A few thoughts...

Furry Reddit - Wed 29 May 2013 - 22:36

I have noticed very often that when artists post on this subreddit advertising their commissions they are often immediately downvoted and thus get little to no exposure. Often I really don't see what the problem is when it comes to saying "hey I'm an artist, a lot of you seem to be looking for one, here's what I can do and how much I charge." Even advertising of specials and the ever dreaded "emergency commissions" (no I really don't like it when people do that) sometimes deserve a little exposure. Yet r/furry just does not like them. Whether it's because they don't like the person's art or they think it shouldn't be a part of this subreddit, I do not know, but I'd much rather see artists advertising than the constant "I'm looking for an artist" posts. At least then I get to see art and get to know people like me.

Anyway I propose that we need a well trafficked subreddit for furry commissions. A place that artists and clients alike can search and advertise without clogging up r/furry with repetitive posts, are upvoted for the sake of mutual exposure and can simply make the subject as drama free as possible. Think about it, if we took away all those posts from r/furry, put them in one organised space, we could then save this subreddit for the art, videos, music and discussions we love, and leave the money matters to the people who should be dealing with them.

I for one would frequent a place like this. I know FA forums have this kind of set up so why shouldn't we? Disagree if you like but those posts asking for or advertising artists will never stop and I can see from experience that a lot of you really don't respond to them positively. If such a sub already exists, let's get it on that sidebar and make it well known! Otherwise I won't be making it (yeah I know... I said it so I should) because well, I don't hang around reddit enough to monitor things but it'd be awesome if someone stepped up to the challenge.

Thoughts complete.

EDIT: It's a thing now. Thanks Nsyse!

Prehistoric Pals with Pluck

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 29 May 2013 - 20:19

Playing in theaters now (in front of several movies) is the trailer for Walking With Dinosaurs: The Movie, produced by BBC Earth (of course) and coming to theaters this December. Interestingly, the producers are taking a somewhat anthropomorphic angle for this 3D CGI film: It’s actually narrated by the dinosaurs themselves as they go about their daily lives. In this story, we meet a young frill-head dinosaur, who is something of a runt in his herd — but who will grow up to be a great leader who will guide them through a dangerous world. The film is directed by Barry Cook (Mulan, Arthur Christmas) and Neil Nightingale (Enchanted Kingdom). Check out the trailer at Animation Scoop.

Santa Ana Furry Fandom Art Show

DailyFurBlog - Wed 29 May 2013 - 18:31

Hey Everyone!

I hope you have gotten a chance to take a look at Sy Husky’s season 1 finale of FVS which you can find HERE.

In other news I found an article talking about Santa Ana, California having a furry art show from June 1st to June 29th at a gallery called Avantgarden. The collection of furry art is said to be curated by Rodney Stansfield and will be up along with other art from other artists. So if anyone is around that part of California why not stop in and see the gallery?

So it's time to start putting work towards my next mixtape cover art, and I need a furry artist to do it.

Furry Reddit - Wed 29 May 2013 - 18:08

Right then.

Does anyone know any fitting artists I can get in contact with to comission such a task? Here or otherwise? I've been tossing around ideas and procrastinating on actually starting work on the whole project but now I'm fiddling around hopefully to get something started. [Damn lack of music theory knowledge.]

Info:

"Theme: Egyptian.

Release: Sometime in the Summer. I just looked up Ramses death date and I'm going to do it around then.

The project started off as a joke, but I'm making a whole egyptian themed beat tape with some songs based off of that *Courage the Cowardly Dog episode: "King Ramses' Curse."*

With that, my whole idea of the art goes: The setting is some museum focusing on ancient history. Fursona/Character is standing in front of an exhibit carved into the large wall like hieroglyphics. Among miscellaneous graphics the main picture that stands out is King Ramses, the model from the Courage episode, holding the slab in question, with a cameo from Courage, like in the opening sequence here. The words on the slab in the picture should remain, and somewhere in the picture, the title of the tape *Return of the Slab should be there. In front of the character is the original slab with the original markings. I don't think that'd be visible since everything is viewed as if you were behind the character, able to see the whole wall. The slab could work as a back cover though. Main focus isn't the character, just enough to know who it is.*"

Santa Ana gallery’s ‘Art of Furry Fandom’ connects public with Furry past and future

Furry News Network - Wed 29 May 2013 - 17:38
Author: Patch Packrat Mark Merlino and his friend Rod O’Riley might be called “first wave” furries from original geek culture, when that meant underground comics, fanzines and pen-pals. They held the first parties that turned into conventions, and WikiFur calls them “founding members of organized furry fandom.” Mark owns

I'm pretty sure they're not big enough for people, but I thought this kickstarter was interesting...

BunFur organiser chats to us about all things fur

Furries In The Media - Wed 29 May 2013 - 03:38

Queensland's NewsMail, which has previously reported on Bundaberg's "BunFur" meet, has started a series of Q&A articles with local furries. They begin with BunFur organiser Bingo Fox:

http://www.news-mail.com.au/news/bunfur-organiser-chats-us-about-all-things-fur/1886837/

EVERY day for four days we'll feature a 10-question Q&A with members of the furry community as their meet-up at the botanic gardens gets closer.

Introducing...

Bingo Fox (BunFur organiser)

1. When did you first hear about furries, and what made you join in?

Personally I heard about it in 2010. I had been attending pop culture conventions for years.

I saw a furry at a convention and wanted to know more, So I hopped on the internet and found out all about it and was hooked.

2. Describe the adventures of a typical fur meet:

Our furry meets are great opportunities to get together and have some fun.

Sometimes we attend local event, sometimes we go to the movies, have a barbecue or just coffee.

It's all about freindship. Most of the time we have an agenda to discuss something furry related, whether it be suits, performance or just everyday life.

3. What's your chosen animal, and why did you choose it above all others?

Personally I am a fox. Besides liking foxes it also fits my character and the way I act in the suit.

4. Has the success of furry meet-ups in Bundaberg been a surprise?

IT HAS. Last year's furry annual furry meet was a complete surprise, Maui and I thought we were the only furs in Bundaberg, then all of a sudden we had 20 people attend in 2012 and local furs have had a monthly meet-up since then too.

5. How do you source the fur suits, and are they difficult to get around in?

Suits are either made by their owner of purchased from a suit maker.

They can cost up to $5000 with most quality suits being around the $2000.

Kelly Hampson (Toska) owner of The Menagerie Costumes will be featuring some of her work at this years event, and yes, fur suits can be hard to move in, see out of and they are hot.

It takes a commitment to bring your character to life, but its so much fun that it's all worth it.

6. What would your advice be to someone who was thinking of getting involved?

Come along to BunFur.

Everyone is very freindly and accepting, we don't bite, well most of us.. .

Research on the internet or join the Australian Furry site.

You don't need a suit to be a furry!

7. What's the age range in your group?

I have people registered for BunFur from the age of 10 to 50.

8. When did the furry culture start?

Ohh I'm not quite sure but I think it was in the 70s or something.

9. What's the most unusual animal you have seen someone suited up as?

Definatly the Warg, its like nothing anyone has sen before.

It's classed as a quad suit, with the wearer having to walk on all fours.

This is our feature suit of BunFur this year and its amazing in action.

Come along to Furries in the Park from 10am on June 16 at the botanic gardens to have a close-up look.

10. Is there a celebrity or politician you think should suit up? If so, what as?

I nominate NewsMail online editor Crystal Jones to come and try it out, or NewsMail photographer Max Fleet, it's what a good reporter would do right?

Online editor's note: That's quite a challenge, Bingo :-)
