She's Afraid of Losing Her BF If His Dad Kicks Him Out of the House

Ask Papabear - Thu 27 Feb 2014 - 13:58
Hey Papabear

I'm having troubles with my boyfriend at the moment. He is getting kicked out of home at the end of the month and he doesn't seem to care and if he gets kicked out of home I will not be able to see him any more. I can not leave him because I truly love him. What should I do?

He's being kicked outta home because he hasn't been able to get a job for 2 years and his dad's sick of it.... We have been together for 3 years in June. He lives half an hour’s drive from me and we have a rocky relationship but we always seem to get through stuff

Luffles from Misty (age 17)

* * *

Hi, Misty,

I’m curious why you would want to be with someone with whom you have a “rocky relationship” and who doesn’t care if he gets kicked out of his house even if that means that, for some reason, he won’t be able to see you anymore. My bear instincts are kicking in here. Is it because you don’t think you can do better? I believe the problem—at least, your problem—isn’t that your apathetic boyfriend will soon be on the streets but that you have such low self-esteem that you would want to be with him in the first place. I could be wrong, but what do you think?

One thing that I’ve learned in life is that you can’t help people who don’t want to be helped. Why is it your job to get him on track? It’s his job. You, as girlfriend, can be there to be loving and supportive in his efforts, but if he’s making no effort, then there’s nothing for you to be supportive of.

You’re 17 and I’m assuming your boyfriend is about the same age (although maybe a few years older since he’s not in school and has been unemployed for 2 years?) If he is not going to school, and he is able-bodied, he needs to get a job, even if it is just part time. One thing about companies is that if you are a young man or woman and willing to work hard for minimum wage, you can probably get some sort of work. I know that doesn't sound great, but it's better than nothing. You have to start somewhere, after all. I’m thinking his father would not have kicked him out if he thought his son were making an effort to do something with himself and that the reason for his frustration is his son isn’t trying. (Again, reading between the lines here).

This might sound like I am unsympathetic to your feelings of love, but I do understand that love has no reason. We often love people who are not really great for us, and we stick by them no matter what. You do not have to “leave” your boyfriend. Tell him you are here for him to give him whatever love and support you can, but it is up to him to take you up on that offer. Let him make the next move.

Good luck,

Papabear

[Discussion]Let's talk t-shirts!

Furry Reddit - Thu 27 Feb 2014 - 10:32

So mayyyybe if you were on yesterday you caught the link I posted to a t-shirt store similar to redbubble I posted, overexcitedly. Maybe not, because I deleted it. Preview images are all gross and wonky, blech. But I arrived at the conclusion when doodling more designs that... I have absolutely no idea what other people like. Whoops. So I figured I should just, you know. Ask!

I also thought it might be a fun discussion topic! Let's talk about furry casual wear!

  1. Do you wear furry t-shirts/hoodies/clothes/etc?? why or why not?

  2. What kinds do you wear? Do you wear graphic tees? Or maybe those awesome hoodies with ears and tails on them?

  3. What kind of shirts do YOU like? Funny ones, cute ones, ones with killer art?

I myself have to many shirts already. >~> I love-love-love those animal hoodies though. Ooh, and I'm an artist, so I personally lean towards really really pretty art over anything else.

//edit

I ran over to our printers and turns out I can print up to 15inches wide by 20 inches tall. And I can print on the back of shirts! So i think I'm gonna make some shirts with like, animal tails or wings on the back, tails obviously going up and wings obviously folded. What kind of tails do you think are good ideas? Def cat, fox, wolf, red panda.... feathered wings and dragon wings... hmmmm???

Connie Sun’s comics explore projections we place on animals

Fursday - Reading List - Thu 27 Feb 2014 - 04:00

There are different ways to think about animals. One way is to imagine them totally separate, not attaching to us, ever. "They are not brethren," wrote the great naturalist Henry Beston, "they are not underlings. They are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time." Animals and people, Beston thought, live in their own worlds while sharing the same streets, meadows, skies, homes. We mingle, but the gap between us is not crossable.

Or, if you like, you can think of animals as pretend friends. You can tiptoe closer in, knowing full well they are not us, but still talk to them, share with them, give them a hug because (whatever is really going on) it feels good.

We have a long fascination and relationship with animals. We constantly project ourselves onto animals, all the while knowing deep down they not us. The article also features some thoughtful inner identity and coming of age comics by Connie Sun.

