Where are the best places to get good critique on fur art?

Furry Reddit - Tue 8 Feb 2011 - 05:16

I'm going to try my hand at some of this, and I'd like to know where the best place is to have stuff seen and critiqued... I wont plan on doing pornographic stuff, but it needs to be a bit more accepting/open than a straight up furry site. (babyfur). I know of furaffinity and deviantart... Any other ideas or suggestions?

Haters gon' hate

Furry Reddit - Tue 8 Feb 2011 - 03:46

this is a bit of a rant, but to be honest I need to get it out of my system. Look r/furry, we're a community right? good, so let's have a little talk. The furry fandom is something I love, and love being a part of. That being said, there are bound to be people who misunderstand or disagree with the way we choose to live! All I want to know is how do YOU deal with these people? personally, I just ignore them and go on living my happy ottery lifestyle ^.^ but again, let's be honest, some of you out there are perturbed by the fact that people are different from us. I want to hear your opinion too, don't get me wrong, but I believe we should all turn the other cheek and just ignore the trolls, haters, and general douchebags who make life for us pretty shitty. Let's all band together as a community and support one another! spread the furry love! also, post your fursona! I want to get to know you all better!

TL;DR Be nice to one another, stop the drama, post your fursona, and be part of our wonderful community! ^_^

Movie Review: Legend of the Guardians

Furry News Network - Mon 7 Feb 2011 - 23:33

This film follows the adventures of a young owl before he can fly as he and his brother are kidnapped.   The young owl escapes the kidnappers along with another young owl.  These two owls set out to find the Guardians of Ga’hoole in order to rescue the other young owls who have been kidnapped by the group.  The young owl eventually finds the Guardians after many trials and much sacrifice.  The film culminates in a climactic battle in which the kidnappers are vanquished thanks in no small part to the young owl whom the film centers upon.

I held great hopes for this movie, and they were somewhat dashed by some of the slowness early in the film.  It takes a while for all of the puzzle pieces to come together and put you on the edge of your seat.  All in all a good film but not great, the score is fantastic, and when the story really starts to come together you don’t want to stop watching.  The most difficult part of this film is getting through the slow and seemingly dis-jointed parts early in the film.  Had I written this review before or while it were in theaters I would have suggested to wait for it on DVD to rent and watch.  The story once it comes together is very enthralling and Hollywood needs more original material such as this to keep audiences coming back for more.

Is music under-appreciated in the fandom?

Furry Reddit - Mon 7 Feb 2011 - 14:16

Over the years, I've talked to several furry musicians and composers. Many of them have had a hard time finding recognition in the furry fandom because the most prominent forms of recognized creativity are art and stories. As one musician told me, "Music is limited to only a thumbnail, a title, and that's it."

There are a few musicians who are rather popular and buck the trend of not being recognized. On FA, Colson has 50,000 pageviews and has a very active set of catchy pop tunes. Fox Amoore, an administrator of FA -- who sometimes collaborates with Colson -- has more than 110,000 pageviews, and countless watches. Both Colson and Fox Amoore have high-production, quality material that leaves their fans and admirers begging for more.

How does one get from being a blip on the radar to being a household name in the furry fandom? What are your thoughts?

UPDATE (2/8/11 11:20 AM PST): A lot of great comments! Keep it up!

UPDATE (2/8/11 11:22 AM PST): I see a consensus forming: if you're going to be a musician and want to be recognized, go outside the fandom and promote yourself. If you want to limit yourself to a furry audience, you might as well make the effort to promote your music at conventions and furry-related social events or produce music that has furry undertones.

ZodiaCon debuts May; offers change from ?eSFuR

Furry News Network - Mon 7 Feb 2011 - 13:56

Author: GreenReaper

Emilka.jpgCzech furs (along with a few Germans, Poles and Slovaks) intend to celebrate “the dawn of time” at a new event: ZodiaCon, to be held 20–22 May at the Hotel Emilka near Tanvald in the Czech Republic.

The price, 1400 CZK (~58€, US$ 79) – rising to 1600 on March 1 – includes two nights’ accomodation and three meals a day. Sponsorship and dog permits are available. There are currently 65 attendees of a maximum 83.

The event provides an alternative to long-running local convention ?eSFuR, which is moving to a larger hotel with 145 beds. ZodiaCon’s staff hope to provide more flexible topic-based programming tracks. Fortunately, local furs can enjoy both, as ?eSFuR will be held in July.

And Speaking of Awards…

In-Fur-Nation - Mon 7 Feb 2011 - 02:57

Saturday the 5th of February it was time once again for the annual Annie Awards, presented by the International Animated Film Society (ASIFA) for the best in animation. This year, of course, was the year of controversy for the Annies, now that Disney/Pixar have pulled their sponsorship and official participation in the awards due to what they feel are flawed and lop-sided voting practices. Specifically, they’ve accused the Annies of being overly weighted toward Dreamworks Animation productions. Probably because there is a very large percentage of ASIFA that includes Dreamworks employees as members. Probably because at one point Dreamworks was offering to subsidize its employees’ membership in ASIFA, while Disney and Pixar were not. So, it probably didn’t sit well at all with Disney and Pixar that Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon swept the Annie Awards this year, much like Kung Fu Panda did a couple of years ago. In fact, this year, the Kung Fu Panda Holiday TV special also swept the Annie Awards in the television categories. Here’s a recap from Variety: “DreamWorks Animation ended up with 15 Annie Awards, 10 for How to Train Your Dragon and five for its television production Kung Fu Panda Holiday. In addition to best picture, Dragon picked up nods for helmers Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, animated effects, character animation, character design, music, production design, storyboarding, voice acting for Jay Baruchel [Hiccup], and writing. Kung Fu Panda Holiday was named the top TV production and racked up trophies for character animation, direction, production design, and voice acting for James Hong [Mr. Ping].” Other awards from the evening  (ones that Furry Fans might notice) included T.U.F.F. Puppy winning two awards for storyboards and character design (in a TV production). Ryan Page won the first ever Annie Award for “Character Animation in a Live Action Production” for his work on Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The evening also featured lifetime achievement awards (the Windsor McCay Award) for director Brad Bird (who joked in a video clip about his move from directing animation to live action), veteran animator Eric Goldberg, and creator Matt Groening (who joked live about the fact he’s spent 23 years in animation and only done two things: The Simpsons and Futurama). You can read more about the Annie Awards — and soon, see pictures from the show — on their web site.
