The slow process of becoming a furry

Furry Reddit - Wed 30 Sep 2015 - 19:10

Now I know this is for mostly furry art and other stuff like that, but I just don't think I have anywhere else to post this. But I wanna tell you guys the slow process to becoming a furry, and it all starts when you're just 5 years old. Or somewhere around that, I don't know how you grew up.

When you're 5, you get exposed to movies like Robin Hood, mostly movies with anthropomorphic characters with vibrant colors on their costumes and cool personalities spark up your dong of joy. Mostly Disney stuff.

When you're 7, you're probably already into video games. You had the rad console like PlayStation 2 or Xbox(or something like that), and then you saw games with anthropomorphic characters like Sly Cooper or ratchet and Clank, or maybe StarFox. Now when I was a kiddo at that age, I'd obsess over Sly Cooper. I'd go all over the game looking for the bottles to the locks and other stuff like that. I had a knack for being obsessed with ANY video game with anthropomorphic characters, just name one on PlayStation 2 and I probably obsessed over it.

Age 9, around the time you think you could probably be a werewolf. And I've fallen for this trap so many damn times. I even repeated this chant when there was a full moon out. I'd look at it and say "By the light of the moon and our piercing howls, we are further transformed into cunning beasts. From the dawn of light to the evolution of man, I shall be reawakened, one with the land". I'd say it 10 times. But then again, my obsession boner popped up on that sorta thing but then I grew up.

Age 11, you probably have seen dank memes on Instagram or iFunny, and you wanted to check them and see what they are. then you saw a furry hate page somewhere. But then you ask yourself "what's a furry"? When you look up the term on Wikipedia, it says those people like all the stuff you like. And you're like "bam, I'm totes a furry". But then you scroll down and see that there's a sexual fetish involved in it too, then you change your mind quickly.

Now I know furries aren't a fetish(they can be, but that's not all what it is about). And also, this is how I think the slow process of becoming a furry is. I think other furries might know the term once they get to the "cool" part of the internet around let's say, high school days.

But anyway, if you have an opinion saying this is shit, then go somewhere else. I'm not saying I don't agree with your opinion, I'm just saying someone is gonna bitch at me about this. This is how I became a furry. But I'm an ex-furry now.

UT club encourages students to find ‘fursonas’

Furries In The Media - Wed 30 Sep 2015 - 17:05

Here is an article in The Daily Texas, the student newspaper of the University of Texas at Austin:

https://www.dailytexanonline.com/2015/09/30/ut-club-encourages-students-to-find-%E2%80%98fursonas%E2%80%99

The article describes the Longhorn Furs club, with input from Joe "EJ the Otter" Seifert, Grayson Northcutt, and Will Borah.

Physics senior Joe Seifert walks into the bathroom. One minute later, he emerges as EJ the otter, clad in a hoodie, pink scarf, brown fur tail and otter head.

Seifert is the founder of Longhorn Furs, a club for students interested in fictional animals with human characteristics, similar to the characters in Disney’s “Robin Hood.” Members of the club and the larger international furry community call themselves “furries” and express their interest through drawing, writing stories or dressing up in costumes.

“Expressing your furry side is not a very common thing in colleges in general because people are so nervous about how they are viewed by others,” Seifert said. “In high school, it’s really hard to go out and be who you really are, but we want people to know that, in college, it’s totally okay.”

Longhorn Furs is an extension of the Austin furry community. Seifert said he estimates Austin has 200 to 300 active participants, not including the larger online furry community that communicates via chat rooms and forums.

The club began with a group of students from the Austin furry community who ate pizza together every Monday afternoon. These gatherings, referred to as “furmeets,” date back to 2011, but it wasn’t until April 2015 that the meetups became a part of an official campus organization. Since its creation, Longhorn Furs has hosted two dances and continues to meet weekly for pizza.

Grayson Northcutt, human biology senior and club member, said he was drawn to the community because members are always willing to sit down and talk without judgment.

