Due to another user here on Reddit starting and pulling along a grueling topic on furries and the media, I thought it proper to post my own feelings on the matter, so that you all know that there’s at least one hopefully logical thinker out here in the fandom. Who knows, maybe you’ll agree with me? So, Hi. My name is Matthew Brown, or Kalas in the furry fandom. I work with 2 Gryphon on the 2 Sense show. For you fans out there, don’t worry- I’m just as in want of a new episode as you are.

My personal philosophy in the fandom is something that I dubbed the Border Between, or fully, the Border Between Fantasy and Reality. I know this sounds fairly basic, but it’s a concept that keeps me fairly socially acceptable. I have a life, surprisingly. I go to college, I have friends, I plan on getting a stable job and a proper income. These things cannot be openly touched by my furry life en masse. I can mention that I am one, maybe. But that’s as far as it can go. What some people in the fandom do Is openly wear furry accessories- As in, hats, ears, tails, paws- In public, or openly talk about their fetishes and esoteric likes. “Oh, sure, I wrap myself up in leather all the time!” It is in this case that the Border Between is broken. The real world and the fantastical world overlap into each other, causing everyday social heresy. It is imperative to me to keep the Border Between intact, which allows one to openly function as an every-day human being while allowing the furry side of them to be shown on the internet or at specific furry gatherings, such as meets and conventions. Even though these meets might be public, say at a park or something, they are still alright to attend due to the fact that it’s a group of people, and a scheduled event. It’s also not something that you’re doing –absolutely every day-.

The key to my philosophy and keeping up the Border Between lies in this outlets of the fandom, the social meets and online interactions. Keeping the furry lifestyle to myself (aside from people I know IRL who I’ll make passing inside comments to, subtly) on a day-to-day basis keeps my casual living fairly stress-free, at least free of stress caused by discrimination from the fandom.

And that’s about it. Feel free to ask me questions in the comments, but I just thought that with a terrible attention-grabbing voicing of ‘GO BE A FURRY IN PUBLIC AND ON THE NEWS’ that we had a week or two ago on this subreddit… We needed a counteraction. Hopefully you like this one.

If you live in London, like furries and enjoy water here is your chance to have a blast. So I was just informed this crazy fur meet is happening again this year; July 19th to be exact. Check out the link below, because it looks pretty bad-ass with parties and a fur suit walk. In 2011 350 furries showed up to do the walk, which is like a convention by itself.

Let me start off by saying the following:

1: My main goal here isn't to get into sexual, kinky, steamy, or erotic roleplays. I am wondering about what roleplay is like in this fandom, not how sexy it is.

2: Before you ask, I do not have a persona (or fursona... as some might call it), but I do intend to aquire, create, devise or commision one in the near future.

Ok, now on to the real post. What is furry roleplay like? What are the best places to roleplay with furries? What are the worst places to roleplay with furries? What are some general things to know when I roleplay with furries? Why do all my questions end with 'roleplay with furries'? Does it all relate to sexual acts in some way as the internet portrays it to? Give me the details! I need the details man... I can't keep going without them. Lookit... Lookit how bad my hands are shaking! I gotta have 'em!

But seriously, if you can answer some questions for me, it'd be very appreciated. I'm pretty sure if there weren't many furry RPers out there, I probably wouldn't be so open about being a furry, after all I am a huge roleplayer and it is the reason I am part of many fandoms.

I've had on online relationship with my boyfriend for almost 3 months now and I'd like to introduce him to my mom, but I don't know how to do it. I'm afraid that if I tell her about him, she will believe he is some deviant trying to lure people in online. She has done this before with a conversation she found on my phone involving some fur friends. She doesn't know I’m a furry though she does know I’m gay. Any advice?

Hi, Tobias,

Once again, furries and folks everywhere, an online relationship is not a real world relationship. If I were your mom and you introduced me to your online friend and said “I’ve been in a relationship with him for three months,” my first question would be, “Oh, yes? Where did the two of you meet and how?” And if you said, “Oh, we’ve never actually met except online in a chat room,” I would say, “Okay, call me when you have actually met and we’ll invite him to dinner.”

It’s cool that she knows and accepts you for being gay; if she accepts that, then being a furry would hopefully not be a big stretch for her, either, but don’t ask her to accept that the most important relationship in your life at present is with someone who only exists on a computer screen.

Your next step should be to meet your boyfriend somewhere in real life. At your place, at his place, somewhere in between, it doesn’t matter. If that’s not possible in any sense of the word, then go find a real boyfriend you can actually kiss and hold hands with. If it IS possible, then do so post haste, and then afterwards introduce him to your mother IN PERSON.
