Hey r/furry, I am a 16 year old girl who just recently became interested in the furry community. I've never been to a furry event and I'm wondering a few things. I'm a little worried about my safety, I don't have any RL friends that would attend a meet with me. Is there any advice you could give that would help ensure my safety ? Also I noticed that this group is mainly 18 or older, I'm curious if anyone would be annoyed by the presence of someone who is under 18/would not want to talk with them. One more question, is it weird for someone to attend a con alone and walk around by them self? Would it be a lot less enjoyable to go alone? Thanks fellow furs

Zootopia marketing inspires visions of a feature length Orangina commercial. This short article shares a new image and says the movie is having “aggressive marketing”. And Reddit furries discuss hot tigers:

• “There’s no denying that they know who they’re marketing to.”
• “Big, beefy, sparkly tigers. They know what they’re doing with stuff like these, and nobody’s gonna tell me otherwise.”
• “And people still claim they’re not marketing to us. ha. ha. ha.”

Marketing meets Rule 34.  “How Esurance Lost Its Mascot to the Internet.” Not furry, but this will ring some bells.

Puzzle Cheetah in Subway ad (via Greenreaper.) Puzzle is a UK fursuiter. Put this on the list of mainstream marketing featuring furries.

Fursonas, a documentary About “Furries”, goes to the Slamdance Film Festival.  It’s prestigious to debut in a national film festival like this.  As far as I know, it’s the best exposure a Furry-made documentary has yet gotten.  Some observers have some criticism about a main focus on fursuiters (but doesn’t that fit visual media?) The film maker’s statements leads me to think it will aim above plain explanations we’ve all seen, to offer more interesting philosophy about identity.

Fursona has a great article in the maker’s local Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The production was boosted by winning a $10,000 grant from Pittsburgh’s Sprout Fund. It’s a competition that awards support to winning short film makers so they can develop longer work, to nurture deserving members of the community. This tells me that Anthrocon’s influence is continuing to spread. Here’s a clip from the doc that has Uncle Kage.

French convention “Fursuit Black Light” was visited by a French journalism blog. Here’s a translation.  The blog does a monthly deep investigation into internet subculture topics like 4Chan, Hentai, etc.  One of it’s journalists made this extensive report of visiting the French con as an outsider, with permission to write about it. It reports 66 attendees (a 4-fold growth since the first event in 2013) and mentions much activity on Anthrocity and FranceFurs.com.

“The popularity of furries benefits a young Quebec company”.  French translated news about Fur The Win Studios.

Kigurumi vs Furries – a lazy journalist poops out a sub-par article. It’s a fashion piece in Oregon’s Willamette Week. If a journalist is doing a bad job, they’re most likely quoting that 2001 attack article from Vanity Fair (which is more stale than a white poo on the sidewalk).  Subtitled “How to tell the difference between adults doing sex stuff with stuffed animals and kids mimicking Japanese culture.”

RIP David Bowie – a tribute from Neonbunny. Neon’s fursuit eyes are an awesome feature for a ‘sona (I always thought it was a reference to Alice in Wonderland.)  Here’s the story of Bowie’s unusual eyes.

RIP- popular adult FurAffinity artist Jasen Tamiia. Reddit has links to his art and an appeal for help with funeral costs. It was an accident at home and it’s sad to see someone die before their time.

RIP – Long time Bay Area Furry, Steelehart.  There was much appreciative rememberance from the community for his contributions. I received comments that he should be remembered for over 15 years of good support.  He leaves a partner who deserves support back in kind. There were medical bills and there’s a GoFundMe appeal for help with costs.

RIP – Brian Bedford, voice of Disney’s ‘Robin Hood’.  Flayrah has the story, and here’s a tribute from the director of Zootopia:

“Dawgtown” animated movie updates. Facebook has new short sample clips of traditional animation.  The indie movie is being directed by a single creator, a gutsy approach with only a special niche of models like Ralph Bakshi.  Check the Dawgtown tag for a creator interview and more.

Oculus Rift to ship with anthro game. Lucky’s Tail is a platformer with a “fun-loving fox”, a made-for-VR game to be included with the immersive VR viewer.

Abominably Adorable: Wisconsin woman walks her poodle while dressed as abominable snowman.

Google Doodle, 1-12-15: Puss In Boots (Tip: Fred.) The google “doodle” for Charles Perrault’s birthday featured Puss in Boots.  Perrault “laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale.”

“Don’t be scared! He doesn’t bite. That’d be gauche”

Scot Zellman’s Buster Wilde first appeared on-line around the mid-nineties back in the prehistoric days of the internet. Following the exploits of our eponymous hero, lover and maybe most importantly, gay lycanthrope as we quickly discover the he twist in the familiar folk tale and pop culture staple. Sinewy, flamboyant party animal by night at sunrise Buster switches back to his beleaguered alter ego, Bernard. Stressed, uptight and again most importantly, straight. As Buster humorously and enthusiastically throws himself into his new life, navigating the gay club scene with its drama and clichés, Bernard struggles with a double life he doesn’t remember and more often than not waking up in other guys beds. It was among one of the first web comics I discovered when I finally got on-line and I quickly made my way through every strip on the now broken and mostly forgotten geocities site.

