Here is a teaser for the upcoming documentary by Tyler Purcell [1]! "This is the final teaser trailer for an all new feature-length movie entitled "Beyond the Mask" about artists within the furry fandom and their daily struggle to make ends meet. The story revolves around 6 individuals with different passions within the artistic community. This teaser is one of our stars Allison Weir from Portland Oregon. FWG Blog – February 2019

Furry Writers' Guild - Wed 6 Feb 2019 - 11:05

It’s February! This may be the shortest month of the year, but with the lack of a blog post last month, this certainly won’t be our shortest post of the year!

Guild Newsroom

We will be re-restarting out Member Spotlights starting on February 15th, where we will be featuring our own Mary E. Lowd! Look forward to that coming soon, as well as other spotlights coming at the end of February and middle of March.

Attention, all members on Twitter! When making posts about your writing, be sure to use the hashtag #furrywriting so that we can keep up with your work and share it with the world!

Member Highlights

Some highlights from last month, as featured from our FWG Member News section on the forums:

  • Huskyteer and Kyell Gold co-authored a story called “Chasing Her Story” in the conbook for this past Midwest FurFest. If you have a copy, make sure you check it out!
  • Madison Keller had a story featured in the recently-released “Slashers” anthology by Thurston Howl Publications. They also had a story accepted to “The Furry Cookbook” (also by THP), a rom-com called “Bucking the Trend”.
  • Joel Kreissman had a story called “Ancient Infections” accepted into THP’s “Purrgatorio” anthology.
  • JFR Coates‘s anthology “Furry Trash” was released from Rabbit Valley just in time for the close of 2018.
  • S. Park released their first short erotica under pen name “A. Rhiannon”. You can find it on Amazon or Smashwords.
  • Mary E. Lowd, along with being our next Member Spotlight, had a short story, “The Otter’s Mermaid”, come out in “Furry Trash”. She also had two short stories released in “Empyreome”, entitled “The Ugly Sapling” and “Katelynn and the Hummingbird“.
  • Frances Pauli‘s newest “Hybrid Nation” short story has been released on Amazon. They also have a story entitled “Big Bird” in the recently-released “Jackal Who Came in From the Cold“.
  • Alison Cybe has a handful of updates for us this month! They have a short story collection called “Sovereigns” that will be released later this year from Blue Rose (https://blueroserpg.com/). Their short story “The Greatest Steak” was accepted into THP’s “The Furry Cookbook”. They have completed the first draft of their cyberpunk series “Cybera – An Erotic Cyberpunk Thriller”, all the chapters of which are available on their FurAffinity page. They’ve begun to post their out-of-print stories to their website. The latest book of their “Tales of Monsterotica” series, called “The Drag Queen of the Opera“, has been released, while the first book of that series, “The Castle of Count Shagula”, is available in audiobook format.

Our usual reminder to all our member that have had something exciting happen in the past month not featured here: be sure to keep up with you Member News thread on the forums! Not only is this how we get our information, but these threads are able to be viewed by any person logged into the forums. Share your achievements with the rest of the writing community!

Special Events and Announcements

Jess E. Owen will be a Guest of Honor at the upcoming Texas Furry Fiesta! She’ll be signing books and participating in writing panels. She’s well-versed in the art of self-publishing, so this would be a great chance to learn!

It’s award nomination season! The Leo Awards just wrapped up nominations. You have until February 16th, 2019 to nominate for the Ursa Major Awards, and until March 15th, 2019 to nominate for the Coyotl Awards. If you’re eligible to nominate, go do so!

Wrap-up

Our forums are open to all writers, not just full members of the FWG. Check them out here and join in on the conversation. While you’re there, check out how to join our Slack and Telegram channels. Before joining any of these, though, we ask that you please read up on our Code of Conduct! With all the negative going around in the world these days, both furry and non-furry, we want to make sure the guild feels like a safe place to all its participants, free of threats and hate speech.

We have two weekly chats, called our Coffeehouse Chats! Our first one is Tuesday at 7:00pm EST in our Slack channel, and our other is Thursdays at Noon EST on our forums in the shoutbox on the main page. Both of these chats feature writers talking about writing, usually with a central topic. As with the above, these chats are open to both members and non-members, though you must be registered for the forums.

The World of the False Dawn

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 6 Feb 2019 - 02:41

Also at Further Confusion we learned about Shard, a fantasy role-playing game with a considerably anthropomorphic bent. The creators, Shard Studios out of Austin, Texas, we running several games to introduce new players to the system. Here’s what they have to say on their home page for the game: “Shard Studios invites you to enter the fantastic world of Dardunah, the vast shard of a shattered realm, as presented in the colorful pages of the Shard RPG! Many years in the making, this system allows players to choose from a wide variety of animal people who are the main cast of the many adventures this otherworldly setting offers. Skyships glide through shimmering clouds past majestic crystal peaks. Giant insects prowl alien jungles or lurk in the sparkling emerald seas. Warriors with blades of diamond and amber duel across crimson sands. And mystics chant in shadowy chambers as their spirits wander abroad.” There are several books of game play and background available now.

