Bad experiences within the fandom and some observations

Furry Reddit - Wed 25 Apr 2012 - 03:06

Now, I'm not going to go on a rant as a rant is utterly pointless, but I am rather here to collect thoughts and opinions on something that has been bugging me for a while. I am not here for hating, but I'm truly curious about the topics about to be spoken of.

I will be starting this wall of text off with my bad experiences in the fandom. Just about every single experience I've had with furries to this point has been bad. Such experiences are rather offputting. One would assume that these bad experiences happen only once in a while, but they seem to be fairly common. I've had people manipulate myself and others for their fascination. I've had people lead others on with schadenfreude in mind. I've had people just downright be an asshole. I've also had the worst relationship of my life with a furry (another story for another time). These are just personal experiences and I try not to apply what I've experienced to the fandom as a hole, but it can be hard sometimes.

Now, I'm going to go on to my observations. From what I've seen, a lot of the fandom is...negative to say the least. A lot of furs seem to incite drama for either their own entertainment, or just because they seem to can't live without it. I've also noticed a few furs downright reject to interact with others if they're not part of a certain cliche. This doesn't seem to be as common, but I've noticed it from time to time. Another thing I've noticed is that, while the fandom presents itself as openly accepting of everyone, accepts almost no one at the same time. My evidence here are "babyfurs," those who are overweight, people outside of the fandom (this one seems rarer than the others), some people of rare fetishes, and just general hatred inside the fandom itself (a comic I noted a while ago about "gayfurs" rejecting "straightfurs" or I suppose vice versa). The last thing is that I've never understood the fight between the furs who reject yiff and those that embrace it.

Now I'm going to note a few things. While this post has been largely negative til now, I'm not going to let it get in the way of the few positive things I've seen in the fandom. Seeing the sort of "togetherness" at Anthrocon 2011 was inspiring and uplifting. Having fun with a few random furs in the game room showed that it's not all bad, or at least until the Brawl tournament starts. Also, seeing furs donating money to save a restaurant (Fernando's) in my hometown of Pittsburgh was absolutely amazing. It felt very good to see the fandom come together for that cause which was altruistic (even though seemingly symbiotic in nature as well). However bright these moments are in my memory, the negative things still manage to come through just because they're so distinct and numerous.

Now is the part I ask questions. Is any of this behavior as common as it seems? Or is it just isolated and I've had terrible luck the last few years? What positive experiences have you had in the fandom that have stood out in your mind? Negative experiences? What is your general view on the fandom as a whole? What exactly is proper etiquette on FurAffinity?

Any thoughts or opinions on my wall of text is most definitely welcome. If you have any questions for me, I will be more than happy to answer them in as timely a manner as possible, so long as it's not too personal a question. I would also like to mention that I appreciate the time you have taken to read (or at least skim through) this post. Thank you for your time.

Planning on playing Guild Wars 2?

Furry Reddit - Tue 24 Apr 2012 - 09:22

I sure as hell am. I've begun a community blitz on various sites and community building domains. Of course the one I've had the biggest response to so far is FA. But I've opened pages in Reddit and Gaming Furever too.

Guild Wars 2 is going to be big. I'm only trying to do my part to bring the community together so we can play together, rather then next to each other.

Can anyone help me with a character design? Any feedback helps!

Furry Reddit - Tue 24 Apr 2012 - 00:43

It's for my newer character Allistair http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7791273/

I've always wanted to make some sort of gryphon-ish character. But I'm not sure what kind of feet/legs/paws he should have. Scaley bird talons? Soft paws? Human feet? BAH

A Children’s Classic Returns On-Line

In-Fur-Nation - Mon 23 Apr 2012 - 19:55

Sweet Pickles is a classic educational children’s book series by Ruth Lerner Perle, Jacquelyn Reinach, and Richard Hefter which was published by Holt, Rinehart & Winston from 1977 through the mid-1990′s. Each of the 40 full-color books portrayed the adventures of the inhabitants of the town of Sweet Pickles: 26 anthropomorphic animals (one for each letter of the alphabet) who get into various “pickles” because of their all-too-human flaws… and who must learn important life lessons to get out of them. The Wikipedia entry for Sweet Pickles details each of the characters such as Accusing Alligator, Moody Moose, and Temper Tantrum Turtle. After having been out of print for the longest time, the entire series is now returning on-line in a brand-new on-line series. But not just the books: Now the original stories are presented as digitally-enhanced e-books with professional sound-effects, narration, and character voices by award-winning voice actors. For a limited time the first e-book in this new series, Very Worried Walrus, is available as a free download at the Apple iBookstore. You can find out more about the return of Sweet Pickles at www.sweetpickles.com/fob.html, and also check them out on Facebook.

Just starting out in the fandom, and would like a bit of guidance.

Furry Reddit - Mon 23 Apr 2012 - 19:35

1st: Fursona

How should I approach this? Should I try to make it myself, have it look like me, etc. Any help is welcome like which species, color, etc. (I know this is personal opinion, but some tips for choosing them would be appreciated.

2nd: Do I have to do something?

Do I have to draw relatively good to be part of the community? (this may seem like a foolish question, but I've seen a lot of casual art, amateur, and I, frankly, cannot bodies with a recognizable form. I've given up on it, so maybe I can try to again, given That I actually feel like it.)

3rd: Are there any must-see material?

Like Atlas Shrugged for objectivists, Wolfenstein3D For true FPS gamers, the bible for christians, etc. You get my point... Something that practically defines this culture.

4th: Is everyone into, or everyone likes, wearing fursuits?

'cause, I don't know, for me it's kind of...pointless, if you want.

5th: what kind of treatment would I receive if I told openly I like this?

I must say, I doubt my friends, or anyone here, really knows, or think they know, what a furry is.

I should say, that I've been looking at furry art (mainly porn, cause that's how I got introduced to this world) since somewhere near new year 2009-2010. I ask these questions, cause I've wondered about them, and never got a definite answer, or simply have no clue about it.
