Ai Weiwei Unleashes Animals Of The Zodiac On Central Park For His First Public Art Project

furryne.ws - Tue 15 Mar 2011 - 12:57
One of China's most visible and outspoken contemporary artists, Ai Weiwei has had a fraught relationship with Chinese authorities, who placed him under house arrest last fall and demolished his studio. Last month, a Chinese online poll for "artist of the year" was scrapped by Sina.com when it became apparent that Ai was going to win by a landslide. Yet his international reputation has only grown stronger, especially after his extraordinary -- if dusty -- porcelain sunflower seeds filled the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall last fall.

Seminole Area Furry Arrested for Plotting Columbine Style Massacre

Furry News Network - Tue 15 Mar 2011 - 07:59

Nathaniel Zeno, a 16 year old attending Seminole High School in Florida, has been arrested and charged with plotting a massacre at his school.

Pinellas deputies had Zeno committed to a mental hospital on March 4th. Florida’s Baker act allows for an individual to be involuntarily hospitalized if it is deemed they are a threat to themselves or to others. This occoured a few weeks after Zeno had taken out a book on the Columbine massacre from his school library, and had later been seen wandering the school with a map, making notes and marking locations.

He was released Wednesday, March 9th, and was arrested and charged with solicitation to commit murder, He is currently being held at the Pinellas Juvenile Assesment Center.

Family and friends had no idea he was in trouble until his arrest when his mother, Amber Zeno, called them to tell them. His family indicated he had emotional problems starting at a young age.

Zeno had been public about being a furry. He was also open about his views on animal rights. Detectives say the teen suspect was studying the book on the Columbine massacre and was in the process of obtaining a list of preferred firearms, and he told the student he was trying to get help from that he was targeting people that had a history of being cruel to animals.

His mother enrolled him at Seminole, but acceptance came hard. And Zeno, a loner, was hard to get to know. He would wear all-black clothing and had a problem with personal hygiene. As for being a furry, he was especially interested in cats and had a fox costume he wore to the Renaissance Festival. His mother noted he had a rich fantasy life.

“I think he felt very rejected and isolated (at Seminole),” his grandmother, Claudia McGrath said. “He wasn’t into drugs. He wasn’t violent. … He was messy. He was on the gloomy side.”

His entries on the deviantart.com website show Zeno’s level of distress over the past months: He uploaded two pictures of himself. Under one, he wrote, “I know I’m ugly.” Under the other, “I’m hideous.” He listed his personal quote in German, which translated to, “Would die in order to be a real furry.” His tagline on messages: “I’d rather die on paws than live on feet … FFL — Furry for Life (Keepin’ it furry since 1998).”

On March 4th, he wrote:

To anyone who cares or anyone who is reading this, but especially my friends; I might be going to jail.

I planned to shoot up my school and was caught while marking a map. I might be going to jail and I’m terrified. This isn’t a joke.

If I don’t send another journal within a week, I’m in jail.

Goodbye and good luck, especially you, Smookie, Brighty, and Silvermist.

NakamaCon cancelled amid setbacks, staff shortages

Furry News Network - Tue 15 Mar 2011 - 00:53

Author: GreenReaper

Second-year Wisconsin convention NakamaCon has been cancelled less than three months before launch, according to con chair Chessie Sutherland. [tip: pmart and SkippyFox]

The replacement website outlines a tale of woe – misprinted flyers, car acccidents, illness, financial shortages and other real life complications:

I realize it is three months from the convention. I know we could make it happen but we’d sacrifice a lot of our own lives to make it work. If any one of these things hadn’t happened we might still have a Nakamacon. Collectively, they’ve led to us being so far behind that recovery is unlikely.

However, the cancellation was followed by allegations by webmaster and payment system maintainer S-Config that Chessie made the decision alone, while local artist Jim Groat claimed the chair “never showed up to any of the meetings.”

