Feeling Disconnected from the Fandom

Ask Papabear - Thu 4 Oct 2012 - 13:59
Papabear,

How can we improve our fandom in the present days? I've seen lots of furs being rude to other furs and even forgetting people they know adding and then deleting and showing their true selves in posts and conversations. It all seems most furs have been forgotten like myself. Maybe people are forgetting others because of the posts in the past like when I was badly depressed or maybe other things came up. Some furs seen to have gone astray and pushing others away. At certain times I'm really needing furs in my life so we can all strive to help each other when needed.

I've said my words many times and journals and get brushed off as people don't care anymore like they did back then. The only time they care is when you post something about a family member or pet passing ... nothing else. I need some advice out there about how to deal with issues like this.

I'm not sure if it is all the younger people getting into furs or if it's those that think they are popular and can push others around and even people saying "I don't like you because you like such and such!" I've made many journals about this on FA and on Facebook and few replies. The only ones that would reply are those close to me, others can just push me away and sweep me under a rug and not care.

When I started the fandom back in mid/2005 I didn't see much drama like there is now so in a case the fandom is changing. It's even changing on instant messengers as well. How do we go about this? Do we delete those off our IM's that don't want to strike up a conversation or people who just don't care. People these days have IM's on phones so not knowing if they are online on the phone or online behind a computer. Also I'm usually the one to start the conversation then no reply from the other end. Also when asking someone how they are nobody asks how I am. Is that person not interested in me or do they not have the question in mind or do they have nothing that would be good for both of us to discuss? All in all it's all about what people's needs are and if they are met. Are they interested in the needs of others or do they think just of themselves?

Also I've felt that some furs like to stalk others and getting the feeling of this on FA and Facebook and not so much in other spots. The question is do people watch me for my fursuit and not the real me or are they going for numbers to compete with friends of theirs? Some furs are just strange! They add you and never say anything. They just watch you like a hound dog!

Dear Ace,

I think one of the things you are talking about is the lurker phenomenon. This is quite common, and not only in the furry community, and you shouldn’t take personal offense to it. For instance, I founded the BearFurries group on Yahoo and it has like 200 members but only a handful actually contribute to it; the rest are all lurkers. That’s okay, though. They can read comments and look at the art posts and stuff and enjoy it. Similarly, Papabear has lots of friends on Facebook, and it is impossible for me to stay in touch individually with all of them, so I do mass emails and such. I don’t believe I am unique in having two types of friends on FB: close friends/bruin brothers, and then people who are acquaintances. The important thing, Ace, is that you have some close friends and family you keep close tabs. The rest are nice to have, and some might develop into more than passing friends and become real friends, but don’t worry about it.

As for the problems of some furs feeling out of the loop, left out, disparaged by popufurs and people who think they can define who and who is not a furry, your letter could not come at a better time. The furry community has changed a lot. It has grown and diversified with the result being that it lacks cohesion, unity. That is why I founded The American Furry Association, which will be a place that all furries can elect to call “home.” Everyone—and I mean EVERYONE—who is interested in furry in any way is welcome.

The AFA will be ideal for people like you, Ace. It will be a resource center for everything from business to social news. It will be nonprofit and will accept donations to specific funs. There’s so much to say about it I can’t put it all in one letter, but check out the link at the right on the home page for more information.

Big Bear Hugs,

Papabear

Looking for inspiration

Furry Reddit - Thu 4 Oct 2012 - 13:00

Hey r/furry, I just recently decided to go about changing species for my fursona and am need of your help. I've decided to go with a lynx but can't seem to think of what I want to do for his fur pattern or color and was wondering if any of you could offer any inspiration. I'm going with the name Echo and he's roughly based off myself. I had some friends help me brainstorm with me when I thought of the species and persoanlity wise this is what we came up with.

loyal, quiet(ish), adventerous, stubborn at times, wise(advice and experience wise) and sneaky.

In terms of color I don't think I'm gonna do anything too bright and flashy. As for patterns I ak open to any idea.

