R2-Central Droid Builders vs Furries
First, it was the Klingons and Trekkies bowling against furries – Video here: G4 Coverage. Now, its the craftmen behind some pretty cutting edge Astromech Droids.
Last night 5 members of R2-Central went to play with the Furries in a bowling game. R2-Central got their butts kicked but we all had a great time. Here is the after game group shot.

Drawing Fantastic Furries
Christopher Hart is a name well-known among those learning to draw: He’s put out several books of how to draw cartoon characters and characters for animation in the past. But now, he’s trying something pretty new. His new book is called Drawing Fantastic Furries: The Ultimate Guide to Drawing Anthropomorphic Characters. That’s a pretty big claim, whot? Well here’s how the publishers describe it on Amazon: “What Is A Furry? A furry is an anthropomorphic being—an animal with human characteristics. Furries have fascinated artists going back thousands of years and as seen in the influx of animal/human characters into popular culture, interest today is at an all time high. And now for the first time all in one volume, you’ll be able to take the next step to the outer limits of your imagination with the ultimate guide to drawing your own furries—Christopher Hart’s Drawing Fantastic Furries. After a basic lesson in the fundamentals of comparative human and animal anatomies, you’ll learn how to draw an entire menagerie of furry species, ranging from the adorable and charming super-cute furries to the seductive and super-popular glamorous furries to the warriors, wizards, vampires, and demons of the furry occult and fantasy realms.” The book is available this week in paperback from Watson-Guptill. The cover certainly grabs attention!
Dragon*Con Fandom Music Video Contest seeking Furry Music Videos
Dragon*Con is the largest pop-culture, sci-fi and fantasy convention of it’s kind. The event hosts between 60 to 65 thousand attendees and spans 4 days over the labor day weekend, completely selling out all hotels in a two mile radius of down town Atlanta. Over the past three years, the convention has showed an interest in getting more furries to participate in the convention and its related programming. It is estimated that aprox. 2000 furries actually attend the event, however, only a few hundred ever really make there presence known. (Estimates based on actual registration data)
For the past 7 years, Dragon*Con has hosted a music video contest. With the contest growing to 100 entries in 2010, and attendance of the awards ceremony topping 400 attendees, the music video staff opted to split the competition into 2 segments – anime – the more traditional music video seen at conventions, and now a new “live action” category which can be made with film footage from any live action tv show or movie, or acted out by amateurs and filmed.
The organizers have been soliciting submissions from all fandoms – Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and even Twilight. Now they are reaching out and asking Furries to submit their muisic video creations.
Anyone interested in participating can read the rules at www.fmvawards.com. There are 2 submission deadlines left for the 2011 contest. The next deadline is April 15.
The categories and explanations are as follows:
- Romance – Videos that focus on a love story between characters.
- Drama – Videos that evoke an emotional response from the audience through a medley of music, video, and editing which usually involves dramatic subject matter or dramatic elements from the anime.
- Comedy – Videos that contain parody or wacky content. As long as someone thinks it is funny you will probably be okay.
- Action – Videos that focus on action whether it be fighting sequences, fast-paced imagery or motions of characters. Think ACTION!!
- Fun – Videos that make you feel good. They get your body moving, feeling the groove, or just bring a smile to your face. Dance, Trance, Techno, Happy slice of life pieces and other types of the sort.
- Other – This category is for videos that don’t fit into the rest of the categories. Movie Trailers, Horror, Experimental Videos, WTF’ers, etc., they all go here.
There is a hope that at least a few submissions will be furry or furry relates, and it is hoped that there will be some fursuit videos included.
Below are the two videos that did best in the live action category last year:

