A Little Sympathy for Trolls

In-Fur-Nation - Sun 26 May 2013 - 20:13

Jay P. Fosgitt is a commercial and comic-book artist — among other projects he was the illustrator of Old McMonster’s Haunted Farm (written by Brent Erwin), which we made note of here previously. Now one of Jay’s latest projects (as writer and illustrator) is a full-color comic called Bodie Troll. “Jay’s creator-owned, all-ages comic set in the mythic village of Hagadorn and featuring a grumpy little troll named Bodie. While he aspires to be big and scary, he’s actually cute and cuddly, which confounds his attempts every time.” It’s available now from Red 5 Comics. Check out Jay’s web site to find out more about this and other projects, as well as his commission rates. Yes he does.

Help finding 2 fursuiters!

Furry Reddit - Sun 26 May 2013 - 19:38

I'm trying to find pictures of 2 fursuits I remember seeing quite a while ago. I don't know their names or their species, I just remember vaguely what they look like. One is mainly orange and the other is mainly blue (I think those are the colors, at least). They have various markings that are the same but are in different colors. Their eyes are half-circles and they look sort of unamused and sort of badass. They're fullsuits, and they're very high-quality. If anyone knows their names or can link me to pictures of them I'd really appreciate it!

Edit: I've found the suits I'm looking for, so in case you're curious what I was searching for, this is them.

Is It Okay to Be Single and Happy about It?

Ask Papabear - Sun 26 May 2013 - 18:19
Papabear,

I spent ten years in a dreadful emotional roller coaster of a relationship, but I have been a free man for over two years now, and at the risk of spewing a corporate jingle, I'm lovin' it.

I have a few ... *ahem* friends with benefits at the moment, but I'm not actively looking for anything more permanent. This surprises some people, but I don't feel any particular pressure to catch myself a husband or two any time soon. If the Universe decides to drop one in my lap, I won't complain, though.

Am I perhaps overreacting to the previous decade, or am I just being lazy? ;)

Stilghar

* * *

Hi, Stilghar,

It is actually the more well-adjusted person who can live happily alone in his/her own skin without the need for a mate. Personally, this bear has times when he enjoys being by himself and even gets a bit irritable when he doesn’t get the chance for some “me time.” (Yogi is great about this, actually, and gives me some space when I need it).

Although statistics and studies show that married couples tend to be somewhat more happy than singles, that doesn’t guarantee matehood will make you happy, especially considering that nearly half of all marriages end in divorce. Here’s an interesting article on the subject: http://science.howstuffworks.com/life/married-people-happier-than-singles.htm. Also, people who have been through a divorce (e.g., me) have a harder time being happy, so, if you consider that, then getting married gives you a 50/50 chance of later becoming much less happy than the average person.

I find your attitude about this very refreshing. You are living your life on your terms and letting love find you rather than desperately seeking it out. I’ve always felt that the more desperate we are to find a mate, the more unappealing that makes us to potential mates. A couple of examples: before I met my mate and he was working in a news room there was this woman who kept hitting on him. He told her she was gay (it wasn’t a secret) and to leave him alone, but she was convinced she could convert him (she was also after his salary, I think). She kept hanging on him like some kind of leech, and her desperation made her look pathetic; thankfully, she eventually gave up.

Another case: again with a homosexual person—in this case, my sister. She was at a party once and, because she wasn’t squirting hormones of desperation out of all her pores like the other young women at the party, the men were drawn to her, chatting with her, and having a good time. She had about half a dozen surrounding her at one point because these guys found her appealing, which she is: she’s pretty and she’s intelligent. I’m sure there were other women there, too, who were bright and lovely, but they were on the prowl. It’s a turn off.  I also recall a tenant my mother had named Susan. Susan was getting up in years and her “biological clock” was ticking. She wanted kids badly, so badly she started sleeping with almost anyone. These guys saw an easy mark and they would sleep with her and dump her. Sad.

Ironically, Papabear believes there is actually a higher chance of your finding a mate if you are not actively seeking one out. The reason is that, unlike other people, you won’t be looking in the wrong places, such as bars and online chat rooms. Instead, you will be out living your life, doing things you enjoy, where you are more likely to meet other people who enjoy the same things you do, which can lead to new friendships and even love.

