Patreon was hacked. Encrypted username, password, and tax info stolen and made public.

Furry Reddit - Fri 2 Oct 2015 - 11:49

Background: I'm an infrastructure architect and security specialist (hacker). I keep tabs on shit like this, and figured you want to know.

Patreon was hacked recently, allowing access to all of their account data. It was encrypted using a very strong method, however since they also got the source code, odds are that the hackers will find a programming error that will reduce the level of difficulty massively.

In short, assume that if you use patreon, your account info is compromised.

https://www.patreon.com/posts/important-notice-3457485

So what's this mean for you?

Well first off, if you don't have identity theft monitoring, you should probably contact Patreon and demand they comp you a few years worth of it like every other company that suffers a breach. They will.

Keep an eye on your credit report - you can get one for free every year from each of the credit reporting agencies via https://www.annualcreditreport.com/ - You can only get a free report once a year from each one, but you don't need to get each one at the same time - you could get one from each every 4 months if you wanted.

Finally, change your password. The biggest threat people don't understand is that by hacking one target, we get access to every account you've re-used your password on once we crack it. Used a gmail address to sign up? They'll try the password from patreon on your g-mail account and every single other site that uses an e-mail address as a login. They get access to your gmail account, they can reset the passwords on your bank and drain you like a thirsty fox.

So change your passwords folks, and stay safe. This was a bone headed mistake by Patreon and they need to be responsible for it - make sure you call them and complain until you get credit monitoring and identity theft protection on their dime.

Fred Patten Presents – his articles about Furry publishing, animation, and history.

Furry Writers' Guild - Fri 2 Oct 2015 - 09:24

furrywritersguild:

Dogpatch Press recently published an excellent post compiling FWG member Fred Patten’s book and film reviews as well as his articles on furry fandom history. As it’s relevant to furry writers and readers, I find it well worth reblogging here.

Originally posted on Dogpatch Press:

Discussion of the history of furry fandom with Fred Patten, at ConFURence 9.

Fred Patten is the most valued contributor at Dogpatch Press.  He came here during editor down time at Flayrah, seeking a stable place for his reviews and history articles.  (For those who aren’t acquainted with Fred’s impressive resume as a fan historian and curator, he has spent a lot of the recent decade in a convalescent hospital.  Writing is a major benefit to his life and a good cause to support.)

Without Fred’s guest posts, there would be no five day a week schedule here.  Assisting and formatting his articles takes a lot of work, and five days a week makes a very demanding pace.  But I think the promise of regular content should inspire anyone who contributes.  It makes this the most active “Furry News” source.  It’s all non-profit, so…
