Georgia Furs – Post FWA Bowling & Dinner Meet
A Southern Tradition continues after Furry Weekend Atlanta closes for 2011. Georgia Furs is sponsoring their annual post-con Bowling Meet and Dinner for anyone who remains in Atlanta, Monday, March 21.
The event starts off at Ten Pin Alley bowling center located in Atlantic Station. Ten Pin Alley is a high end bowling alley and night club. The facilities are very well kept and service is listed as excellent. Ten Pin is not your average Saturday night out with the fursuiters bowling alley – they have a world class bar and restaurant located in the facility, but you’ll want to wait for dinner later with the rest of the group. Speaking of which, Fursuits are welcomed and there will be a changing area.
After bowling, the event will move to Mary Mac’s Tea Room for dinner. The 65 year old restaurant is a true Atlanta landmark and southern tradition that should not be missed. The menu features classic southern dishes including fried chicken, country fried steak, meat loaf and over 30 side items including mac & cheese and fried green tomatoes. Dinner always comes with your choice of breads including muffins, corn bread and light southern biscuits. It wouldn’t be complete without deserts including bread pudding, fruit cobblers and of course, banana pudding.
You can purchase a complete package including bowling and dinner for $52, which includes transportation cost between Ten Pin Alley and Mary Mac’s, or you can purchase just bowling for $25, or dinner for $25. All packages include tax and tip, and for bowling, it also includes shoe rental.
You can sign up for the event now at MyFWA.com – listed under the “FWA Events” button, or register at the convention through Sunday night at 7:00pm. Online Registration closes at 7:00 pm Sunday, March 20th. After then, you will be able to register at the venues, but the prices will go up $10, so please register early!
Bowling will start at 4:00 – you will want to arrive early if you need to change into your fursuit. Plan on being ready to leave the bowling alley no later than 6:30pm.
Dinner at Mary Mac’s will be at 7:00pm

These Guys Are Putting All Web Culture, from Furries to Lulz, In a Book
Posted by Don_Caldwell
on Monday, Mar 07, 2011
The three guys from MemeFactory, a live performance about web culture, want to write a book about the Internet, and they’ve made a Kickstarter page to make it happen.
As experts in Internet culture (one of them is currently pursuing a “Ph.D in lulz”) they decided they have way too much to say to fit everything into their live shows. To remedy this, they are compiling together a “Txt.book” filled with humor and insight into the wonderful world of image macros, remix videos and lemon parties.
Chock-full of the media we study, this text will contain ideas of use and interest to all corners of web culture: from b-tards to moral-fags, from redditors to SA goons, from “academics” to furries.
In case you’re still wondering what the book will actually be like, consider:
Will Goatse make an appearance in the book? Probably.
Will it also be a usable classroom text? Absolutely.
Has this ever happened before? Good god, we hope not.
They have also decided to use the Cory Doctorow model of distributing free digital Creative Commons licensed PDFs on the web, and will be selling print editions at their MemeFactory shows.
Having worked with these guys in the past, and after seeing several of their shows, I’m very excited to see what they come up with. Be sure to check out their latest show from Social Media Week São Paulo.

Maybe it’s about time Skip and I come clean about something-
You see, we’re- we’re robots. We were programmed by Alex Vance to run the book club arm of his furry publishing empire. And while we hope you won’t hold our lack of souls against us, it does explain the minor kink in our programming that causes us to identify so well with characters such as Unit JVCS3163- who you possibly know by his slave name- who skirt the line between real and unreal. Especially since that can be a rather potent source of some pretty steamy pulp. Which, as emotionless droids, Skip and I see as intriguing new territory.
If you haven’t had a chance to read the story yet, here are the text and the audiobook, including a free eBook copy you can take with you wherever you go.