“People think we are weird just because we like animals, but that is only scratching the surface,” Northcutt said. “It’s way more than just that. We like the community and each other, and [the furry aspect] is just kind of the central point where we met.”

Seifert attended his first furmeet one year ago after stumbling across a furry subreddit. He said he had not yet come out, but the community’s openness and accepting nature allowed him to truly express himself and embrace his sexuality.

The national furry community is predominantly LGBT. According to a 2014 study by the International Anthropomorphic Research Project, only about 20 percent of the fandom identifies as heterosexual.

Seifert said transgender people, especially those who have not yet begun the process of transitioning, benefit greatly from the furry community. They can act as whatever gender they identify with through their “fursona,” an animal character furries create to express themselves in the community. Seifert said his fursona, EJ the otter, is an American river otter who, like Seifert, is gay and studies physics.

Mechanical engineering sophomore Will Borah, an officer of Longhorn Furs, said some people create fursonas that drastically stray from their personalities, while others create fursonas that are extensions of themselves. His fursona, on orange tabby cat, is the latter.

“Usually, people [with cat fursonas] are like cat people in real life,” Borah said. “[They’re] kind of quiet, grumpy in the morning and do their own thing. But I like doing the cat thing. It works out well.”

One of the misconceptions Seifert said he wants to disprove is the idea that furries believe they are truly animals.

“A lot of people think that furries are weirdos that don’t fit into regular society,” Seifert said. “People use furries as the butt of their jokes. People judge it right off the bat and don’t take any time to look at the people. We are just people who have this interest and want to be able to express it with others.”

Mother's Displaced Anger Is Aimed at Daughter

Ask Papabear - Wed 30 Sep 2015 - 11:38
My mom and I moved out of our house and into an apartment. I really don't mind it, but my mom hates it she also works from home for costumer support and she hates her job. We also live near my dad and brother, which my mom hates, and again I really don't care. The problem is that she is always taking out on me and I hate it! We are always yelling at each other for stupid petty things! How can I get her to stop yelling at me?

Tuski (age 14)

* * *

Dear Tuski,

What is happening here is what psychologists call “displaced anger.” This means that other things are bothering your mother, and even though they have nothing to do with you and you didn’t do anything wrong, her anger needs an outlet and, unfortunately, you are it. Here’s an article about that.

The thing is, your mother probably doesn’t realize she’s doing it. She gets irritated because of her job and things that are happening in her family, and she probably tries to hold it in, but then the least little thing will set her off.

What you need to do is show your mother that she is exhibiting displaced anger. Tell her that you understand she is going through stuff and she is unhappy, but that you are on her side, so please don’t take it out on the daughter who is routing for you, Mom! This will, hopefully, wake her up to what’s happening. (Oh, and don’t use the argument “I’m okay with where we live and being near Dad, so what’s wrong with it?” because that will just make her defensive and more irritated). If she does wake up to the problem, you should see her attacks on you diminish significantly.

But she’ll still need an outlet of some kind other than you. Start doing some activities with your mother that will help relax her. This will both help with stress and with the mother-daughter bond. If you can afford to, take an exercise, yoga, or tai chi class together. Try to take her mind off things by doing a fun activity together, even if that is shopping, or just going to the park, or a cheap matinee.

Tuski, your mom is going through a rough spot and she needs your support. I know this will be hard, but to end this cycle you need to stop fighting back for a while, even if she yells at you. Just don’t react. Let her yell for a bit, and, when she stops, ask her if she is done yelling (very calmly). Then explain to her what I told you about displaced aggression and how you are trying to help her.

This might take a while and some effort on your part. The less you yell at her and the more you behave supportively, the more likely she will back off of you and see you as an ally and not a punching bag (using a real punching bag, by the way, is a great way to destress).

Hope that helps! Let me know how it goes!

Hugs,
Papabear
