Furry News Network - Thu 17 Jul 2014 - 08:38

Zoo animals and their discontent

Fursday - Reading List - Thu 17 Jul 2014 - 06:09

Alex Halberstadt writing for the New York Times:

The notion that animals think and feel may be rampant among pet owners, but it makes all kinds of scientific types uncomfortable. “If you ask my colleagues whether animals have emotions and thoughts,” says Philip Low, a prominent computational neuroscientist, “many will drop their voices to a whisper or simply change the subject. They don’t want to touch it.” Jaak Panksepp, a professor at Washington State University, has studied the emotional responses of rats. “Once, not very long ago,” he said, “you couldn’t even talk about these things with colleagues.”That may be changing. A profusion of recent studies has shown animals to be far closer to us than we previously believed — it turns out that common shore crabs feel and remember pain, zebra finches experience REM sleep, fruit-fly brothers cooperate, dolphins and elephants recognize themselves in mirrors, chimpanzees assist one another without expecting favors in return and dogs really do feel elation in their owners’ presence. In the summer of 2012, an unprecedented document, masterminded by Low — “The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness in Human and Nonhuman Animals” — was signed by a group of leading animal researchers in the presence of Stephen Hawking. It asserted that mammals, birds and other creatures like octopuses possess consciousness and, in all likelihood, emotions and self-awareness.

The FIRST Foul-Mouthed Teddy?

In-Fur-Nation - Thu 17 Jul 2014 - 01:10

Word is spreading fast that the creators of the Ursa-Major-nominated film Ted are facing a lawsuit. “The creators of web series about a foul-mouthed teddy bear with a penchant for drinking, smoking and prostitutes have filed a copyright infringement suit against Seth MacFarlane, Universal Pictures and the producers of Ted, the 2012 film about a foul-mouthed teddy bear with a penchant for drinking, smoking and prostitutes. Bengal Mangle Productions claims that Ted ‘is an unlawful copy’ of its own animated teddy, who was featured in two different web series, Charlie The Abusive Teddy and Acting School Academy. The suit, filed today in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, states that those web series aired in 2009 and 2010 on You Tube, FunnyOrDie.com and other streaming websites.” Any merit to this? So far the targets of the lawsuit haven’t responded, but you can visit Charlie’s official web site and check things out for yourself.

Can anyone help me to where I can buy a tail and matching ears

Furry Reddit - Wed 16 Jul 2014 - 22:13

What I really want is a tiger tail like the anthrowear ones:

http://www.anthrowear.com/apps/webstore/products/show/3922129 Those are PERFECT and that is exactly what style I want, except I want one that is green, not orange. And I want matching ears to wear. Not sure how do ears attach? I have seen them on alice bands before but the band stands out, I don't like the idea of that.

I understand I probably have to have them custom made but I'm ok with that. I have no literally idea where to find someone who makes them. I would really prefer somebody who is in Australia because I have been ripped off really badly once buying furry stuff from the US and there was nothing I could do legally about it. If I absolutely have to get it from the US I suppose it's ok, but I would really like to be from somebody in Australia if possible.