I don’t think what you are doing is an “overreaction” to your split with your previous mate because it doesn’t sound like you are avoiding dates because you are afraid of them; rather, you are enjoying the single life, which is a healthy thing. You are not being lazy, either. If seeking out love sounds like a job to you, then that is a pretty strong clue you are not in the mood for it right now, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Enjoy your single life, your FWBs, and just being yourself. You have nothing to apologize for, you have no duties to fulfill to your fellow man, you are not obligated to have a spouse or devoted significant other. The only thing you should be concerned about is whether or not you are happy, and it sounds to this bear’s ears as if you are happy.

Hugs,

Papabear

Furry con surveyed on porn, fantasy, pets, politics & bronies

Furry News Network - Sun 26 May 2013 - 17:38
Author: GreenReaper Results have been released from an Anthropomorphic Research Project survey of 455 furs taken at Furry Fiesta 2013. 78% of females and 96% of males report viewing furry porn. Fur-funding week in review: 5-26-13

FurStarter - Sun 26 May 2013 - 09:21

Not playing with a full pack of wolves. Highlights this week: Terreria Tactics, Pelted Primacy. Alliteration: it’s so hot right now!

Tabletop gaming this week! The first project we look at is Terreria Tactics, a science fiction vs. fantasy skirmish card game. The setting won me over immediately, as it combines the best elements of slinky and visually interesting dragons with vaguely “Aperture Science”-esque robots, but it turns out there’s actually a GAME under the visuals! The second, Pelted Primacy, is self-consciously old-school, a handsome furry take on the standard “Bicycle” playing cards, a very attractive deck.

And then a bunch of other stuff.

Highlights

Terreria Tactics

terreria-smallTerreria Tactics
is a card-based strategy game designed to represent the small parties and turn-by-turn play of skirmishing RPG video games. Game play is small and focused, for a table of two or four players, with play, I’m guessing, from 1-2 hours.

The artwork really stands out. The setting is a medieval fantasy world, with anthropomorphic dragons and eagles, and presumably some other races, but they had me with the dragons. Artist MegillaKitty, who did today’s fantastic illustration in Terreria Tactics style, is the lead artist, lots of sneak previews on her gallery.  You can also see some of Arkristokat’s work on DA, another contributing artist.

Corbeau-TT-smallImmediately obvious “pros” to the game–the game designer has seriously done his homework, and the game starts out with strong play examples, with play-through videos on the kickstarter, so novices and outsiders can get a sense of the game. There are tactical elements, resource management, and a bit of the “Magic: The Gathering” element of “troops are the line of defense for the player herself.”  Players select a handful of characters, items, actions, and one location card, revealing their cards as they activate them, and characters can gain experience and complexity as the skirmish progresses forward.

In many ways the game echoes Magic: The Gathering, but with a tighter focus on a small, finite battle field (and, blessedly, smaller decks). The artwork and look of the product is very professional, and more extensive information is available on the TT Website.

Good luck, guys! Well-done writeup and slick-looking product. I’m waiting for my boxed set!

Pelted Primacy

"Joker" From Pelted PrimacyPelted Primacy is a much more traditional product–a deck of playing cards built to the “Bicycle” playing card standard. Much of the deck is reworked in small ways–the paw print pip cards stand out in particular as a cute touch. But the court cards have been reenvisioned as elegant furry nobles, brooding and somber as befits, say, the Queen of Spades–the joker’s always the only one that’s willing to crack a smile!

Recently DJKyota opened up some commission slots as a part of his higher-level goals (and, much to my surprise, used Corbeau as his banner art!) As I’m writing, I can’t help noticing that the “King of Hearts” slot is open. I can’t imagine that one will stay around long…I can think of a few foxes that would jump on that one :)

DJKyota, a word–if you swap out the current Jack of Clubs I will be very put out. Just so you know.

Projects Art

Lucid Dream: Fantasy Portrait Art (Ends: 6/1/2013)
Surreal transformations of pets and owners into glowing fantasy portraits
It’s worth it to watch the video on this one. The funder’s art is genuinely strange and fantastic.

Zombies in a Half Shell (Ends: 6/2/2013)
In a city wracked in fear, only the rebel Foot clan fights against the evil Zombie Ninja Turtles! Indie art book, web project.
Impressive art, incomprehensible pledge levels. Worth a tour of the project though.

