Dreamhost ditches lulz.net after DMCA deluge

Furry News Network - Thu 10 Mar 2011 - 00:54

Author: GreenReaper

Following the trend of imageboard mishaps, lulz.net has been thrown off Dreamhost after HardBlush founder Onta sent a notification of copyright infringement. [tip: Freehaven]

Apparently this was far from the first notification sent by disgruntled copyright-holders. Regardless, lulz.net’s administrator appears confident that the board will soon resume service.

Eastern Cougar Finally Declared Extinct In U.S.

Furry News Network - Wed 9 Mar 2011 - 21:48

Author: AshMCairo

“For years, biologists have argued that the eastern cougar is extinct in the United States. In fact, many believed that puma concolor cougar had been extinct for more than 100 years.

Reports of sightings, however, made the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hesitant to make an official declaration. Now, after an extensive review, biologists and conservation officials agree: The eastern cougar is officially extinct.”

Review: ‘OMG! With Peaches Geldof’

Furry News Network - Wed 9 Mar 2011 - 19:54

Author: The Chained Wolf

I was dreading to hear what Peaches (daughter of Bob) Geldof would ask a bunch of furries – in the end it was more what Dom Joly said which was annoying.

For those outside of the UK, OMG! With Peaches Geldof is a TV show on the digital network ITV2 which does not have a good reputation. It is considered by many to be cheap, tacky, low-brow infotainment, as is most of ITV2′s output.

It was this cheap material that I had to wade through before they got to furries. For most of the time I as flicking between channels hoping that these fame-obsessed idiots would soon get off the screen. As a result I did not have high expectations of their coverage of the furry fandom.

I was expecting the usual stuff about having sex in fursuits to be trotted out. However, I was pleasantly surprised.

When Karl Barks did Barney Bear

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 9 Mar 2011 - 03:51

Some rare and seldom-seen comic book work by Uncle Scrooge creator and artist Carl Barks is coming our way this June, thanks to IDW Publishing. It’s a new hardcover collection called Barks’ Bear Book. Here’s the publisher’s description from Amazon: “Carl Barks tops the list of greatest comic book artists of many devoted fans around the world. He has often been called ‘The Good Duck Artist’ by avid readers of all ages of his Disney Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics. Those Duck stories have been reprinted and loved again and again by millions. But, while the Duck oeuvre is easily obtainable, only a few elite fans have gotten rare glimpses of yet another fabulous, alternate universe that Barks created around the classic animation characters Barney Bear and Benny Burro. Hidden in rare, Golden Age comics only Scrooge McDuck could afford are wonderful, full-color fantasy and fun stories as only Barks can write and draw ‘em! Collected for the first time in a deluxe, hardcover, full-color tome are all of these masterpieces, meticulously restored. The Barks’ Bear Book is edited and designed by Eisner-Award-winning comics historian Craig Yoe, with a fascinating introduction and special cover is by Barks-devotee Jeff Smith, the best-selling graphic novelist of the Bone comics series.”

Book Review: Warriors

Furry News Network - Tue 8 Mar 2011 - 15:58

03/08/2011
By: Rainstar

WarriorsMany, if not all, furries are aware of several great books that use anthropomorphic animals as their main characters. Such titles include the infamous Watership Down and the illustrious Red Wall. Many are also familiar with the very popular children’s series, Warriors written by Erin Hunter. Warriors is a very popular fantasy series that is centered around feral cats struggling to survive in the world. They face many challenges such as hunger, disease, natural disasters; lose of land, genocide, and war. The books also take an in-dept look at human problems and emotions, including: love, hate, loyalty, betrayal, scandal, religion, honor, valor, respect, desperation, weakness, jealousy, and anger.

These books could even be considered worthy of being taught in college. Erin Hunter’s superb writing style leaves you on the edge of your seat with beads of sweat running down your back. This book has many wonderful life lessons and morals that can be used in everyday situations. I find myself quoting the books more and more in my life. Don’t let the fact that it is a children’s book turn you away. These books have elements of all the popular genres of literature. The intense fight scenes satiate the barbaric war story lover; the love and heartache aspect will certainly satisfy any romantic; the ambiguity and betrayal portions will appease any mystery lovers; and the fact that the main characters are bloody talking cats will please any and all sci-fi and fantasy fans.

As of now, the book series contains over thirty books. These include the four, six book sagas, three large “Super Editions,” four “Field Guide” books, and a dozen or so manga. I own each of these books and have read each one at least three times respectively. Each normal book tops at around 300 or so pages. The “Super Editions” usually finish at just under 600. The “Field Guide” books usually consist of only 150 or so. The manga contain around thirty or forty illustrated pages. Axiomatically, the books are generally an easy read with large enough sized font. I’ve finished a book in less than two hours before and become saddened when I realized I have to wait a while before the next book comes out.

I recommend this book to anyone who can read a word of English. This book is certainly one to not be missed. Its fun, entertaining, simple to understand, and has moral values that will leave you thinking. The loveable characters, anxiety-inducing cliffhangers, hiss-and-boo antagonists, and relatable situations keep you glued to your seat and engrossed in the book until your light goes out. The superior writing ability and use of hundreds of literary devices make these books a primary choice in topics of book reports and research papers. I would even go as far as to say that these books rival the writing styles of F. Scott Fitzgerald – author of The Great Gatsby -and J. D. Salinger – author of The Catcher in the Rye.

