New to the fandom

Furry Reddit - Sun 14 Sep 2014 - 04:10

Hi fellow furs. I've been a fan of anthro art for a while now. The ninja turtles, sonic, street sharks, and beast wars were just a few of my favourite tv shows growing up.

I have one question. How do I tell my boyfriend?

Otherkin are Literally Killing the Furry Fandom

Furry Reddit - Sat 13 Sep 2014 - 22:54

I'm usually tolerant with otherkin, they don't bother me and I don't bother them. But there is a VERY fine line between being otherkin and believing yourself to be a special snowflake, who deserves special pronouns and titles.

You are human. You are not an animal trapped inside of a human's body, that's completely absurd. People don't need to refer to you, specifically, because you're "dragonkin" or "wolfkin". LGBT individuals don't demand special titles because they like the same sex; the very thought that a homosexual would want to be refereed to as "different" is completely asinine. Homosexuals are humans, just like otherkin whether they like it or not.

But let's get to the apex of this rant: I posted a thread over in /r/otherkin defending otherkin mysticism, in hopes that I could get some reasonable and rational responses. I've been interested in spirituality for quite some time and spend a lot of my Redditing hours on the occult subreddits, (most on /r/occult think otherkin are jokes and pseudo-spiritual furries v.2.0) and I thought that I might as well see if I could spark a friendly conversation with their inhabitants.

I was met with people trying to criticize my efforts, even though they had no idea what they were talking about.

So I tried talking to some on Tumblr to see if they were any different.

I was shown the exact same level of courtesy that I had been on the otherkin subreddits.

I didn't want to go on a rant about you all, but there's literally nothing else I can do. So here it goes, once and only once.

You're not special, you're not an animal stuck inside of a human's body and you're not "one" with the "kin" you've decided to attach yourself to. The wings, claws, tail and all the other astral imagery you've developed is nothing new and has been done since the oldest known cultures. However, you probably wouldn't have known about any of these meditative methods if it wasn't for mystics such as Israel Regardie, who popularized astral visualization as a method of spiritual and psychological healing, not for trying to become an animal. You're missing the whole point of the spiritual journey, and you'll continue to miss it if you keep stuff like this up.

Spiritual paths are meant to help you grow, become a better person and ultimately find your place in this universe. It's about finding and understanding yourself and showing others the very compassion that you so desire. There is so much good in the world that needs done, and YOU are capable of doing it just as much as anyone else. But you can't do any good if you're going to visualize yourself as a fox, a bear or some kind of obscure animal. All you're going to find out is you cannot physically be that animal, no matter how hard you try (at least as of now, with our limited scientific knowledge). Either way, you're stuck being human and that's really not all that bad! Humans can do a lot of good in the world, considering how short of time we've been here.

And hey, we're considered animals, too. Granted, we're still evolving so in a couple thousand years the humans of the future may still consider us, in the current, to be beasts.

So instead of trying to be something that you're not, try and be something that you are.

Does anyone else here kinda go through waves of furriness?

Furry Reddit - Sat 13 Sep 2014 - 21:37

I seem to be coming back into my feeling really furry and like "oh man I really want to start going to cons and having furry friends and get a fursuit and be a cute animal and run around and interact" phase of the curve. Seems to fluctuate over the course of the year.

Maybe it's the cooler weather and getting dark earlier triggering it now. Brings me down a bit and makes me want to be cuddly and fuzzy and carefree and be part of a community.

Hrf. Well...maybe I'll go to this con in October here in CT.