Audio

Traveller (Ends: 6/5/2013)
An epic Doctor Whooves audio adventure from Pony in a Box Productions.
Team has a lot of experience in audio dramas…and ponies. Definitely by and for the fandom!

Books/Print

Benign Kingdom Presents: Midnight Monsters (Ends: 6/6/2013)
Art collections and graphic novels, including “Capture Creatures,” a Pokemon-inspired collection of 151 unique creatures and descriptions.
Not all of this is exactly relevant, but the poke-esque collection is charming.

The Chronicles of Jason Vann: The Case of the Melting Fox (Ends: 6/9/2013)
An ebook coming to print: a German Shepherd cop is called in to investigate a grisly death in a smelting factory.

A Bear’s Life: Teenage Stuffed-Animal Angst (Ends: 6/14/2013)
A bear’s photographic journey through a world that doesn’t understand him.
I wasn’t going to include this one, but the photo of the bear out on the streets in a cardboard box house pushed me over the edge.

Children’s Products

Fox Hollow Tales (Ends: 5/29/2013)
Beautifully illustrated children’s series set in 1830 New England.
Adorable. Wojer the badger is not for diabetics.

Kit & Kiya (Ends: 6/7/2013)
An educational series for young children; Kit the fox, his human mom Kaya, and a small menagerie sing and learn together. Puppets, live action…animation?
I wish there was a little more about the project available. She had me with “fox in kilt,” but more information would be helpful…

The Audrey Amaka Storybooks (Ends: 6/22/2013)
Sweet, cartoony illustrated book, featuring Audrey (a neckless giraffe) and her frankly awesome shoes.
Re: the promo video: Ventriloquist’s dummy. *shudder.* Also I have a profound, viceral reaction to the word “heartwarming.” But it IS pretty cute stuff.

Laslo the Lark (Ends: 6/29/2013)
A cute little cartoon-book about a bird who has to sing, even though he’s going to be eaten by a fox.
Okay, it’s not great, and more “talking animal” than anthro, but the illustrations in this one are really charismatic, give it a look :)

Clothing/Costumes

Electro Bear Paw Graphic Bear Line (Ends: 6/15/2013)
Launching a tee shirt collection with bold, abstract non-anthro bear designs.
Cute designs. Bears need more love out there.

Comics/Graphic Novels

The Good, The Bad, and The Monkey (Ends: 5/29/2013)
A classic spaghetti western. But with a monkey.
A Hellboy, Gorillaz, John Wayne, ACTUAL gorillas mashup.

Tristan & the Cuddly Defenders – A Teddy Bear’s Quest (Ends: 6/6/2013)
A team of stuffed animal adventurers out to protect children everywhere from Monsters under the Bed.
Voted the best way to combine a D&D fixation with a massive stuffed animal collection.

Memorial Comics Series (Ends: 6/9/2013)
Artist turning grief into an anthropomorphic action comic.
This…this is a bit hard to explain. An anthro comic memorial. Business plan is vague, but there’s real passion here.

Jade Dragon Book 1 (Ends: 6/19/2013)
American Manga graphic novel: Gathering together the beasts of the Zodiac to fight a world-threatening evil.
You can find the artist’s work at Deviantart. Look for “Friendship is Sisterhood” in particular.

A Tiger’s Last Song (Episode 1) (Ends: 7/10/2013)
A graphic novel of the final days of the thylacine/Tasmanian wolf, in the talking animal-survival story genre.

Events/Causes

Catmandu’s 3-Storey Carpeted Cat Tree (Ends: 6/5/2013)
A massive cat toy for human cats to sharpen their claws, lounge, and frolic at Burning Man 2013, and possibly summon giant alien cat overlords.
Would like to steer away from funding for events, things not everybody can attend, but I like the cut of their jib!

Film/Animation/Theater

Metamorphosis: Birth of a Dragon (Ends: 5/30/2013)
Documentary on Eva Medusa’s transformation and first appearance, reinventing identity through body modification.
Tattoo art and implants may not be everybody’s thing, but re-imagining your species and taking risks with identity is close to the heart of furry.

