2003 Ursa Major Awards final ballot

Your rating: None Average: 5 (2 votes)

Nominations for the 2003 Ursa Major Awards for the Best Anthropomorphic Literature and Art of that year have been tabulated, and the final ballot has been prepared. These are the five finalists in each category. (In case of a tie for fifth place, all tied nominees have been included resulting in six or seven finalists in some categories.)

Over 300 ballots are being mailed this week to those fans who submitted nominations with their mailing address to receive a final ballot, plus those members of Conifur Northwest and of C-ACE who requested a final ballot. Due to circumstances beyond our control, none of the address forms signed at Further Confusion 2004 to get a final ballot were received by the Awards Committee. If you requested a final ballot at FC 2004, please send your name & mailing address again to fredpatten@earthlink.net, or to Ursa Major Awards c/o Fred Patten, 11863 West Jefferson Boulevard, Culver City, CA 90230-6322. This goes for anyone else who wishes to vote for the 2003 Awards. Voting must be on the official ballot form, which we will mail to anyone whose request is received by 20 April. The postmark deadline for voting is 30 April. The Awards will be presented at C-ACE in Ottawa, Ontario on June 4-6.

Upcoming Furry Comics for June 2004

Your rating: None Average: 5 (1 vote)

Again, from Doodles: "Spring is here for most of us, but for the comics dealers, it's already Summer. This is the month that a lot of material will be coming out this June, in hopes of making it to this year's con season. Lots of specials, one-shots, new series, and marketing nightmares. Let's try some, shall we?"

"Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space" comes to American theaters

Your rating: None Average: 5 (1 vote)

The Japanese animated feature "Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space", featuring what has been described as a parody of Hello Kitty as a chain-smoking, foul-mouthed hooker in a "Star Wars" universe, is starting a general U.S. theatrical art-theater release. It has already been playing at art theaters in cities like Los Angeles and Cleveland for the past year, so who knows what the difference is? Here is a review from "LA Weekly" magazine:

Mozilla Firefox... now available in Plush

Your rating: None

The general consensus I (the submitter) get is that the name and logo for the Firefox browser does not by itself constitute being furry.

However, I do think that this is: according to this article, the Mozilla Foundation will now begin selling Firefox plushies. So just in case this is your sort of thing, now you know.

Criticism of Ursa Major Awards

No votes yet

Chistopher Bair, proprieter of the PlanetFur website has posted a criticism of the Ursa Major Awards:

"The 2003 Ursa Major Award nominees are out. And 2003 really shows off why these awards are never taken seriously. Nevermind that they're just a website promotion for the future awards (you really see any of the winners putting "Ursa Major Award Winning _blank_" on their publications?), but I'd be surprised if anyone really showed up to the award ceremonies.

Let's point out the big problems, shall we? I've already made a declaration for new categories to make these even remotely worthwhile for the Furry Fandom. The current UM awards present awards (last I checked, just a framed "WINNER" item, no statues, no plaques, nothing that anyone really would want to hang on a wall or put on a shelf) for Best Anthropomorphic Motion Picture, TV Series, Novel, Short Story, Other Literary Work, Comic Book, Comic Strip, Fanzine, Published Illustration and Game."

Amazon.com Promotes the Ursa Major Awards

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

Amazon.com has just created a "So you'd like to ... Support the Ursa Major Awards" page. It is clearly intended to help promote sales of the Furry books and DVDs that Amazon.com carries, but that is really no different from the s-f book publishers that blurb their books "Hugo Award winner" -- they are more interested in selling their books than in promoting the Awards. But it all helps. If Amazon.com's writeup leads people to the Ursa Major website, which has links to Furry fanzines and other nominees within Furry fandom, it will be much better PR for Furry fandom than another "Vanity Fair" article.

The Mongoose.net Anthroportal, an inactive but still often-used resource, will be vanishing this week. Robert "Chiaroscuro" Armstrong, owner and wembaster of the site, has sold the domain name to Verisoft, LLC for an undisclosed sum.

"Given my current financial position, the offer to purchase the domain was one I felt it prudent to accept.. I appreciate those who have enjoyed it through the years, and I'm sorry I have not been able to keep up with updating the content."

Mr. Armstrong further said that he has plans to create a new site on another domain - Furhoo.com - in the near future, with aims to replace and improve upon mongoose.net.
