Help an Anthro/Furry newbie make a great character generator

Furry Reddit - Sun 13 Dec 2015 - 14:20

Hey, folks! My name is Alexander Winn, and I run an iPhone/iPad app called Characterize. It's a random character generator app for writers and RPG game masters, with modules like "French Characters" or "Superheroes" or "Pirates" or "Dwarves", etc.

I recently added a feature where my users can request new generators, and one of the top requests has been for Anthro/Furry characters. It sounds like a great idea, but there's just one problem: I have essentially no experience with the fandom!

So I was hoping you folks could help me out? I have a few questions, and then I'm looking for suggestions for details my generator could provide. Any info would be appreciated!

1) Just so I'm sure about the terminology, are "anthro" and "furry" interchangeable terms for these kinds of characters? Is there any distinction between the two, either technically or in casual use?

2) How are anthros named? Do they traditionally have normal human names (e.g. "John Smith"), or partially human names (e.g. "Mickey Mouse"), or completely original names?

3) What kind of details might you want from a character generator like this? A few entries are obvious (species, fur color, eye color, etc) and a few are obvious for any type of character (age, height, etc), but are there any that I wouldn't necessarily think of? Things equivalent to "beard style" for Dwarven women, where someone outside the fandom wouldn't think to include it?

You can download or check out screenshots of Characterize here, to see an example of how the results work and what I'm hoping to build.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give! Hopefully we'll be able to construct a generator that makes the fandom proud!

A friend in need

Furry Reddit - Sun 13 Dec 2015 - 14:09

Today my best friend, and new fellow fur, badly hurt himself at an IST. It had always been his dream to join the military and serve our country, but if he failed the IST he would be kicked out and would not be able to fulfill his dream. At the IST, he failed slightly and in one of the drills, intended as punishment, he hurt his ankle by tearing some muscle in it. Long story short, even if you aren't a supporter of the military, I ask that you can keep this man in your thoughts and give him your best wishes. Thanks, from both of us.

I'll be drawing five of them, my own choosing. Just say what you want drawn (pm if it's more...mature).

Pop Culture furry of the week!

Furry Reddit - Sun 13 Dec 2015 - 06:49

So I'm going to try to start a new project. Basically, every Sunday, I'll post something about a specific anthro/furry character in pop culture. First of all, I'm going to start with Sci-fi since that genre has a lot of possibilities for this kind post.

Anyway, first of all, we have the Allasomorph. This creature is from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The episode it comes from is "The Dauphin"

So basically, the Allasomorph is a creature that can manipulate its molecular biology to become an anthro version of any species. It can become human or alien. It could also become a fox or a leopard if it wished to do so.

It's presence in the show was that the inhabitants of Daled IV and its moons, were actually Allasomporhs as the crew discovers. They were believed to have been rumors but that's been disproved of obviously. Other than that episode, the Allasomorph has had little impact on the Star Trek series, namely because its about exploring the universe.

Thank you for reading. Source

Learn Your Animation History

In-Fur-Nation - Sun 13 Dec 2015 - 02:58

All fans of classic animation history should learn about Walt Disney’s Silly Symphony series — if you don’t know about it already. Which means you should probably check out Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies: A Companion to the Classic Cartoon Series (whew!) by film historians J.B. Kaufman and Russell Merritt. Here’s what the publishers said on Amazon: “Launched by Walt Disney in 1929 as a ‘musical novelty’ series to complement his recent success with Mickey Mouse, the Silly Symphonies soon became much more. This line of delightfully innovative, animated cartoons ran for ten years and produced such classics as Three Little Pigs, The Tortoise and the Hare, Music Land, and The Old Mill. Silly Symphonies won every Academy Award. From the authors of the prize-winning Walt in Wonderland: The Silent Films of Walt Disney, this richly illustrated volume is a complete history of the Silly Symphonies including detailed entries for all the Symphonies along with a lengthy critical analysis and production history of the series.” Published previously in Europe, the book is available now in English.
