Five Fur Affinity staff resign, some citing leadership failures

Five members of Fur Affinity staff announced their resignation yesterday:

All but Wolfe were brought from Furocity and placed directly into administration positions. Grammatist cited privacy concerns as the reason for his resignation; three others directed criticism towards the original FA staff members, and slammed Dragoneer for poor leadership.

In his detailed resignation notice, Photographurer claims:

The site owners repeatedly gave all administrators, old and new, an Administrator Code Of Conduct, which stated that we were to only handle tickets that pertained to our departments (so that rulings could be made by people who understood the intricacies of the art form), as well as how to act professionally.

From day-one, some of the original FA administrators have blatantly ignored the Admin Code Of Conduct, repeatedly handling trouble tickets outside of their departments (after countless warnings from owners, and while their own departments’ Terms Of Service tickets go unresolved), undermined and overturned Department Heads’ rulings, shown gross ignorance towards the AUP, spread false information about the AUP and site policies, botched countless trouble ticket rulings, acted unprofessionally, leaked private site information, and have intentionally hampered the ticket/administration process at every turn (we have found proof of this from chat logs, notes, and trouble tickets). Their actions have been childish, petty, and detrimental to the site and its users.

The original site owner has known about this gross misconduct, but no action has been taken and nothing has improved. We found evidence in trouble tickets, chat logs, and notes that some of the FA admins were intentionally leaking private information, ignoring site policy, and trying to sabotage the administrative process. The original site owner (Dragoneer) has not effectively reprimanded or fired ANY of the offending admins under his leadership. Every gross violation and problem is met with weak excuses, indifference, and endless second chances. There is no leadership or follow-through.

People with little or no administrative experience, who know nothing about photography, are striving to alter the AUP and destroy the works of fellow photographers and the art form I love.

I’ve seen FA from behind the scenes. The administrative foundation of FA is badly broken, and the site owners seem unwilling or unable to make the tough decisions that will better serve the site and its users. These issues have made it impossible for me to perform my duties and serve FA’s users in a way that I feel is effective and beneficial. Therefore I am stepping down as an administrator.

Luftwood and WriterWren had similar complaints about the site's original staff:

At all times I have tried to honestly improve your user experience but with the weak, unprofessional, childish original staff this proved to be to great a challenge. Being met with endless bickering and bullshit a simple job of helping users on an community art website is impossible.

My services here are not wanted nor appreciated by the previous admin staff. And security issues have arisen for which Dragoneer has no care about, regardless of what innocent people it affects.

One of the remaining admins, Summercat, has made a journal addressing the privacy concerns, and commented on the other allegations:

Personally, I feel the assertions made are unfair (at the very least), and only show one viewpoint of a situation.

Dragoneer has not yet made an official comment on the situation as he was unaware of it until recently and is trying to learn more. He said:

Somebody decided to "dox" the admins, and posted their findings last night in a release. Some of the Furocity admins didn't take too well to that, and outright left over the doxing in and of itself. I can't comment on the other issues, because as of right now both myself and Daemonshyai have been blindsided by it.

I'm trying to find out more about the details right now, and what they're claiming. [...] All I know is that one of the admins who left last night came into admin chat concerned about the "dox", and everybody left all at once (pretty much within an hour).

Meanwhile, Arshes Nei suggested part of the problem lay with an unwilliness on the part of Furocity staff to integrate with the others:

I don't really know the other admins because I don't think they made an effort to know/understand the rest of the staff and I tried to get them to...I bear no hate but it was frustrating to say the last.

The merger between Furocity and Furaffinity was intended to bring in new admins to the understaffed furry site. Four months on there was no sign of the desired changes and during that period FA also suffered from a DDOS attack, controversial addition of Viglink and a temporary read only period. The read-only period was criticised for being entered into with no user warning, although staff had been aware it was necessary for at least a week as they prepared for it.

I'm sure the leaking of said dox was not done by a furry who was "concerned about security" and good with technological devises, and done in a manner that they were the very evil they sought to defend against. You know, like when that nutjob in Norway killed sixty nine people to prove to Norway that they weren't ready for some other nutjob to do what he was in effect doing.

But why the hell do they keep the DOX for the admins on FA anyway? I mean, why not keep that information off a site with past security issues?

Normally, I try not to comment here on FA issues; I am, admittedly, very biased.

In this case, I decide to make an exception. The 'doxing' was done haphazardly, using Google and DNS/Hostname lookup tools. Further, a lot of information in said documents was just plain incorrect. In *my* case, an address I haven't lived at for a year, missing a few sites I run, and my publicly posted phone number. Some admins even had incorrect names listed.

In this situation, there was *no* security breach on FA's part. There is no basis in any claim of such for this, at all. None, zilch, zip, nada. All the information gathered there is nothing that spending time to extract from Google wouldn't show.

The other complaints can be argued. I, obviously, feel differently than the former admins on the issues they've brought up (especially the accusation of being lazy). In the end, though, any information on any admin posted in said dox did not come from private FA data.

If that's the case if they didn't want their Dox getting out then I think it's silly they'd put it online in any regard. Certainly if they were going to become FA staff, they should have expected problems from the technologically satanic groups such as lulz who believe in the virtue of anonymity until it's someone they don't like.

The fact that they didn't, and if that's the reason for them leaving? They shouldn't even been in to begin with.

I think you need to find a hobby that isn't getting mad about every small thing furaffinity does

I would agree and disagree. Am I surprised at who the author was? Not really.