Dogonauts: Enemy Line (Ends: 5/30/2013)
The immortal battle of space dog and space flea plays out on a distant alien planet…3D stop motion animated short
Check the trailer!

Squirrel Girl: The Fan Film (Ends: 5/30/2013)
Fan film of Marvel’s least-known, most amazing hero: Squirrel Girl.
It’s exciting to see someone aim for low budget, and presumably hit it.

Samurai Chinchilla: The Animated Short (Ends: 5/31/2013)
Animated pilot episode about one chinchilla’s battle to save the world from an origami mastermind
Small fuzzy samurai and origami. This approaches perfection.

“Get Off My Badger!” Music Campaign Video (Ends: 6/1/2013)
An awareness video to fight badger-culling. Also, people dancing in frilly Victorian skirts and badger masks.
For £1,000, you could be badgerlicious. You want to be badgerlicious. But seriously, check the site, the costumes are great…

The Mascots (Ends: 6/2/2013)
Three animated shorts: teen angst and adolescent awkwardness from the eyes of sports mascots growin’ up.
I wish they had a tiny segment of the fully-realized animation. But there’s an animated husky AND an anthro moose.

Bronies – The Unreleased Tapes (Ends: 6/2/2013)
Crowdfunding the editing and release of extra footage/director’s cuts/additional storylines from last year’s “Bronies” documentary.

Urge for Going (Ends: 6/14/2013)
Mixed media, a girl chases her idol and her dream. Puppets, animation, foxes.
Maybe calling this “furry” is a stretch, but check the leading video, it’s got a great vibe, and foxes in suits.

Trek to Trot: A Fandom Tale (Ends: 6/15/2013)
A documentary about the greater world of fandoms, including Trek, Anime, Furry, Brony, keeping the lens tightly on the fans themselves.
It feels a bit like this is covering well-travelled territory, though looking at the greater tapestry of fans in general is novel…

The Pokémusical (Ends: 6/17/2013)
Pokémon, the unauthorized satirical musical. I don’t think there’s anything more to say, really.
So, the “End Pokemon Cruelty” public service announcement vid is well worth the price of admission. Or you can check out the big

Animals of the Urban Jungle – a Nature Documentary Series (Ends: 7/7/2013)
Animals in the cities, a six-episode web series in HD of the life and struggles of urban wildlife and their interactions with humanity. Foxes!
Plusses: It’s British, so MORE foxes. Negatives: The author did his PhD work on spiders.

Tabletop Games

Collie of Duty (Ends: 5/31/2013)
A fast-paced sheep-herding card game
“Where else can you send a pack of feral Corgis after your opponents or tempt them with persuasive puppy eyes?”

“Pelted Primacy” Limited Edition Playing Cards (Ends: 6/12/2013)
A standard card set featuring anthro characters for the royal cards and jokers, and paw prints for the pip cards.
More of the poster’s work at his DeviantArt gallery.

Terreria Tactics (Ends: 6/24/2013)
A tactical, armies-of-fantasy vs. armies-of-SciFi card game, loaded with anthro dragons and eagles, simulating classic console RPG battles in a tabletop game.
Great illustrations for a card game! Supervising artist is Megillakitty, check her on Furaffinity.

Video Games

BattleTails! (Ends: 6/6/2013)
A live-action strategic defense game: monkeys, tigers, and hooligans fight it out in feudal Japan.
Chibi riding wargs. A strong “Designer toys: the battle game” vibe at work.

Lilly Moon (Ends: 6/15/2013)
RPG/visual novel hybrid featuring a cast of anime-styled werewolf girls and their quest to overthrow Beautiful Red Moon Queen.
Very old-school feel to this game, the graphics of the late 80s console meets the modern supernatural romance.

Beast’s Fury (Ends: 6/18/2013)
An anthro-vs-anthro 2D fighting game, with great-looking characters and bosses!
Someone give me $7500 so the world can finally play a Mexican hairless blogger in a 2D fighter.

Fleish & Cherry in Crazy Hotel (Ends: 7/11/2013)
An isomorphic period adventure game and puzzler set in a 1930s wacky black and white cartoon. Lots of anthro characters and dancing furniture!
It’s a neat role-reversal to have the damsel save her boyfriend, but unfortunately for fox-lovers, you have to play the human :( Maybe there’ll be a fan-mod someday.

