Advice for setting up a fursuit lounge at event?

Furry Reddit - Wed 21 Aug 2013 - 06:49

A fair invited us and is offering us space to use on the grounds, an empty 16" truck with padlock to keep our stuff safe while we go out. It will probably be 6-10 fursuiters with bins.

There isn't power... we have to bring some, and fans, lights, and water coolers.

Any advice about how to power this? Best gear like lights? Anything else? Thanks!

Fur The Lifestylers, I'd Like To Share Our Stories.

Furry Reddit - Wed 21 Aug 2013 - 02:06

I've seen a lot of "coming out" posts about Furry on here in the past month or so, and coupled with that I have seen a lot of "Furry is just a hobby!" responses, that often carry themselves too far into putting down anyone who holds Furry so close to their heart that they do feel the need to "come out" and show just how big a part of their life this Fandom is. The are Hobbiests, and there are Lifestylers, and we are both equal in our participation in the Fandom. One is not better than the other, and it is time to stop having this Burned Fur - Freezing Fur discussion after a decade and a half.

I want us to share our stories, as Furry Lifestylers, so that it may become easier to understand just why this Fandom is such an important part of our life that it deserves a "coming out" along with other things which can be summed up as "Furry Pride."

**I feel like I was a Furry from birth. The Furry Lifestyle is one I have participated in since I can remember. In middle school I had many failed attempts of making paper ears and tails. I tried to draw Anthro, almost as instinct, and I knew that I had a special thing for Foxes that no one else understood.

I never had very many friends growing up. The conditions of my family's poverty in such a wealthy area as Orange County did not afford me the luxury of friendship. On top of that, my parents were rather isolated people. My father was a wreck of a "business man" who's living consisted with activities on par with selling things out of the back of a truck. He was also a Vicodin addict for two years. My mother was very sick for most of my childhood, physically and emotionally as well. My father was loud, abrasive, and often violent, especially as I grew up. These things made me shirk friends in the first place. Why would I want to bring one of my wealthy friends home to see my dump of a condo, and then see my "family"?

I guess you could say I retreated into the world of cartoon animals out of a wish to neglect reality, but I counter that with the fact that I just always assumed I was the only one like me. The minute I found this Fandom I was driven to be active in it. And so, Christmas morning, when I was 14, 2006, I got what little my parents could afford me. Books, which, looking back, were the greatest gift, but 14 year old me wanted trinkets, of which my one friend had aplenty. So I went across the street to his home, where his brand new PS2 was sitting waiting, and of course, I wasn't allowed to play it. So I got on his computer and, like a thousand times before, google image searched Foxes. Scrolling through page after page until I came to something I had never seen before anywhere else... but in my mind. Two young Anthro foxes reading a book. I was captivated, so I clicked and got taken to the site. I landed on [Taurin Fox's Website] (www.taurinfox.com) and all of a sudden...I was home in a home I never had. I had just, out of the blue, gotten confirmation of my feelings and learned that one person, at least one person out there was like me. The subject matter didn't even phase me. I had imagined that too a thousand times before and here I was being told by someone 3000 miles away "You are not alone!" And it gave me courage. Then revelation two hit, and for the second time in less than 5 minutes my life changed forever, as I realized...these were males...with other males, and it started dawning on me as well as well that I was not what I had been raised to think I was. I ravished the pages with my eyes and committed to memory the words "Yiff, Scritch, Murr, and Furry Fandom." I knew that, whatever Furries were, I was one of them, and I saved these words like the were burned into the back of my eyes for a time when I had my own computer and could research this on my own. Eventually my friend looked away from the PS2 and realized what was on his computer screen and made me get it off of there. He then proceeded to say how people like that should be killed. I guess those words effected me more than he expected them too, because it has made me one of the loudest, and proudest Furries ever.

I knew that day, at 14, what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and that it would never be the same. I'm glad it never was. Through every trial in my life, every hardship in childhood, every act of irresponsibility of my father, every sickness of my mother, every year without necessities I could cling on knowing that out there there was a Fandom waiting for me, and I would join it beyond the screen. I promised myself that so long as this Fandom continued to open doors for me I would pass that light along to every Furry I meet. It has never stopped opening doors, and it has always given me the courage to overcome any task. Now, at 20, because of my devotion to the lifestyle that chose me, I run a very successful college club, Furry Club, which goes beyond the call and advocated for Furries on campus. I am producer of a play about Furries out of LA. I was able to step out from under my parents, taking evicition as an opportunity, moved in with my aunt, and now after a year have more money in my pocket that most of my fiends, and at 20, this Saturday, will be moving out on my own into a room I have rented in a home by my school and I will never stop being a Furry. Because I honestly believe that because of the existence of this Fandom, with its overwhelming acceptance and compassion, with its strong sense of family for those who have none, and with its fun spirit, I am proud to call myself a Furry Lifestyler.**

Werewolves in the Big Easy

In-Fur-Nation - Tue 20 Aug 2013 - 19:24

We can’t put this any better than they do at Dark Horse: “Cassian Steele is the boss of the werewolf mafia in the Big Easy, and he’s got a problem. The old witch Verona knows his secret and has gone into hiding. Cassian wants her dead. So he sends out the word: An open contract. The first monster to dust Verona gets a big payday. What no one realizes is that Barnabus Black, a demon desperately trying to regain his halo, is her protection.” Kiss Me, Satan! is a new full-color miniseries written by Victor Gischler (Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Spike—A Dark Place) and illustrated by Juan Ferreyra (Colder). Find out a lot more at Comic Book Resources. Then look for the premier this September.