However, losing multiple staff member which was part of a heavily publicized resource alliance is probably pretty news worthy.

I'm not getting mad about things Furaffinity does, I'm trying to make the site improve. In any case this is hardly a small thing. The simultaneous resignation of five admins on the largest furry site seems to me to be the sort of thing that constitutes furry news. I'm hardly the only one to think so either as both Furry News Network and the Furry Reddit have also carried the story.

Is Furry Reddit really news, though?

Oh, God that doesn't matter at all ...

"Being met with endless bickering and bullshit..."

Welcome to teh furreh commoonitee!!! :-D

I somehow knew it would be Rakuen to write this story.

It's rather disappointing to hear the old staff not quite...(what?) embracing(?) the new staff, to the point that five of them would actually leave. It would be nice to see them back, because abandoning FA isn't going to fix it, no not at all.

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

The thing is there are people who don't want it fixed, they want it destroyed. Clearly the person trying to get to the newer administration with Dox threats know what was a threat to that particular goal.

I've never understood the desire to remove an entire website off the internet. It's not an easy job.

RedCoatCat also no longer has an admin marker. [Ben]

Meanwhile, Furocity.com is redirecting to Inkbunny. No news yet as to whether this is related.

Edit: And now to YouTube. Hacked? Burnt-out admin?

Your rating: None Average: 5 (4 votes)

So now six admins are gone. They dropping fast. But apparently reporting this sort of thing is just part of an agenda. :/

If it helps, I don't think you've got an agenda. In fact, I'm glad you reported on this, because what I've been hearing is just that--hearsay.

Now to SoFurry...

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

So what does this mean for furocity.com? I get redirected to sofurry. Will furocity be back once this is all fixed? Or can I kiss all that artwork and my blogs goodbye?

Your rating: None Average: 4 (5 votes)

I'm glad I took my work down, its a two-bit operation run by kids in furry suits.

Your rating: None Average: 2.2 (11 votes)

Anyone unable to grasp reality that they are not an animal, they are human, they do live in a world where bestiality is frowned upon shouldn't be running a website where people place personal information.

That kind of mentality is easily cracked and who suffer? The idiots who assume their information is safe in their gloved sticky hands.

Your rating: None Average: 5 (6 votes)

Wait, which furry site are we talking about again?

Your rating: None Average: 1.9 (9 votes)

Most of them? FA is no website for the furry community it is a dumpster. If you go dumpster diving you may find a few good pieces you can categorize as 'art' but otherwise you're going to feel dirty once you get out of it.

Your rating: None Average: 3 (3 votes)

That and I know that FA and furocity 'merged' but this happened at FA...so why is furocity down?

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

Their personnel resources merged, their sites remained separate.

My friend is worried she lost all her blogs from over two years will be lost because of the petty arguments between the admins.

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

Let's hope it's not one of those "we didn't think to store backups on another server" situations.

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

Shes going to be devastated if that's the case.

Your rating: None Average: 5 (4 votes)

As far as I know there isn't any reason to blame FA for anything. If Furocity going down is related to the loss of admins it's probably somebody taking it down independently and not a move by anyone on the FA staff.

My friends concern is her blogs, my concern is how lowly the operation within the two sites (FA & Furocity) are.

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

Maybe Furocity was hacked? It redirected to a YouTube video the last I checked it.

Your rating: None Average: 5 (4 votes)

Another update! Daemonshyai has given up on recoding FA and it seems like it'll be over for Furocity as well. He appears to be advising those from Furocity to move over to SoFurry and that's why Furocity has been redirecting.

More updates. My previous post about Daemonshyai may be incorrect. Some people are saying they have spoken to him and the SoFurry post was an imposter and Furocity was hacked.

So if Furocity is now in control by someone who's a greyhat, trying to make FA look bad, they inadvertently made Furocity look worse. Perhaps the hacker should return to Social Engineering 101, lest he do any more damage to people he cares about.

Making the assumption of course that he didn't want to make Gavin look bad because of the edit he made in the faux post as shown below once people started to point that out.

In fact, how could have a hacker gotten control of Furocity's domain and not FurAffinity's? What's that say about the security of one over the other?

Either way, if it was a hacker or not, it still doesn't bode well for Gavin, and I would still suggest people who posted their work find other places to place their eggs if they only placed it in Furocity.

"I had the thought of reprogramming Furaffinity itself to redirect here, but unfortunately, 'Neer didn't give me co-ownership over the domain itself, despite Dax having co-ownership over it-- That and, it wouldn't have been terribly professional to do in the first place."

The irony of that sentence is that it shows that Dragoneer was justified in that decision. Truely this coder is very borderline black hat, and CERTAINLY grey hat. I'm certain SoFurry would not appreciate their name besmirched by having some rouge coder redirect Furaffinity to their site. A lot of furries who use FurAffinity for their commissions would not appreciate having their businesses effected, and would probably think that SoFurry was involved in the sabotage somehow.

Calling such an act "unprofessional" is an understatement, more like "cannibalistic" or "neanderthal-ian" would probably be more accurate.

UPDATE: The quote that I placed in this comment was since redacted, you can see the post with the quote here: http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/2798/underlinedscreenshot.png

Does this mean that the Furocity staff will resign from Furocity due to concerns about the security of *ITS* data?

Hahahaha

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

Furocity is back up, no word from the owner as to what had really happened though.

Your rating: None Average: 5 (3 votes)

Daemonshyai has explained it in a journal now. Seems he had pretty much everything hacked. So Furocity is still around, though FA has lost its admins.