The finalists for the 2010 Ursa Major Awards, the “People’s Choice” of the fandom, have been announced, and voting has begun. Check the list of the nominees, as well as our Editor’s choice for each category.
Best Motion Picture
Alpha and Omega
How to Train Your Dragon
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole
Toy Story 3
The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Editor’s Choice: You gotta go with How to Train Your Dragon on this one, right? Granted, Toy Story 3 is a far superior film, but it’s not a furry film. The other three films in the category are nowhere near as good, despite what certain dragons keep trying to tell me.
Best Dramatic Short Work or Series
Adventure Time With Finn and Jake
“Foxy Bingo”
Mongrels
“Orangina Naturally”
The Regular Show
Wallace & Gromit’s World of Invention
Editor’s Choice: Honestly as long as anything but Foxy Bingo and the Orangina campaign win, I’d be fine. Yes, I know what fox was a dancing machine, and yes, god yes, that gay cougar is hot, but there is no way in hell the fandom should give an award to commercials for gambling and sugar water when some of the smartest written shows on television are in the same category.
Best Novel
Basecraft Cirrostratus by Justin Lamar
Descent by Phil Guesz
Otters in Space by Mary Lowd
Save the Day by DJ Fahl
The Seventh Chakra by Kevin Frane
Shadow of the Father by Kyell Gold
Editor’s Choice: Wow, this is an exciting year for novels, and I can see it being a close race. That said, I’ve got to go with The Seventh Chakra. It’s definitely the most ambitious novel on the list, and Frane pulled off an exciting original thriller, and one of the most unique novels I’ve read from the fandom.
Best Short Fiction
Bridges by Kyell Gold
“False Dawn” by Kyell Gold
“Felis ex Machina” by EO Costello
“Gerty and the Doesn’t-Smell-Like-a-Melon” by Mary E Lowd
The Peculiar Quandary of Simon Canopus Artyle by Kevin Frane
Editor’s Choice: I’m leaning towards Bridges in this category. It was one of those experiments that did something new, even if it was a bit… superfluous. It’s hard to argue the literary merits of writing the same spit-roasting scene three times, but hey, there it is. That said, Simon Canopus also has a cool experimental writing feel to is, as the Cupcake branded books tend to have.
Best Other Literary Work
Furpiled #4 by Leo Magna
Different Worlds, Different Skins edited by Will A Sanborn
Iron Claw Bestiary by Chris Goodwin
i.s.o. #1 by Vince Suzukawa
Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary by Dave Sedaris
Editor’s Choice: In any other situation I’d automatically say Dave Sedaris, but his latest book is actually one of his weakest, so go for one of the fandom made choices. Furpiled and i.s.o. both are cool for slice of life stuff, and the Iron Claw Bestiary is something that nerds tell me is pretty cool.
Best Graphic Story
Concession by Immelmann
Furthia High by QuetzaDrake
Cruelty by Rukis
Lackadaisy by Tracy J. Butler
Twokinds by Tim Fischbach
Editor’s Choice: Lackadaisy. No question. The others are good, but don;t really compare, except maybe Cruelty for it’s potential. Rukis has the art talent, and if she can tighten up her storytelling I can easily see her winning this award in the future, but not this year.
Best Comic Strip
“Broken Plot Device” by Lis Boriss
“Faux Pas” by Robert and Margaret Carspecken
“Little Tales” by Genesis Eve Whitmore
“Housepets!” by Rick Griffin
“Sandra and Woo” by Powree and Oliver Knörzer
Editor’s Choice: Everyone’s got a favorite, just pick one. They’re all good.
Best Magazine
Anthropomorphic Dreams Podcast by Will A. Sanborn
Heat #7 published by Sofawolf
New Fables Summer 2010 edited by Tim Susman
South Fur Lands edited by Bernard Doove
Tales of the Tai-Pan Universe edited by Gene Breshears
Editor’s Choice: I’m tempted to say go for Anthro Dreams because it might spur an entire Podcast category next year (God knows there are enough of them to warrant it). But there are so many great stories in New Fables that I can’t snub it. Go with that.
Best Published Illustration
Big Red: Lady Sings the Blues by Richard Bartrop
Cenotaph by Susan Rankin-Pollard
The Seventh Chakra by Kamui
Shadow of the Father by Sara Palmer
New Fables Summer 2010 by Mary Mouse
Editor’s Choice: All of these illustrations are fantastic and every one of them is deserving of the award. These are some of the best talent the fandom has to offer. Personally, Kamui’s The Seventh Chakra is one of the most eye catching covers I’ve seen. It also has an array of symbolism that tie it in with the book. Plus it’s bright fucking yellow.
Best Game
Disney Epic Mickey
Furry Basketball Association
Rocket Knight
Sam & Max: Season 3, Episode 1: The Penal Zone
Sonic Colors
Editor’s Choice: There’s only one game on here that is done by the fandom, for the fandom. I don’t care if you like basketball, or like roleplaying, the Furry Basketball Association is a beast that is fueled by talented and dedicated players. Add on to that, it’s fun to follow even if you’re not participating. That’s way cooler than an XBLA game about a franchise everyone forgot about.