What happened to the last of 3 animals

Fursday - Reading List - Thu 27 Feb 2014 - 04:00

Despite human activity still driving animals to extinction, it feels like our ancestors were more callous in their attitudes towards conservation. Take for example the story of the last thylacine; commonly known as the Tasmanian tigers for its distinctive stripes running across its lower spine and for its last remaining habitat being the island of Tasmania. Humanity is not solely to blame for their demise; the population was already on the wane by the time the British settled on the Australian continent, but they contributed their part through government sponsored culling.

What is thought to be the last thylacine was captured in 1933. Robert Krulwich writes:

Benjamin (that's what "he" was called; his sex is still being debated) spent his final days in the Hobart zoo in a wire-topped cage, exposed to the weather, protected by a solitary tree that was not yet in leaf. It was early spring in Australia, and the weather very changeable, writes MacKinnon: "[N]ighttime temperatures dropped below freezing and soared as high as 108 degrees Fahrenheit by day. One witness reported hearing the [tiger's] ululating cry of distress. It died in the night on Sept. 7, 1936."

And the body? This time, this Last One was not preserved. Benjamin's corpse, says MacKinnon, "was apparently thrown away."

An undignified end.

Webcomics: It Came from Patreon

FurStarter - Wed 26 Feb 2014 - 22:22

Illustration by Not-Fun, whose webcomic “Inhuman” is currently crowdfunding on Patreon.Thank you, Icarus!!

Greetings from Patreon! Land of trickle-funding and micropayments, where full digital art spreads bring in $3 and pony videos $550…if you have a nice British accent.

Joking aside, Patreon is proving to be a go-to source for content providers, a low-key and low-pressure fundraising tool for artists, who as a category seem to err on the side of low key and low pressure–fundraising without stress (and, frequently, without any sort of campaign, but let’s not go there just now.) It’s a good home for webcomics in particular, where ongoing plots and slow-growing fan bases can turn into a gentle stream of pennies. Here’s a few recent gems.

Patreon-InhumanInhuman by Icarus/Not-Fun
Patreon
It’s about aliens and schizophrenics. You should read it!” – Not-fun

Icarus’s “Inhuman” is an elegant sci-fi world, a slow-building story in the distant future, with expressive humans and a wide range of aliens (the four-legged polar bear taur-esque Nikitak may be some sort of Progenitor experiment in weaponized cute). Patreon-Inhuman-CatIt’s been running for over a decade now, rolling out a tale of exploration and identity against the backdrop of a powerful religious state spreading its tendrils across the planets. It’s a mature and thoughtful web series, and while it’s thick with damnably adorable critters, Inhuman is, at heart, a story of what it means to be human.

Patreon
“…science fiction with both humor and horror, drama and adventure, and romance and redshirts getting eaten by space monsters.” – NixieSeal

On the other end of the “whimsical sci-fi romp” continuum, Anthronauts, a weeklyish webcomic, a bit sci-fi and a bit space-fantasy running a bit over a year, is a silly, Anime-inspired romp through furryspace, I’m still working my way through the series, but we’ve come across a few characters, somewhat “stock” but well-used–the bishonen unicorn captain (or space knight?), anthronuats2bookish and dedicated scientist. Unfortunately flipping through the comic is a bit of a trick, the web interface is just a bit buggy, but NixieSeal’s world is cheerfully perverse.

Page one: “Father, you look unwell. As much as I enjoy slicing your limbs off, I’m starting to worry about your health.” It gets weirder from there.

poppyiconPoppy O’Possum by Morbi
Patreon
“.It’s a goofy fantasy story about a single mother with super strength and big thighs. Yep.” – Morbi

Interesting, I thought “Poppy” was a down-to-earth story about a swamp possum trying to survive the challenges of being a single mom and living, well, in a swamp. As it turns out, there’s a little bit of sci-fi in this one too, since Poppy’s on another planet, “Flora,” which is a bit of a hellhole (though the Fenneclands there sound supercute.) There’s touches of magic and fantasy in the series, but it’s still, at heart, a mom and her daughter against the world. morbiYeah, it’s a world with perverse and dotty cat-nuns and such. I do like the way the fantastic elements take a back seat to character development and loving mayhem. They’re there, lurking in the background–and Poppy herself seems to be the only nonmagical character in the series, with a certain increased mortality because of it. She’s an outsider, a charming brute in a somewhat fussier world, maybe a little more at home wrestling an alligator than dealing with tea and fine dresses, but Poppy’s a winning character throughout.