Web

Dustbunny Pictures Comics (Ends: 7/17/2013)
A collection of five web comics, including Popiki’s Island, gearing up for an expansion and relaunch.

Adult

Chimera Labs: Realistic firmness sextoys, lubricants (Offbeatr voting period)
Crowdfunding for a startup business with a variety of product, with a goal of artistic, detailed, and reasonably-priced, toys.
I can think of no better description than “lovingly sculpted.” Check the poster’s art and sculpts on FurAffinity. Not, you might imagine, safe for work.

Neko Adventures: Real Cat Girl Porn (Offbeatr voting period)
DVD/web release of cat girls, free from their imprisonment on DeviantArt and sexing it up IRL. Not just for manga anymore.

MANDROID – The Pervy Adult Tamagotchi of Online Hoookups (Offbeatr voting period)
Smartphone app for hookups with some personal safety features and a virtual pet/avatar, theoretically for all genders and orientations but mostly targeting gay men. Not so furry maybe, but aimed at a community reflecting “every race, ethnicity, body type, and species.”
Furstarter does not condone this applet. But we would seriously consider condoning that wolf.

Pocket Pussies: The Legend of Seven Purity Seals (Offbeatr voting period)
Zelda/Pokemon hybrid exploration/battling seizure monsters game, loaded with cheesecake pokemon, cat girls, and assorted anime-esque hotness.

…Meh.

2014 Horsing Around Calendar (Ends: 6/16/2013): 12-month calendar featuring Man In Horse Mask. Isn’t this joke kind of 2009?
Love Me Cat: Puppet Talk Show (Ends: 6/20/2013): A bit “Triumph the Insult Dog,” a bit “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” a bit of voodoo, but ultimately, kind of unappealing.
Super Dog-Man vs. Retirement (Ends: 6/22/2013): Comedy pilot about an aging super hero–Super Dog Man–who tries to go back to work in the real world. I’ll be honest, I’m only including this because of the costume.
JR & Ollie Adventure fun game (Ends: 6/30/2013): A story-driven puzzle/adventure game in a world of anthro characters. Click, look at the cute angry foxes, move on.
Fake Horse (Ends: 7/13/2013): A post-apocalypse graphic novel of a young man in a horse mask, protecting his herd against the monsters of a dark world. A bit too “one artist’s vision,” but worth the ride.

…Causes

Blue Wolf Sanctuary and Village (Ends: 7/6/2013): A sustainable community of simple houses with bed and breakfast, workshop space, etc, and a sanctuary for both wolves and humans.
Preservation of Dingo Records (Ends: 7/7/2013): Campaign to preserve archives of Berenice Walters, “The Dingo Lady,” a body of over 30 years of dingo research and preservation.
The Desert Kit Fox Project (Ends: 7/11/2013): Non-invasive ways to study the desert kit fox in California
Save the African Wild Dog (Ends: 7/11/2013): Working to preserve the Wild Dog–veterninary costs, snare removal, tracking collars, research materials

…Just For Fun

Manos: The Hands of Felt (Ends: 6/3/2013): An all-puppet musical recreation of cult classic “Manos, The Hands of Fate.”
The Magic Ferret (Ends: 6/22/2013): Amazingly, this is Alison’s third ferret movie. “My name is Alison Parker, and I make ferret movies.” – Alison
Snoutie and his Friends (Ends: 7/21/2013): Campaign to translate a cartoon-and-clip-art children’s book from Russian into English. Anthro wooly mammoth, very strange. Count the stolen Disney characters, this one takes Fair Use into a dark alley and uses her ferociously.

…Coming Soon?

Digger: The Omnibus (Pre-launch): An indie B&W graphic novel–one wombat’s journey through a dark subterannean fantasy world, in which there are also lizards and hyenas. Beautiful work!
Come Find Me (Pre-launch): Fox Amoore’s next album, recorded in the “Abbey Road” studio.
The Incredible Hare (Pre-launch): Writer JoeStrike is getting ready to launch his illustrated novel on Kickstarter. One for the rabbit lovers.
Leptailurus’s Tarot (Pre-launch): Leptailurus is preparing to open a KS for a lucious Furry tarot deck. My credit card is waiting.
