Future Furry marriage of Art/Engineering/Design?

Furry Reddit - Fri 4 Jan 2013 - 22:46

This is just hypothetical but whenever I fire up Solidworks, I'm reminded of a surface modeling tutorial that shows how to model a car exterior using just orthographic sketches. I believe that this technique can also be applied to Fursuit Heads/Paws/Feet/Tails etc. and aside from the fur I think technology of the future could one day allow us to turn art into reality. I'm not saying that current fursuits are bad by any means, this is a post about the potential future of fursuits.

Materials - In printing the actual Skull/helmet, jaw, and teeth I would use a stiff plastic as it's rigid nature lends itself to complex shapes, vents, wiring and rigging other printed parts to it. For ears and other flexible features, a flexible material would be used. This could involve any single or combination of printer(s) from companies like Stratasys, with Rigid Printers and Rigid/Flexible Printers. Materials will play a very big role in everything here.

Artificial Fursuit Facial/Ear/Tail Muscles - Obviously we're not at a point where technology like this is commercially available but I think using something like this would nearly eliminate the artificial movement that's created with current tech. Just think that once the research has been completed and artificial muscles and limbs have been openly sold for medical purposes, why won't the entertainment industries and other companies use this tech as well?

Flexible Displays - This tech is being announced at CES 2013 by Samsung. Now it's only available through them but as time passes the flexible OLED market will greatly increase with more manufacturers and the cost of such products will decrease such that a private company could be able to purchase customized OLED screens for use in fursuits. I think that having 3 screens, 2 for exterior eyes (very customizable!) and 1 inside for viewing an Augmented Reality Environment would create an effective means of awareness for the fursuiter. There would of course be a small high resolution camera placed on the head to provide the visual field. The possibilities for eyes would be endless!!

Facial Muscles - This brings us back to the artifical muscles, how would we control them? Combining technology from present examples like the FACE robot and the well known Neurowear Necomimi product we could control the artificial muscles that manipulate the flexible parts of a fursuit without having to actually interface with anything.

Okay now all this sounds VERY VERY VERY expensive for a fursuit... but, it is my humble opinion that in the not so distant future when these technologies have become more commonplace, the prices of such would be outweighed by demand from the Entertainment Industry, Museums, Music, Education and of course private investors. Therefore it might be a reality one day that a company takes in sketches of your Fursona and measurements of your body to create a very realistic and lifelike fursuit for a reasonable price.

I've been thinking about these possibilities for a while now, and right now I'm just looking to inspire conversation about the future because as far as I see it, the future is bright, oh so very bright!

Furry Is Having a Hard Time Making Friends in the Fandom

Ask Papabear - Fri 4 Jan 2013 - 12:20
Dear Papa Bear,

I've been a furry for about three years now. I do the works... Conventions, art, FurAffinity, forums. But in three years, I guess I haven't quite found what I'm looking for. I can't seem to get that grasp, that little trinket of furry affections. I have no furry friends.

I am truly not sure what I am doing wrong. I work to be rational, accepting, and kind. I am honest to people and I'm always willing to listen and give advice to a problem. I had issues making friends as a kid, but I've grown and high school has allowed me a good number of choice friends.... What is it about me that makes me slightly unfavorable to furries?

People aren't mean to me, but on the forums, Facebook pages, and everything I have joined I feel like an outlier. I comment and I joke and people don't seem to have an issue with my company... yet I never get that friend request or that helpful message. Could I be approaching this the wrong way? It almost feels like I've tried everything... From standing on the edge, to lightly inputting into conversation, to starting conversations, even sometimes almost invading other people's space, something I DON'T want to do! What now? Am I being too scientific about this? Could it be the social aspect of this community just isn't for me?

Dracorex,

* * *

Hi, Dracorex,

It’s difficult for me to see what you are doing wrong just by what you have written here. Other than furcons, it seems much of your activity has been online. Also, conventions are difficult places to make friends because they can be so big and overwhelming.

Furries, like everyone else in society, tend to form cliques and small social groups that can be difficult to penetrate at times. I remember when I was first invited to a PS party how completely outside I felt. Everyone already had their established social circles and when I said “Hi” to someone, they were polite, but I didn’t feel like I was making friends. Part of this, too, is that many furries are extremely shy. They feel more comfortable when they are among a tight-knit, small group of friends, in many cases (not the rule, but a trend I have noticed).

So, what you need to do is try and get into one of these smaller circles of friends. You can do this online and IRL. Online, try to find a small group that specializes in a hobby or interest of yours that is not really broad: don’t join an animated film lovers group because there will be too many of them; do join a group that specializes in, say, “Wiccans who love herb gardening” (as an example). On the real-life level, find a furmeet group in your area or a small social group. For instance, recently I was talking with a furiend of mine in Michigan who is new to the fandom. He didn’t have a clue how to get involved, so I asked him if he knew any furries in his area. Turns out he knew that several students at his high school had formed a furry group, so I encouraged him to introduce himself. He did so and was astonished how quickly he made new friends.

My guess, then, is that you have cast your net out too broadly over the ocean and scared the fish away. Try, instead, a rod and reel and fish for smaller game near your boat. Start small, and work your way up as you go.

And if you want to chat with a friendly bear, friend me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/grubbsgrizzly.

Hugs,

Papabear

Looking For A Specific Furry Cartoon.

Furry Reddit - Fri 4 Jan 2013 - 00:45

Whats that old British Furry cartoon about the bear and his friends? I think they solve mysteries or something. I saw one episode early early in the morning halfway through on KOCE (public channel) and I have no idea what it was called. In the episode the bear and his friends had to fight a fox in a biplane from stealing some jewels. It was pretty chill.
