Bunnies Who Are Bent

In-Fur-Nation - Sun 6 Jan 2019 - 01:33

We came across this new 6-issue comic mini-series at a bookstore! “Auntie Agatha’s Home for Wayward Rabbits is in danger. Run by the titular Agatha and her niece, Julie, this peculiar shelter cares for damaged and dysfunctional rabbits — and now it’s being threatened by a wealthy businessman who will stop at nothing to tear it down.” Auntie Agatha’s Home for Wayward Rabbits is also the latest comic series from famed writer Keith Giffen, helped out by artist Benjamin Roman. It’s available now from Image Comics.

Variations on a Dragon (1967)

Furry.Today - Fri 4 Jan 2019 - 16:27

Note: There are subtitles if you turn CC on, There doesn't appear to be a way to force it. The Hungarian Institute of Film Science has recently posted a bunch of older animated shorts newly remasterd and I thought I would share one while they are still available. I present to you the very silly Variations on a Dragon. "Seven variations on the traditional story of fairy tales when the dragon kidnaps the royal - but this time, things are not formed according to the paper form." UPDATE: They took the film down so I updated this with another location. If they ever turn the video back on here is the original location: https://vimeo.com/305753980 Also a translation: Ladies and gentlemen, who wouldn't remember that once upon a time there was a beautiful princess. And one day the evil dragon kidnapped the princess. Of course we all remember... And the noble-hearted knight... came, saw, and won. He took the beautiful princess home, their wedding banquet was a festive event famed across the empire, and they lived happily hereafter. That is how the fable ends. But is that the only way the fable could be told? What if this is not the way it ended? Let us try a couple of new versions. VARIATIONS ON A DRAGON 1. Stark Reality 2. Sports Passion Hello... 3. Unexpected 4. A True Friend 5. The Two Scallybag Arthur, please... The horse is soaking. 6. The Weaker Sex 7. Help..! I won! The End

Oh My Darlin’ Space Patrol

In-Fur-Nation - Fri 4 Jan 2019 - 02:01

Whoa, don’t give up on 2018 just yet!  Take a look at some things we missed… Back around Halloween (!) DC Comics continued their mightily-odd hook up with classic Hanna-Barbera characters in new comic book settings. How so? How about the Green Lantern / Huckleberry Hound Special? Yes. “Returning from recent duty in Vietnam, veteran Marine John Stewart — now a member of the Green Lantern Corps — contemplates what, if anything, he should do about the issues tearing his country apart. Meanwhile, Huckleberry’s comments against the Vietnam war have left him a celebrity outcast, and a visit back home to Mississippi puts him face to face with the Civil Rights Movement. What can one man — and one hound — do? Plus, part two of a Secret Squirrel backup story written by J.M. DeMatteis.” Got all that? Check out the web site if you don’t believe us. The main story is by Mark Russell and Rick Leonardi. Not weird enough for you? How about the Deathstroke / Yogi Bear Special, the Nightwing / Magilla Gorilla Special, or the Superman / Top Cat Special? We kid you not.

Animal Behaviour

Furry.Today - Thu 3 Jan 2019 - 14:28

Here's a National Film-board of Canada short that's currently nominated for an Oscar this year. "Dealing with what comes naturally isn’t easy, especially for animals. In Animal Behaviour, the latest animated short from the Oscar®-winning team of Alison Snowden and David Fine (Bob’s Birthday), five animals meet regularly to discuss their inner angst in a group therapy session led by Dr. Clement, a canine psychotherapist. The group includes Lorraine, a leech who suffers from separation anxiety; Cheryl, a praying mantis who can’t seem to keep a man; Todd, a pig with an eating disorder; Jeffrey, a bird with guilt issues; and Linda, an obsessive-compulsive cat."

After the Squirrel, a Moose. Get it?