Review: ‘Pokémon’ evolves a real story with ‘Black’ and ‘White’
Author: crossaffliction
The fifth generation of Pokémon began by announcing a semi-anthro fox over a year ago. Now, Black and White have hit your local video game outlet.
After four generations, Pokémon is a household name. Like the Nintendo DS – hosting five versions of the game, not counting side-trips like the Pokémon Ranger and Mystery Dungeon series – the Pokémon franchise is all but a license to print money.
Add a few critters and upgrades, slap on Pikachu’s friendly face and shove it out the door, right?
Wrong. This generation of Pokémon has evolved.

via Switched
An ingenious idea: Let those with “incongruous” dating appetites admit their kinks and quirks quietly, and, when no one is looking, have a match service pair them with potentially like-minded weirdos mates. Microsoft filed a patent in 2009 — but made public last week — for its own online dating service, with an algorithm into which users can secretly enter “private affinities,” thus matching up with people of similar “fringe interests” (especially those conflicting with the user’s public persona). The example of “interests” Microsoft refers to is, of course, people who dig comic books. Yeah, COMIC BOOKS. Wink-nudge.
While there’s no news as to whether or not this service will ever become a reality, it’d be interesting to see an online dating system that lets singles be more honest and forthright. The patent reads: “Most users of such conventional systems understand that any affinity (or other information) included in an associated profile or space can be viewed by any third party who accesses that profile. This situation can substantially serve as a chilling effect on self expression or at least result in a profile that is a less accurate or less comprehensive representation of the associated user.”
Basically, if you are worried about how prospective dates might take your taste for cosplaying as a Victorian-era spy, you can discreetly let Microsoft know that period dramas and espionage are kind of your thing, and hope the system will find you another person who digs monocles (and maybe manacles?) as much as you. So, let loose — and hope Microsoft doesn’t tell.

Owners of Fur Affinity, FurBuy clash over auctions
Author: Sonious
The furry marketplace heated up today as FurBuy owner Jurann was “permanently banned” from Fur Affinity for “false threats against users holding auctions on FA instead of furbuy” and “disruption of the community, drama starting and interference with user transactions.”
FA’s Dragoneer gave his opinion of Jurann’s attempts to pressure artists into using FurBuy:
Frankly, I’m sick of Jurann constantly threatening users, encouraging them to “Go to Furbuy…or else!”
In response, Jurann said Dragoneer “[took his] legal advice as a threat,” while maintaining that FTC auction guidelines apply to Fur Affinity:
It’s a simple fact that there ARE rules and guidelines, and they are quite clearly not being followed on FA at present.

An irritated fan punched Goldy Gopher in the face during a men’s gymnastics meet Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion.
During the meet, the University of Minnesota mascot sat behind Douglas Dokken, 60, and started “messing with him,” witness Barry Colthorpe said. Goldy tapped Dokken on the shoulder and ruffled his hair.
Colthorpe said Dokken was ignoring Goldy’s antics, but within a couple of minutes, he snapped, turned around and punched Goldy in the face.
Goldy froze, but within moments of the first punch, Dokken wailed another, forcing Goldy to leave the area.
“I think it was clearly amusing — it’s not something you see every day,” Colthrope, 27, said. “It was just two people fighting, but if one of them is dressed up as a 7-foot gopher, then it’s pretty amusing.”
