Opening in Denmark in February 2011, Den kæmpestore bjørn: "Jonathan, 11, usually spends his vacations alone with his grandfather who lives on the edge of a vast forest populated by mythical animals. This year his kid sister Sophie joins him. But it's not cool to be stuck with a little sister, so he does what he can to avoid her. He succeeds entirely too well: Sophie is kidnapped by a giant, 1000-year-old bear. Fox shoots hunter in Belarus

Furry News Network - Tue 25 Jan 2011 - 12:00

Author: ringtailedfox

In an ironic twist of fate that seems straight out of fiction, a hunter in the Eastern European country of Belarus was reportedly shot with his own gun by a fox he was hunting.

The “fantastic” fox involved happened to pull the trigger of the hunter’s rifle at the right moment, when the hunter tried to finish it off with the butt of the rifle. The hunter is recovering in a hospital from a gunshot wound to the leg, while the fox, though previously injured in the ordeal, has retreated to the woods.

FA turns six; promises new layout, fixes in May

Furry News Network - Tue 25 Jan 2011 - 11:59

Author: GreenReaper

Fur Affinity turned six this weekend, offering a preview of a new site template to go live May 21, plus a commission system with integrated ratings.

Site owner Dragoneer has promised that underlying security issues will be fixed too:

Things have been slack in the coding department, and we know that. It’s time for a change, and we’re long overdue. We’re going to fix that. [...] The vulnerabilities will be fixed between now and then, and some of them require complete system re-writes

However, offers to help with these vulnerabilities have been rebuffed for now. It is also not the first time that a new layout has been promised.

Flayrah marks a decade of furry news

Furry News Network - Tue 25 Jan 2011 - 11:26

Author: GreenReaper

Ten years ago today, Aureth launched Flayrah.com, a service providing “news, commentary, reviews, interviews, and user interactivity.”

A lot has changed since then. Furry conventions have grown four-fold, both in size and number. A multitude of comics, artists and websites have come and gone. Many fans have left the community for good – and many more have joined us and made it their home.

But the need for a good source of furry news remains.

London daily paper covers surge in animal costumers

Furry News Network - Tue 25 Jan 2011 - 09:15

Dress up: taking fur to a whole new level

Author: GreenReaper

The London Evening Standard, a free daily newspaper, has run a piece on animal costumers.

Included in the coverage are kigurumi wearers and makers, local furs Lupus and Jackal, and professional animal costumer Alex Kovas – better known as “Humanimal“. Mentioned in passing is local convention RBW and the regular LondonFur meets.

Like the recent Halifax article, the newspaper contacted furs beforehand; Lupus admitted to using the opportunity to “[give] them what we wanted to give them.”

Further Confusion 2012 to be held in convention center

Furry News Network - Tue 25 Jan 2011 - 08:30

Author: GreenReaper

Further Confusion 2011 took place last weekend. Attendance was almost static at 2801, perhaps due to the continued weak state of the economy plus limited room; the Fairmont sold out by October. 477 participated in the fursuit parade, as verified by Flayrah in the dealers’ room.

$ 31,900 was raised by the sale of nearly 500 pieces, in an art auction consisting of almost 1000, while 113 dealers were present in the Den. The show suffered from poor lighting, but con leaders promised this would not be an issue in future years.

As for 2012, the big news is that FC intends to move to the San Jose Convention Center.

Elusive Cat Once Thought Extinct is Alive and OK in Borneo

furryne.ws - Mon 24 Jan 2011 - 18:53
"Almost everything scientists know about the Bornean bay cat is based on just 12 samples, the first of which was a skin collected in 1855 in Sarawak, Malaysia. In the several decades following this original discovery, seven other skins appeared. It wasn't until 1992 that a living specimen was obtained. Then, after another was captured in 1998, the species disappeared. It was widely thought to be extinct until a photograph was taken of a single cat in 2003. Now, the photographic record has expanded after three photographs, depicting two or three individuals, were captured by camera traps

Foxes make home on Charlottetown roof

furryne.ws - Mon 24 Jan 2011 - 18:53
"Two foxes have taken up residence in Charlottetown - on the roof of a home. The house in Lewis Point Park is now one of the most photographed spots in Charlottetown, as the foxes nap on the snow-covered roof. Tony Kelly said he snapped a series of pictures after his friend told him about the animals. "I didn't really know what he was talking about, so I come over, and he was at the door, and he told me to look over here on the roof," Kelly said. "I looked over, and here there was a couple of foxes curled up in the snowbank in the V of the roof." The foxes didn't seem to ca

American vs Japanese Animals

furryne.ws - Mon 24 Jan 2011 - 18:53
"Anime fans in both Japan and the barbarian nations have been pondering the rather pronounced differences in animal character design between the USA and Japan. Disturbingly, the American version could be recaptioned "furrie animals" without too much incongruity, although the same could probably be said of Japan's with respect to "moeblob animals.""