In-Fur-Nation - Tue 1 Jan 2019 - 02:21

Earlier this year we told you about a squirrel named Taco, and a book about him written by Andrew Cangelose and illustrated by Josh Shipley. Well now that same team is back with a new hardcover book, this time following Taco’s friend named Whoopsie — in, you guessed it, This Is a Whoopsie! “This is supposed to be a book about all the different things moose can do, like leaping and jumping and being really tall. But maybe Whoopsie isn’t the right moose for the job. You might want to pick a different moose for this book. Maybe instead we can do a book about falling down a lot? Yeah! Whoopsie would be great at that. From the creators of This Is a Taco! comes the hilarious tale of a clumsy moose who shows how sometimes being a little different can make one great story.” It’s available now from Cubhouse, Lion Forge’s imprint for beginning readers. [And with that, we wish you all a happy, safe, and Furry New Year! — ye ed-0tter]

A Furry Wedding

Furry.Today - Mon 31 Dec 2018 - 16:26

Lets end off 2018 with a wonderful short film by Tyler Purcell of a furry wedding shot on super 16mm film. Man, All that nice film grain. "As part of my documentary about artists in the Furry Fandom, two of our lead characters were getting married at convention in Seattle. Off we went to not only capture the convention, but also the wedding as part of my new documentary. #furrydoc Shot on my Aaton XTR Prod with Zeiss 12-120 zoom, 9.5mm Optar and 24mm Rokinon Xeen. Most of the film was shot with a Tiffen Steadicam A30, which worked well, but difficult to balance for the camera in a full build. Film processed and prepped for telecine at Fotokem. The transfer was done on a Spirit 2k datacine with a flat transfer. Converted the DPX files to Pro Res 4444 in DaVinci with a base pass. Then that file was used for the edit since the DPX files don't playback in real time well. The final output is a 2048x1152 (16x9) Pro Res HQ file with a slight zoom on all the clips to fill the 1.75:1 aspect ratio output format so there are no black bars on the side. That exact file was then uploaded to Vimeo."

Junk… In… Space!

In-Fur-Nation - Mon 31 Dec 2018 - 02:58

Lion Forge Comics have launched their new Caracal imprint for younger readers with Quantum Mechanics, an all-alien themed graphic novel written and illustrated by Jeff Weigel. “On a nowhere asteroid on the far rim of the galaxy, two young alien girls-Rox and Zam-spend their days tearing apart and repairing clunkers in a spaceship junkyard. These aspiring gearheads yearn for the chance to test their skills on something besides rusted old rockets and broken-down planet-hoppers. Their big chance finally comes when the captain of a mysterious ship called the Quasar Torrent enlists the kids for some repair work. But what initially looks like a golden opportunity quickly becomes a nightmare when the young friends find they’ve been kidnapped by what turns out to be a band of space pirates! Rox and Zam find themselves swept up in the astro-bucaneers’ vendetta against a huge intergalactic corporation that’s forced this motley band of working stiffs from across space into a life of crime. Now the girls must chose: Do they want the comforts of home and family, or the glamorous adventure of a lifetime-to be part of a crew of colorful misfits intent on plunder, revenge, and excitement? Their lives, friendship . . . and maybe even the fate of a galaxy . . . hangs in the balance!” Comicosity has an in-depth review.

What Are YOU Doing This Weekend?

In-Fur-Nation - Sun 30 Dec 2018 - 02:56

If you grew up between the 1960’s and the 1990’s, we know where you were on Saturday mornings: Seated right in front of the television, catching up with your favorite animated and fantasy TV series. Now four whole decades of weekend TV pleasures are chronicled in It’s Saturday Morning! A Look Back at Four Decades of Animation, Pop Culture, and Tradition (whew!). It’s a new hardcover book written by Joe Garner and Michael Ashley. “With concept art, archival images, all-new interviews, and a foreword by Bobby’s World creator and funnyman Howie Mandel, It’s Saturday Morning! celebrates the shows, characters, songs, and commercials that made Saturday mornings a pop culture event—decade by decade… Broadcasting into family living rooms from the 1960’s to the 1990’s, this wildly creative art form wrought a beloved rite of passage. From the hours of 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., parents could sleep in while their children plopped on the couch to consume cartoons galore. From The Bugs Bunny Show, The Jetsons, and Jonny Quest to The Smurfs, He-Man, and Animaniacs, this window of time promised pure entertainment and an experience that united generations… This entertaining walk down memory lane is made complete by a review of some of the iconic products advertised between these favorite cartoons. ‘After These Messages…’ segments provide fascinating facts about the merchandise that appeared in Saturday morning commercials, such as the Slinky, Lite-Brite, Cabbage Patch Kids, and Golden Crisp cereal.” Yum! Needless to say there are lots of furry-themed shows discussed in these pages. It’s Saturday Morning! is available now from Becker & Meyer.