These books are available wherever books are sold. Paperback editions are less than $7. Hardback editions are less than $17. They are also available on the Kindle store for significantly less, less than $5.

The Warriors Series: 10 out of 10.

Georgia Furs – Post FWA Bowling & Dinner Meet

Furry News Network - Tue 8 Mar 2011 - 14:20

A Southern Tradition continues after Furry Weekend Atlanta closes for 2011. Georgia Furs is sponsoring their annual post-con Bowling Meet and Dinner for anyone who remains in Atlanta, Monday, March 21.

The event starts off at Ten Pin Alley bowling center located in Atlantic Station. Ten Pin Alley is a high end bowling alley and night club. The facilities are very well kept and service is listed as excellent. Ten Pin is not your average Saturday night out with the fursuiters bowling alley – they have a world class bar and restaurant located in the facility, but you’ll want to wait for dinner later with the rest of the group. Speaking of which, Fursuits are welcomed and there will be a changing area.

After bowling, the event will move to Mary Mac’s Tea Room for dinner. The 65 year old restaurant is a true Atlanta landmark and southern tradition that should not be missed. The menu features classic southern dishes including fried chicken, country fried steak, meat loaf and over 30 side items including mac & cheese and fried green tomatoes. Dinner always comes with your choice of breads including muffins, corn bread and light southern biscuits. It wouldn’t be complete without deserts including bread pudding, fruit cobblers and of course, banana pudding.

You can purchase a complete package including bowling and dinner for $52, which includes transportation cost between Ten Pin Alley and Mary Mac’s, or you can purchase just bowling for $25, or dinner for $25. All packages include tax and tip, and for bowling, it also includes shoe rental.

You can sign up for the event now at MyFWA.com – listed under the “FWA Events” button, or register at the convention through Sunday night at 7:00pm. Online Registration closes at 7:00 pm Sunday, March 20th. After then, you will be able to register at the venues, but the prices will go up $10, so please register early!

Bowling will start at 4:00 – you will want to arrive early if you need to change into your fursuit. Plan on being ready to leave the bowling alley no later than 6:30pm.

Dinner at Mary Mac’s will be at 7:00pm

These Guys Are Putting All Web Culture, from Furries to Lulz, In a Book

Furry News Network - Tue 8 Mar 2011 - 12:04

Posted by Don_Caldwell
on Monday, Mar 07, 2011
The three guys from MemeFactory, a live performance about web culture, want to write a book about the Internet, and they’ve made a Kickstarter page to make it happen.

As experts in Internet culture (one of them is currently pursuing a “Ph.D in lulz”) they decided they have way too much to say to fit everything into their live shows. To remedy this, they are compiling together a “Txt.book” filled with humor and insight into the wonderful world of image macros, remix videos and lemon parties.

Chock-full of the media we study, this text will contain ideas of use and interest to all corners of web culture: from b-tards to moral-fags, from redditors to SA goons, from “academics” to furries.

In case you’re still wondering what the book will actually be like, consider:

Will Goatse make an appearance in the book? Probably.

Will it also be a usable classroom text? Absolutely.

Has this ever happened before? Good god, we hope not.

They have also decided to use the Cory Doctorow model of distributing free digital Creative Commons licensed PDFs on the web, and will be selling print editions at their MemeFactory shows.

Having worked with these guys in the past, and after seeing several of their shows, I’m very excited to see what they come up with. Be sure to check out their latest show from Social Media Week São Paulo.

Meeting 003: “Thou Shalt Not Kill” by FuzzWolf

Furry News Network - Tue 8 Mar 2011 - 10:59

Author: toonces

Maybe it’s about time Skip and I come clean about something-

You see, we’re- we’re robots. We were programmed by Alex Vance to run the book club arm of his furry publishing empire. And while we hope you won’t hold our lack of souls against us, it does explain the minor kink in our programming that causes us to identify so well with characters such as Unit JVCS3163- who you possibly know by his slave name- who skirt the line between real and unreal. Especially since that can be a rather potent source of some pretty steamy pulp. Which, as emotionless droids, Skip and I see as intriguing new territory.

If you haven’t had a chance to read the story yet, here are the text and the audiobook, including  a free eBook copy you can take with you wherever you go.

Two-headed tortoise born in Slovakia

Furry News Network - Tue 8 Mar 2011 - 10:53

Author: Rakuen Growlithe

large_mutant-torrtoise-two-heads.jpgA two-headed, five-legged tortoise was born in Slovakia two weeks ago, and displayed in Žilina on March 7.

The left head is named Magda and the right, Lenka. They are conjoined twins of a sulcata tortoise native to the Sahara Desert. If the tortoise survives to adulthood it may reach a length of 1m and weigh up to 75kg.

Although all are scientifically known as chelonians there is often confusion about the terms tortoise, turtle and terrapin. Although there are regional differences, a generally accepted definition is that chelonians on the land are tortoises, those in the sea are turtles and the ones in ponds/lakes/rivers/swamps are terrapins.
