us, though, and so it’s notable on a personal level. I am a very big fan of it, and think it’s something worth embracing, as is probably obvious, and I think that a fair number of folks out there feel the same way. There are unhealthy ways to go about such things, of course, but that does not preclude healthy ways, either; after all, the option to have something that’s safe, fun, and social is something to cherish.

Love ? Sex ? Fur

[adjective][species] - Sat 22 Jun 2013 - 13:00

Love ? Sex ? Fur is a new project by [adjective][species] to explore relationships, sexuality, and some of the finer points of personal interaction within the furry fandom. It is intended to be a safe space for authors to write about the ways in which these topics interact on social, cultural, and personal levels, helping us to leave no stone unturned in our explorations.

The intersection between our subculture, sexuality, and love is complex, and all the more interesting for that fact. A lot of what motivates us in life is the pursuit of happiness in all its varied forms, and the fact that we are so varied is what helps make all of this so interesting: things don’t always line up, or they line up beautifully, and the reasons for that are worth investigating.

Furry does not take place in a social vacuum, of course, but it does act as an attractor in a chaotic system: those of us who get close tend to stay close and find happiness within this system that is bound up in our happiness. We have a tendency to date within the fandom, to fall in love with other furries, and to enjoy our time together, always seeming to steer down the same path. It’s hardly a new phenomenon, either, but it’s still very pertinent.

These are the types of things that LSF will attempt to explore. The safe space bit of it helps to encourage authors to write what they want to write about with the understanding that that is what the site is all about. So, with that said, come and join us for exploration of the intersection of love, sex, and fur.