Andrew Rabbitt reads “One Week” by Whyte Yoté

Furry News Network - Mon 14 Mar 2011 - 16:50

Author: alexfvance

There’s a certain thrill in the development and polarization of power roles. Yeah, you don’t want to let Foucault infect everything you think, but when one guy’s seated in a throne and another’s on his knees, it makes things easy to understand. Especially when you start to dress that dynamic in intriguing imagery- a torn suit, dark hardwood floors, looks that are centered in the whiskers rather than on his lips- and it’s no surprise why so many people get a special twitch in their nerves from a good dom/sub story.

Whyte Yote breaks open a treasure trove of glittering images in his story “One Week,” which you may have already read.

But we don’t want to leave the commuters out, either- so here is an audiobook version, as read by the one and only Andrew Rabbitt. Gas up the crude generator you use to recharge your Zune in a dystopian future, world’s last remaining furry!

Drawing Fantastic Furries

In-Fur-Nation - Mon 14 Mar 2011 - 01:58

Christopher Hart is a name well-known among those learning to draw: He’s put out several books of how to draw cartoon characters and characters for animation in the past. But now, he’s trying something pretty new.  His new book is called Drawing Fantastic Furries: The Ultimate Guide to Drawing Anthropomorphic Characters. That’s a pretty big claim, whot? Well here’s how the publishers describe it on Amazon: “What Is A Furry? A furry is an anthropomorphic being—an animal with human characteristics. Furries have fascinated artists going back thousands of years and as seen in the influx of animal/human characters into popular culture, interest today is at an all time high. And now for the first time all in one volume, you’ll be able to take the next step to the outer limits of your imagination with the ultimate guide to drawing your own furries—Christopher Hart’s Drawing Fantastic Furries. After a basic lesson in the fundamentals of comparative human and animal anatomies, you’ll learn how to draw an entire menagerie of furry species, ranging from the adorable and charming super-cute furries to the seductive and super-popular glamorous furries to the warriors, wizards, vampires, and demons of the furry occult and fantasy realms.” The book is available this week in paperback from Watson-Guptill. The cover certainly grabs attention!

Dragon*Con Fandom Music Video Contest seeking Furry Music Videos

Furry News Network - Sun 13 Mar 2011 - 20:49

Alice and Furries at Dragon*Con 2008

Dragon*Con is the largest pop-culture, sci-fi and fantasy convention of it’s kind. The event hosts between 60 to 65 thousand attendees and spans 4 days over the labor day weekend, completely selling out all hotels in a two mile radius of down town Atlanta. Over the past three years, the convention has showed an interest in getting more furries to participate in the convention and its related programming. It is estimated that aprox. 2000 furries actually attend the event, however, only a few hundred ever really make there presence known. (Estimates based on actual registration data)

For the past 7 years, Dragon*Con has hosted a music video contest. With the contest growing to 100 entries in 2010, and attendance of the awards ceremony topping 400 attendees, the music video staff opted to split the competition into 2 segments – anime – the more traditional music video seen at conventions, and now a new “live action” category which can be made with film footage from any live action tv show or movie, or acted out by amateurs and filmed.

The organizers have been soliciting submissions from all fandoms – Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and even Twilight. Now they are reaching out and asking Furries to submit their muisic video creations.

Anyone interested in participating can read the rules at www.fmvawards.com. There are 2 submission deadlines left for the 2011 contest. The next deadline is April 15.

The categories and explanations are as follows:

  • Romance – Videos that focus on a love story between characters.
  • Drama – Videos that evoke an emotional response from the audience through a medley of music, video, and editing which usually involves dramatic subject matter or dramatic elements from the anime.
  • Comedy – Videos that contain parody or wacky content. As long as someone thinks it is funny you will probably be okay.
  • Action – Videos that focus on action whether it be fighting sequences, fast-paced imagery or motions of characters. Think ACTION!!
  • Fun – Videos that make you feel good. They get your body moving, feeling the groove, or just bring a smile to your face. Dance, Trance, Techno, Happy slice of life pieces and other types of the sort.
  • Other – This category is for videos that don’t fit into the rest of the categories. Movie Trailers, Horror, Experimental Videos, WTF’ers, etc., they all go here.

There is a hope that at least a few submissions will be furry or furry relates, and it is hoped that there will be some fursuit videos included.

Below are the two videos that did best in the live action category last year:

1st place: Live Action