You heard that right, Geocities. It’s been around fourteen years since the final strip was posted and it’s a testament to both the quality of the strips and Zellman’s considerable skills as a writer and gifted cartoonist that those who saw it at the time still hold it in such high regard over a decade later. Apart from one of two references that date them (Buffy, who Buster declares is a bitch because of her treatment of fellow werewolf Oz) the Buster Wilde strips have a timeless quick paced humour to them that’s still as funny today as when they were first conceived.

They continued sporadically for four years and fifty two strips until one day they just, stopped. One last strip with the energetic Buster switching the word ‘fetch’ with ‘felch’ and then, nothing. The site was never updated again and still remains, albeit a little bit more broken. If anything it reminds me how easy it was in the early days before social media and constantly online presences for people to simply disappear from the surface of the digital world. Details are still frustratingly few. Beyond a few mentions on forums here and there, the odd broken link, I feel confident in saying this post will be the most ever written about it. In the last few years web comics have really come into their own as something unique and separate from other comics, gaining a lot more attention and exposure in the process. It’s a real shame that in being an early example of the medium that it’s fallen through the cracks when it comes to wider recognition and it feels bizarre to be the first one writing about so many moons later.

My understanding from what I could gleam from a question here and there on twitter is that Zellman simply moved onto other projects, before eventually retiring from comics completely. It was a pleasant surprise a few years ago to find that a print version of the Buster strips existed, released by Furplanet who now helpfully host copies of the originals online. Alex Vance, writer of the Heathen Cities series and also a fan had reached out to Zellman with the offer to touch up the original artwork and release them on paper and ink “There was a new generation in the furry community and when I was still in publishing I reached out to him and developed scans of his originals into a book,” says Vance on giving Buster a second chance in the spotlight  “They represented a significant work. Drawn and lettered entirely by hand, a vanishing art”. The volume collects all of the original comics, promotional artwork, a fascinating artists sketchbook giving a glimpse into the creative process of the comic. Most tantalisingly it features two partly inked, mostly  unfinished strips both in a larger format with more experimental layouts. One of these featuring Busters strange toilet habits is now among my favourites and gives a fleeting glimpse of what could have been.

I joined the fandom over 10 years ago. I have or had a fursona. Used to participate on FA's boards. Yeah this subreddit has it's problems. We also have power users which are like online popufurs I think. Despite it's flaws there are some really awesome people. Overall the vibe is mostly welcoming and more accepting than most.

I figured this was just how the fandom is. Boy did I make the mistake of trying to meet furries IRL. Out of all the furs I've met up with I've had literally two good experiences. The rest was just awful. So awful I don't know I even want to be a furry anymore.

I still won't judge you all for the many bad furs. I do need to get this off my shoulders. I'm so disheartened after my latest awful experience with rude, crude, self entitled furries. Most of you guys seem awesome. So I don't get why the offline experience has been how it has been.

You know those stereotypes? Yeah. I didn't want to believe it either. I wasn't like that, my best friend since childhood who's a furry isn't like that. Pretty much every fur I've met since falls into more than one of them.

Most times when I meet a new fur they immediately want to show me porn. Or talk about sex or hard drugs. Including in front of children. Literally with kids right there. WTF. I don't really care if people like furry porn but dammit people there's a time and a place. Around children or in a public place where non furries can easily hear you isn't. The worst part is sometimes it will be things like Lion King or My Little Pony porn..please god no. No wonder outsiders think we are all perverts.

The cliques. The cliquishness of this fandom is worse than any other interest group I've been part of. To the point of being nasty to new comers because they aren't part of the clique already.

The social ineptness. Yeah yeah I get we're nerds and nerds are socially awkward. There's levels of social awkwardness then there's just being completely socially inept. I've already talked about the awkward sexual stuff and talking about getting wasted and some doing hardcore drugs casually in public. But there's also the furs I've met who go around making animal noises at random people in public not even while in costume. The furs who won't take no for an answer in regard to dating or sexy times.

The fact that the community puts up a face of being welcoming. These are some of the most unwelcoming people I have ever met. Ever. In all the furry groups I've been in new comers are pretty much shunned. They don't even get to know you unless you're internet famous or brown nose like crazy.

All the moochers. I know a someone who stopped doing art for furries and altogether later. Other furries would befriend them just to get free art or just message them randomly asking or somewhat demanding free art.

Met a few sexual predators and three ended up being sex offenders for harming children. Got sexually assaulted by some furry who put something in a drink they gave me.

First joined. Got told females don't belong in the fandom. "It's a gay male interest."

I wish I could say this all was only in my home town. I've experienced it in three different states and major cities too. All of it from interacting with furries IRL.
