How to Keep Your Creative Writing Project on Track

Ask Papabear - Wed 11 Dec 2013 - 11:59
Hello, Papabear,

My name is Cyrus and I want to write a furry comic.

It's a horror story about a cat, down on her luck, who recently lost her job. She moves into her childhood house in the countryside because she thinks she should get away from all the stress of the city. But as she stays in that house alone, her traumatic past comes back to haunt her and she finds herself being stalked by a monstrous figure.

I have the story and characters in my head, but when it comes to projects like this, I always have trouble sticking to it. I have attempted to write comics in the past, but I never finished any of them because I have trouble sticking to one project. How can I make myself stay on one project?

Thanks, Cyrus

Hi, Cyrus,

A lot of would-be writers have this problem, and many people have ideas for books and stories who never even get as far as you have. There are a couple of things you can do to help you keep on track to finish your creative project:

  1. Set aside at least one hour a day that you devote to your project. It should occur at the same time every day, so, if you are a morning person, set aside 8am to 9am; if you are more of an evening person, you might do 10pm to 11pm, or whatever time of day you are most awake and creative, but always do it at the same time.
  2. Set a daily writing goal. When I was writing my novel, I made myself write at least one page a day.
  3. If you get on a role, don’t stop just because you filled your allotted time or minimum page count—keep going!
  4. Always end your daily writing at a point where you know what your next step will be. Never end your writing at a dead end where you get stuck because you will have a helluva time getting started again the next day. One way to look at it would be to end your daily writing with a cliff hanger.
  5. Outline your book to help you know where you are going.
  6. Write the end of your book or comic first. If you know where and how the story ends, it will make it MUCH easier to write the rest of the book. This is a strategy I have always used to great effect.
  7. Find a local writers’ group with whom you can talk about your project and receive encouragement to continue and finish it.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

A new design.

Furry Reddit - Wed 11 Dec 2013 - 05:09

An artists rendering of me bringing you the new design.
In all seriousness, the current design sucks. I made this when I was just learning how to use CSS and now that I actually know how to do this better, I want to give you guys something better.

This is what I currently have. I'm a bit to lazy right now to finish some of the more glaring things like the missing buttons on the submit page. I'm redoing most of the code because I found a lot of redundant stuff in there and I'm trying to get rid of it.

Suggestions?

Things I've had on my mind for quite awhile.

Furry Reddit - Wed 11 Dec 2013 - 02:54

This may be pointless to some and also just innovative thinking to others but I really want to read a furry comic that doesn't include sex. I also would like there to be shows that hold a similarity to anime in some ways. I really love the furry art but I feel like it is not put out at its full potential. I would really love to do such things myself, however, I can not draw. But if people actually take this into consideration, I would be happy and thankful for any attempts. Thank you for reading.

Ok so maybe my internet is messed up or I don't have a clue what to search to find these comics. But the idea of an anime-type show/film would be great. And it could definitely bring out someone's artistic abilities.

Thank you everyone that has helped me find these things. There may have been others in a synonymous predicament and you just solved such a matter. I appreciate your time and posts!

I was talking about suiting with my boyfriend and something really interesting dawned on me.

Furry Reddit - Wed 11 Dec 2013 - 01:38

Last week, I was talking about my fursona/future fursuit with my boyfriend. I started saying that I would brush away little kids if they came up to me while I was out suiting. My bf very much disagreed which is something I found curious since he dislikes little kids as much as I do. Either way though, he said that making little kids happy is just one of the many amazing things about suiting.

Fast forward to today and for some reason I was reminded of that conversation. I dont remember what led to him saying it but when I reminded him he said "Its funny how polar opposite our fursonas are." He was definitely right but it made me think; are our fursonas really so different from how we are? Until this point I always saw other people's fursonas as something completely separate from who they were yet now I see that is totally false. Our fursonas are just perfect over-exaggerations of certain points of our own personalities and virtues.

Call Of Duty: Ghosts Wolf Skin DLC Is Coming

Gaming Furever - Furry Game News - Wed 11 Dec 2013 - 01:00
Ghosts Wolf Skin DLC Is Coming

Somehow I always seem to get stuck with the Call of Duty news, though that may be in part because I'm the only one on staff who even remotely enjoys it.

With that in mind I think Activision is actively trying to make me hate their game with with one of the most shameless cash-ins I've seen in quite some time. For a measly 4 US Dollars, you will soon be able to buy a piece of downloadable content that allows you to skin your dog in multiplayer to be a gray wolf. It doesn't skin Riley in singleplayer and said multiplayer dog is only unlocked as a companion when you get a killstreak. Theorectically it also only comes in one color/variant, so there's really nothing to it. That and it's still $4.

Even if you're an avid player of Call of Duty, bear in mind that 4 whole dollars can buy you a charity game bundle pack, an indie game or two, or a cup of coffee from Starbucks; all of which will likely be more appealing that a dog skin.

It should also really be noted that this is merely a rumor at this point, as Activision has not come out and said whether or not this is true. Who knows? Maybe it could be $5.

Furry Reddit - Wed 11 Dec 2013 - 00:18

Hiya guys and gals,

This might seem like an odd post, but I'm looking to meet some new furr-friendly people. I'm not a furry myself, but one of my best friends is, and I've been to plenty of anime conventions to become familiar with it.

I'm curious to how you got introduced to the whole idea, and what you do to stick with it. Anything from a philosophical standpoint, to a spiritual connection you might have. I just want to know more about the community and Maybe make some new friends.

I'm a college age guy from Ohio. I'll be at ohayocon in January, and colossalcon in June. Any questions are welcomed.

Werewolves in the Big City

In-Fur-Nation - Tue 10 Dec 2013 - 21:49

How did we miss this one? [Or did we? We lose track!] “Remember the werewolves of classic stories and films, those bloodthirsty monsters that transformed under the full moon, reminding us of the terrible nature that lives within all of us? Today’s werewolves are much more suave – and even sexy – and they’ve moved from British moors to New York City lofts, shaved, and got jobs. But as the tales of these writers will show you, they remain no less wild and passionate, and they still tug at the part of our being where a wild animal used to be. Running With the Pack includes stories from Carrie Vaughn, Laura Anne Gilman, and C.E. Murphy [and more...] and they will convince you that despite their gentrification, werewolves remain as fascinating and terrifying as ever.” Running With the Pack is edited by Ekaterina Sedia, and available in trade paperback. Check out the detailed review at Prime Books, the publisher.