Two-headed tortoise born in Slovakia
Author: Rakuen Growlithe
A two-headed, five-legged tortoise was born in Slovakia two weeks ago, and displayed in Žilina on March 7.
The left head is named Magda and the right, Lenka. They are conjoined twins of a sulcata tortoise native to the Sahara Desert. If the tortoise survives to adulthood it may reach a length of 1m and weigh up to 75kg.
Although all are scientifically known as chelonians there is often confusion about the terms tortoise, turtle and terrapin. Although there are regional differences, a generally accepted definition is that chelonians on the land are tortoises, those in the sea are turtles and the ones in ponds/lakes/rivers/swamps are terrapins.

Review: Verbinski’s ‘Rango’ puts the ugly back in ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’
Author: crossaffliction
When first shown the trailer to Nickelodeon Movies’ Rango, I was unimpressed. Though the inclusion of Johnny Depp would normally be interesting, I assumed he was just another slumming celebrity voice. And the character designs were a bit offputting. To put it mildly. But the revelation that the director for the movie was Gore Verbinski did pique my interest.
Rango is Verbinski’s eighth film; previous work includes such oddities as Mousehunt (which furry fans may be somewhat familiar with), the American remake of The Ring (one of Bravo’s “100 Scariest Movie Moments” selections), and the three released Pirates of the Caribbean movies — the third of which made him one of only four directors to gross over a billion dollars at the box office (putting him in the company of Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan and Ursa Major Award-winning James Cameron). In other words, Verbinski is a director to watch.
But does Rango live up to some of his previous works?

DAE have mixed feelings on wanting "furry" not to be bashed as a perversion but at the same time fearing it might become too popular?
Every time I see someone shouting "FURFAG" on the Internet I'm happy that such a person won't ever be interested in joining the furry fandom.
I'm also very worried that the "Furry fandom" could become a trend for more and more people just like anime is. I've met many many people who were anime fanatics and ended up growing out of it, yet I still have to meet more than 3 furs who'd really stop being furry and never come back or look back.
I've been travelling the world and met many wonderful furs (and other not so wonderful). I am worried that if Furry becomes a trend that the incomming masses could change the quality of the fandom we're enjoying right now.
On the other paw I identify myself as a fur and I'll obviously try to defend my identity and myself and thus I don't want it to be seen as a perversion or something disgusting.
I can't really decide what I want and what would be best. If you ask me right now I would answer "Keep it hidden enough to allow a decent influx of people that are really interested.
What are your opinions?

Guardian of the Keystone Quadrant
Rocket Raccoon has been a busy little mammal. He became known as one of the deadliest weapons experts in the galaxy in Marvel Comics’ Annihilation series, after saving the universe as one of the Guardians of the Galaxy. But before all that, he was the sworn guardian of the Keystone Quadrant in the original Rocket Raccoon mini-series — written by Bill Mantlo, with art by Marvel greats Keith Giffen, Mike Mignola, and Sal Buscema. Now Marvel has collected all four issues as well as the original appearance of Rocket Raccoon in the page of Incredible Hulk #271 (along with the follow-up from Marvel Previews #7) in one hardcover book. It’s 144 pages of full color, coming your way this August.

Kittens and Existential Angst
“One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that he had been changed into an adorable kitten.” If that sounds vaguely familiar, it should: It’s roughly the beginning of Franz Kafka’s best-known work, The Metamorphosis. Only this time around, it’s not giant bugs that take center stage, it’s giant kittens: The Meowmorphosis is a brand-new spoof novel coming soon from the pseudonym known as Coleridge Cook. Here’s the publisher’s notes from Amazon.com: “Meet Gregor Samsa, a humble young man who works as a fabric salesman to support his parents and sister. His life goes strangely awry when he wakes up late for work and discovers that, inexplicably, he is now a man-sized baby kitten. His family freaks out: Yes, their son is OMG so cute, but what good is cute when there are bills to pay? And how can Gregor be so selfish as to devote all his attention to a scrap of ribbon? As his new feline identity threatens to eat away at his personality, Gregor desperately tries to survive this bizarre, bewhiskered ordeal by accomplishing the one thing he never could as a man: He must flee his parents’ house.” The Meowmorphosis comes to bookshelves this May, in paperback from Quirk Books.