The Annie Award Winners for 2018

In-Fur-Nation - Mon 4 Feb 2019 - 02:57

Your humble ed-otter and his mate got a chance to attend the Annie Awards at UCLA’s Royce Hall recently. Presented annually by ASIFA-Hollywood, the Annie Awards are considered by many to be the Oscars for animation, voted on by folks who work in the industry. And once again, there was plenty of anthropomorphic content to be found among the winners. By far, the big winner of the evening was Sony Pictures’ Spider Man: Into The Spiderverse. The surprise hit from last December not only won the coveted Best Animated Feature trophy, but also took home the Feature awards for Directing, Writing, Character Animation, Character Design, Production Design, and Editing — winning all seven categories in which it was nominated. (Go, Spider-Ham!). Ralph Breaks The Internet had to settle for only one award in Feature Effects Animation, while the 2D animated sequence in Mary Poppins Returns got the awards for Animated Special Production and Character Animation In A Live Action Feature. Also taking home one award was Wes Anderson’s Isle Of Dogs, which got the award in Feature Voice Acting for Bryan Cranston’s performance as Chief. Over on the TV/Broadcast side of things, the big winners were Hilda from Netflix (taking home awards for Best TV Series For Children, Writing, and Character Animation) and Disney’s Mickey Mouse (with trophies for Music, Storyboarding — tied with Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — and Directing). In TV Character Design, the Annie went to a very anthropomorphic episode of Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure called “Freebird”. Bojack Horseman did well, winning for TV Voice acting (Will Arnett as Bojack) and Best TV Production overall. Dreamworks’ Tales of Arcadia: Trollhunters won the trophy for Best TV Effects Animation. The award for Best Commercial went to “There’s a Rang-Tan in My Bedroom” (produced for Greenpeace), and the first winner of the brand new Best Virtual Reality award was Crow: The Legend (which we’ve talked about before!). Finally, the Ub Iwerks Award for technical achievement went to the developers of the open source software known as Blender, which of course many furry creators have also used extensively. To see all the winners visit the Annie Awards web site — and remember, nominations for the Ursa Major Awards close on February 16th!

Nikki from Dave!

In-Fur-Nation - Sat 2 Feb 2019 - 16:45

Nikki M is an illustrator we met at Further Confusion this year. Here’s what she has to say about herself: “My name is Nichole (you can call me Nikki!) and I am an illustrator/general artist based in Los Angeles CA. I graduated in 2015 from The Dave School, with experience in 3D and visual effects. My focus and passion lies in design, illustration and digital painting. Working with colors and seeing a character come to life before my eyes is what brings me pure joy. I currently am working as a freelance artist, and am open to take on any challenge that’s thrown my way!” Check out her Gallery, and keep an eye on her web site — she’ll have a Storenvy store set up soon to sell prints, pins, and other art stuff.

In a Great Big Monster’s Garden… in the Shade

In-Fur-Nation - Thu 31 Jan 2019 - 01:24

The artist known as AshG is an active-duty member of the U.S. Navy, often deployed on ships at sea. But somehow she still finds the time and energy to create Monster’s Garden, a full-color on-line comic. It tells the story of Kilo Monster, a championship fighter (and reptile) who is thrown out of his homeland.  Now he lives his life for the protection of his friends (human and otherwise) and the peace of his home garden. The official web site includes a link to AshG’s Society6 store of art prints and other items.

Meet the Judges!

Furry Book Review - Tue 29 Jan 2019 - 16:15
Patrick "Bahu" Rochefort is a technical writer, editor, novelist, and judge for the Best Anthropomorphic Artwork Awards. He lives in the prairies of Canada. His recent furry genre works include "The Years of Living Dangerously Happy" in Hot Dish #2, "Plow Mare" in Will of the Alpha #3, "After the Last Bell's Rung" and "Eight Seconds and the Grace of God" in Claw the Way to Victory, and "Prospero" in Abandoned Places.Look for his presentation "This Year in Furry Books", presented at Fur-Eh! and online at https://bit.ly/2J4ptriAs an avid reader, writer, and advocate of the furry genre since 1996, he's excited to join the ranks of furry book reviewers, to elevate the exceptional and champion the best of our genre.Donald Jacob Uitvlugt lives on neither coast of the United States, but mostly in a haunted memory palace of his own design. Over five dozen of his short stories have appeared in print and online, as well as microfiction, essays, reviews, and the occasional poem. Perhaps a quarter of his stories have also been produced in audio format. He has published furry stories in both fandom and non-fandom venues, including “Outliers” in 2017’s Bleak Horizons and “In the Sands of Rubal-Khali,” appearing in 2018 on the podcast StarShip Sofa. While he can often be found prowling the science fiction and fantasy section of bookstores and libraries, his reading tastes are voracious and eclectic—including biography, history, science, religion, poetry, and manga. He especially appreciates well-executed adaptations of folklore from around the world, as well as authorial voices that are perfectly matched to the stories they tell. This is his first time as a Leo Awards judge.Scott Hughes received a BA in English and Creative Writing from Mercer University and an MFA in Creative Writing from Georgia College & State University. His fiction, poetry, and essays have appeared in such publications as Crazyhorse, One Sentence Poems, Deep Magic, Redheaded Stepchild, Entropy, and Strange Horizons. He is the Division Head of English at Central Georgia Technical College, and his short story collection, The Last Book You’ll Ever Read, is forthcoming from Weasel Press in 2019. For more information, visit writescott.com.I am excited to participate as a judge in the Leo Literary Awards because I have some knowledge of the furry community, mainly through documentaries (some made by furries themselves, some not), but I must confess I have never read any furry literature. Approaching this as a non-furry, I’m eager to delve into what must be fascinating stories and to be drawn into a new world that I have so far only viewed from the outside.Stanley Jenkins is the author of A City on a Hill: An Indirect Memoir (Outpost19, 2013) and Down the Plymouth Road: An Indirect Spiritual Autobiography (Thurston Howl Publications, 2018). His story “George” was published in The Best Creative Nonfiction, Vol. 2 (Norton, 2008).
