To forestall complaints, I know that most people attend for a variet of the reasons stated above...but surely there is one over-riding activitiy that draws you. :) For me, it's actually the social aspect.
I attend conventions mainly to put my artwork in the Art Show, not necessarily to sell it but to get noticed and try to build a name for myself in the furry art community. That and to use Feren as my personal slave boy ;) [Feren, get over here! This database isn't working properly, recode it! Your damn laptop froze on me again, fix it! We need reports printed and we need them now!!] Isn't that right Aureth?
I settled on "Meet people" because it includes "To see the Guest of Honor" and "Participate in Panels" and "Sell things" and "Buy things" :P I meet people doing all of those things.
My answer would actually be "To have fun." At SakuraCon, having fun means buying stuff and seeing all the anime hall costumes. At NorWesCon having fun means going to cool panels, hosting our party, eating the fabulous pizza in the bar, and seeing all the strange people in the halls.
But I'm weird...
Hmmm. You know, Aureth, this gives me an idea. Flayrah needs to throw a party at a con!

Yeppers, I'd certainly attend. And if you guys can manage to get some folks out to FC next year, I'm sure they would love to have you all sign up for the slots in the hospitality suite.

Hosting parties at a couple of cons might be a very good thing.
And yes, I highly recommend parties at general sci fi cons. We get a lot more people attending the NorWesCon party than we usually get at our parties at furry cons.
I vote for having one at Necronomicon! Flayrah's a SF portal too, after all. I'll even bring guava pastries....
A houston general SF con is coming up Jun 23. Care for a Flayrah rep there? I was planning to go for the saturday only but I'll be happy to spread the name around if you like.
Reality is not only stranger than we think, it's stranger than we CAN think!

Interesting results so far. I figured the "too meet folks" would win if forced to pick one, but I did sort of expect the selling things to be a little higher than it is. Or maybe thats just a reflection of the demographics visiting the site here.
I think a big part of it is the nature of the self-selecting sample in Internet surveys. What surprises me more is the complete lack of responses to "To See the Guest of Honor," although perhaps it's just everyone's second or third reason for attending a convention. I'd be curious to see a survey like this done where multiple answers were allowed, ranking the reasons one might attend a con.
I usually don't know who the GoH at a convention is until I get there and get the materials. Once I decide I'm going to a con (for whatever reason) I usually don't read the con promotion materials...

Well, as I said, I choose "Meet people" because to me it including the guest of honor. :)
It depends on the guest, but like Feren, I usually make my decision to attend before the guest is announced. Yes, I'm one of those people who buys next year's membership while I'm attending this year's con.
At this last NorWesCon, I went to every single panel Connie Willis, the author guest of honor, was on, even the ones that were added on Sunday. But she's a writer I really enjoy, and at the first panel I saw her on Thursday, she was a HOOT to listen to.
When the guest of honor at a regional furry con is someone I've known since she was 15, long before she became a comic book artist, and who I see socially throughout the year, it seems a little silly to go to the con to meet her. And yes, I'm referring to a real guest of honor. :)

It could be argued that guests are a negative now, because with our connected society there is an increased chance that someone will object to them, for some reason, and broadcast it to the world as justification not to go to the con.
Wow, you necromanced the spit out of this poll.