If you have any questions just ask. Thank you in advance and to those that already have

Hey /r/furry, I want to make a Halloween themed game for the 30th

Furry Reddit - Thu 4 Oct 2012 - 10:07

So I want to make something for Halloween, but I feel that providing the world with yet more Halloween themed art would not be epic enough.

So I got the idea of making a Halloween themed flash game. However, I'm kind of out of ideas. I don't know what to make the game about. Here's some details:

  • It's going to be either a sidescroller game, or a top down adventure, unless there's some very awesome idea.
  • Must be relatively simple, although there's a lot of time to work on it so we'll see.
  • Must be Halloween themed (duh), although simply making the sprites and characters Halloween themed is enough.
  • Characters will be some kind of animals or anthros or whatever.
  • Can not be multiplayer.
  • Must not have advanced physics.
  • No 3D
  • It will be made with Multimedia Fusion 2.
  • It will of course be 100% free to play. I will post it to Deviantart and maybe Kongregate.
  • There might or might not be music. I do have FL studio, but I haven't yet learned to use it properly or make music in the first place.
  • I can do literally everything by myself so I don't necessarily need any help with the game.

But, I want your help! :) If you have any ideas or suggestions or other thoughts/comments, post here. What kind of game would you like to see/play? What story? What subject? What objective?

Plan/ideas so far (can change, even completely):

Player goes trick or treating with their friend. Then, all of the candy in the world suddenly turns into gold and diamonds, which "ruins Halloween". Then they set off to figure out why, and go to a Halloween party to ask for help. They can ask for different clues. But when the player is done, their friend has disappeared. Turns out they left with someone from the back door and the player goes after them. They can find treasure on the way, so they can get more candy in the end when they turn the treasure back into candy.

I have a fairly decent concept of the game now. I got an idea for the main antagonist, and the reason he took the player's friend, but I don't want to "spoil" it. :)

I've been looking around for a furry or fur-friendly CS:S server to fool around on. I used to play on SmokeyBurr's and Kali-Net, both of which are currently down. Is there anything out there?

Help finding a video

Furry Reddit - Wed 3 Oct 2012 - 19:40

I saw a video on here that was really moving and helped me to truly understand some things.... I forget what it's called now, and I'd like your help finding it, /r/furry! It has a guy in it who's always drawing his fursona, Kitsu, who is a ninja wolf, and across from him is the girl he really likes, then at home there's another furry who lives with him, who is a lion. That's really all I remember, can someone find it and link me to it please? Cheers.

Get Excited for: ‘Rise of the Guardians’

Weasel Wordsmith - Wed 3 Oct 2012 - 18:42

Just in case you weren’t already psyched to see a boomerang wielding Easter Bunny and a Santa Clause seemingly designed by San Francisco’s bear community, maybe this extended trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians will do the trick.

Click here to view the embedded video.

However, the gorgeous design, unique premise, and humorous dialogue are just a few of the things Guardians has going for it. The film also has one of the cooler promotional tie-ins I’ve seen.

William Joyce, writer for the film and acclaimed children’s author, created not just one, but five books to tie in to the Guardians film. And true to Joyce’s style, this isn’t a cheap cash in to drum up excitement before the film’s November release (give the man some credit!).

The Guardians of Childhood series is written as if it’s a longstanding book series, based off of the most ancient lore of the associated myths. Three novels and two picture books make up the series, providing background for each of the main heroes, accompanied by an art style different from the film itself (further lending to the narrative that DreamWorks’ film is based on this old series).

While the novels themselves skew a bit young, they provide some amusement, and can be read separately, though the novels are presented as a series.

So if you’re ready to swoon over the hot Australian bunny, or really want to see Santa Clause kick ass, you don’t have to wait until November.

Oldest example of modern furry art?

Furry Reddit - Wed 3 Oct 2012 - 17:44

I've been doing some research, and aside from the first con happening the late 1980s, with the fandom's roots in the mid 1970's, I haven't been able to find very early examples of 'modern' furry art (save from some stuff from 1996 from a very sort of fetishy artist.)

Can someone point me in the right direction?