My "friend" called me a furfag and said i must like fucking animals if im a furry..

Furry Reddit - Tue 20 Aug 2013 - 13:51

So.. Long story short i was with my girlfriend at my roommates house (friend of 11 years). The topic of furries came up. My friend went on a rant about how all furries are sick and that it's gross to fuck animals. I told her i was a furry and she gave me this insane look. "Well you dont fuck animals do you?" I said no and tried to explain to her that bestiality and being a furry were two different things. She stopped me mid sentence and said "Well you must not be a furry if you dont fuck animals." We had been arguing for 20 minutes to no avail. I pretty much just gave up at that point and went for a walk with my girl. She was apalled that my friend wouldnt even listen to reason. I told my girlfriend a few weeks after we started dating. She at least CARED enough to want to understand and listen. She had the same pre-concieved notions as everyone else. "Oh jeez she fucks animals. Does she want me to dress up during sex? Ew gross you love animals." She listened to me though. She WANTED to understand. She does now. I just wish a person i've known for 11 years would care more about me than a girl i've known for 6 months. (dating for 2 years now.) I guess she never was a good friend to begin with. All i'm going to say to you guys is dont take that shit from anyone. Kindly try to explain. If they dont want to hear it, leave them in their ignorance. (:

Where Is the Fandom Going?

Ask Papabear - Tue 20 Aug 2013 - 12:13
Dear Papabear,

I'm wondering what, in your opinion, is in store for the future of furries as it is going right now. Will there be less hate and more members or the other way around? Parts of the world seem to be going in a direction that may benefit us and others not so much.

Staemwulf

* * *

Hi, Staemwulf,

An interesting question. I don’t think anyfur really knows, but I can offer my speculations about the future of the fandom based on what has been happening over the last years.

To gain perspective on where we are going, it might be good to understand first where we have been. I’ve always felt this was a pretty good summary of furry history: http://www.furrydolphin.net/2009_files/furry-history.html

As you can see from that article, derpiness and nasty arguments in the fandom are not something that is exactly new. Whenever you have more than one person involved in anything, you are going to have disagreements. In the fandom, it has been stuff like “Who is a real furry and who isn’t?” As you can see from the above, one of those issues was the whole furry “lifestyler” issue. Today, it is things like “Are Bronies furries?” and the stupid “popufur” nonsense. Such arguments will always be with us, and likely will increase as the fandom grows.

That growth in participation is definitely having an effect on the fandom. According to one graph I saw posted on the Furry Fandom Infocenter at http://www.furryfandom.info/conventions.htm attendance at furcons has grown from about 5,000 a year in 1990 to about 25,000 in 2011. This is not only because attendance at existing cons is rising, but also because new cons are opening their doors every year. Some of the more recent ones include The Biggest Little Furcon (Reno), Arizona Furcon (Scottsdale), Indyfurcon, Fur the ‘More (Baltimore), and Unthrocon (Salt Lake City).

As the fandom has grown exponentially, so has its diversity. There are more older “greymuzzles” than ever before, both because older people are starting to join in on the fun and because young furs are staying in the fandom long enough to be categorized as greymuzzles. I feel that’s a good thing because it should lend some maturity and experience to the furry gene pool. I think we are also seeing more women join in, and we will see more furries in Europe, Japan, Central and South America, and other parts of the world. Again, the more furries there are, the stronger we can be, but also we will need to be careful about the inevitable increase in arguments between different parts of the fandom, as well as between furries and mundanes.

From what I’ve seen in the last 10 years or so, I think that the media is getting a bit better in portraying furries fairly. Also, some furries have been grabbing cameras and shooting documentaries and other informational videos. However, there is still a huge stigma out there. I see it all the time with furries writing to me saying their parents won’t let them be furry because they think we’re all furverts.

What is needed now—and I know I’ve mentioned this before in my column—is a way to communicate better, both between furries in the fandom and between furries and the outside world. This is a big reason for the creation of the American Furry Association (www.americanfurryassociaiton.org), which is still in the organizational stages, but we hope to be up and running by the end of the year, early 2014 at the latest. Right now, there is a TON of furry stuff on the Web and elsewhere. Sometimes it is hard to find and people are not aware of the many resources at their disposal, so the AFA will help organize that information and get it out to people, furries and mundanes alike. The more we talk and communicate, the better informed we will be and the better able to dispel misinformation and mitigate unnecessary conflicts.

No one can accurately predict where the fandom is going, other than to say it looks like we will continue to grow for some time to come. Hopefully, we can do this without too many growing pains. Hopefully, too, stereotypes and false information about the fandom will decrease as we become harder and harder for mundanes to avoid and deny simply because we will be everywhere :-)

Hugs,

Papabear
