Score! Win! Mom of Furry Bonds with Her Son

Ask Papabear - Thu 7 May 2015 - 12:12
[Papabear note: I received the following letter after writing this column. It really made my day!]

I hope I'm not being a bother, but I wanted to share with you my "parenting win" last night.

When my son got home from school, I pulled him aside and told him that I had looked through his phone the other night (as he knows I do occasionally, to spot check) and saw some of his chat discussions where he was talking about being a Furry. I told him initially, it scared the hell out of me. He began to get very defensive, very quickly and I was able to grab his attention long enough to get him to look at my phone, where I showed him the letter I sent you yesterday, asking for insight.

He read it slowly and quietly- I could tell it was taking him a minute to try and figure out what he was reading. Then he asked what it was. I told him that I tried to research what being a Furry was. And I found your website. That I wanted to understand.

In my snooping thru his phone, I had read some entries where he expressed feeling alone and misunderstood. And fears of his family not understanding him. I told him that while I may never fully "get" things he is into and enjoys- I sure as hell will always try my best. I may never know which Pokemon evolve into what- I may never master the PS4 game controller and I'll most likely never play D & D- But I will always try. I can't play the trumpet, but I sure as hell am Band Booster President- I try. And then I said- what I do understand about the Furry community- I'm totally ok with, and I can understand why he takes interest in it, and that it really does fall in line with all his other interests. But, like most things, there can be a side that he just has no business being involved in- and as long as he steers clear of the sexual side of it- I am 100% ok with it.

We have a rule, no online chatting with strangers. He clearly had broken that rule- But I had decided not to take his priveleges away from him. That surprised his a great deal. He had not broken any cardinal rules of giving out personal details- even not exchanging his photo when asked. With that he was responsible- He has an online comminity of like-minded people, that he can't get in our "real- world" community. I can't take that safe haven away from him.

I briefly mentioned that just because you find safety in a group of people, doesn't necissarily mean they all have your best interest at heart. To be aware that there are people out there that use the internet and special interest groups to prey on kids and those with weak souls. To just be aware and use his spidey sense.

Then I told him, I love him for him- in what ever form that may take. If he is a good person, kind to others, taking care of his responsibilities (grades, chores, self care, etc) then he can run around with animal ears and a tail if he so chooses, and I will never think less of him for it.

My son's eyes welled up with tears, he threw his arms around me and just said "thank you".

So, for that, I thank YOU. I still have a lot to learn, but you took the time to give me some much needed reassurance and a pep talk. The little I know about you from your website, I can only imagine that you have been through some challenges of your own. The time you take to help clueless moms like me, matters. Thank you.

Furry's Mom

* * *

You are an amazing mom! Do not thank me. That you had this bonding moment with your son is all on you. I hereby declare you an "Honorary Furry Mom"!

Furry Reddit - Thu 7 May 2015 - 09:40

Hey folks, I was thinking about going to the KC zoo to get some pictures for funzies. The weather has been iffy, but I'd prefer the diffused sunlight from the clouds... But then again, maybe the animals won't come t as much cuz of the crappy weather. I dunno. Anyway, are there any particular photos you guys might like?

Do any of your friends embarrass you (social issues?)

Furry Reddit - Thu 7 May 2015 - 05:57

So, I feel a sort of dilemma. You can call me a bad friend, a jerk, or whatever, but listen to me first and try to understand where I'm coming from. At the risk of sounding like a douche, for the most part I prefer the friends I met online. I'm a remarkably awkward person. But I at least know the boundaries of what I can say and present to random people. My IRL friends have no concept of what's right to say and what's not right to say and they have no such concept of boundaries. They toss obscure anime and video game references at people they just met, they play their music through their phones WITHOUT HEADPHONES, they say inappropriate things around my parents and little brother whenever they're over, and not a single thought goes through their head that says "maybe i shouldn't do this".

I only have maybe ONE IRL friend who knows how to act outside of school, one I could introduce to my other friends, my parents, my girlfriend/wife, my boss, my coworker (just to name some examples) and not have a problem with them. Everyone else is just so socially inept it's embarrassing. They're the type of friends I'd talk with at school, but not the type I'd invite to a barbecue or my wedding or something. And even then, I have this problem online at times too. I have a few furry friends who have their weird fetishes blatantly visible in their Steam profile picture and have a whole text wall of FURRY PRIDE AND ERP as well as all the weird things they're into. NO ONE CARES, GO TO F-LIST FOR THAT. I never conrfront anyone about their behaviors because in the end, it's just how they are, and telling them won't solve anything because there's a good reason they don't notice what they're doing in the first place, they probably don't know it's wrong. They'd have to unlearn a behavior, and to do that just because I'm embarrassed to be around them isn't cool.

I can't say it doesn't bug me though. Does anyone feel the same?

A Girl Among Dragon-Kind

In-Fur-Nation - Thu 7 May 2015 - 01:59

Fans of dragons and other scalies, take note: The Legend of Oescienne is a new fantasy series for younger readers, created by author and artist Jenna Elizabeth Johnson. (She even gets to draw her own covers!) In a far-off world humans have been extinct for centuries… those who remain have long ago been turned into dragons. But then, a real human girl is born, and the evil powers that brought about the transformation long ago are sure to notice. The few dragons who know of the girl’s existence swear to protect her… but to do that, they must keep her unaware of her destiny. In fact, they must not even let her know that she is human! There’s a lot more background on the series at the author’s web site, as well as other books that she’s written. Currently The Legend of Oescienne consists of three novels, one short story collection, and one stand-alone short story (which is available for free at the web site!).

You all help out more than you know.

Furry Reddit - Thu 7 May 2015 - 01:07

I recently made a drunk post on this sub, and it was the best decision I ever made. You all in this community have helped me more than you can know. I was recently diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and some people in my life have not been very... shall we say... understanding. But this sub and community in general are awesome and have been a great escape from life, if only for 5 minutes at a time. Other hobbies and interests aren't nearly as amazing or friendly (I'm looking at you League of Legends) as you all are. I guess all I am trying to say is... thank you. Thank you for inspiring me, thank you for letting me escape from reality, and thank you for the open, warm, furry arms. You all rock. <3

What caused you to join up on this little idea we call "Furry"

Furry Reddit - Thu 7 May 2015 - 00:45

For me, I don't really know what to say. It was probably Q4 2012 when I was first introduced to our little fandom. I remember this dude, we'll call him Jake for the sake of privacy, randomly changed his Skype status and pictures to something that resembled a blue dog (To me this looks more like a furby, but I digress). We spoke almost daily, and frequently played DayZ Mod. I remember asking him why the hell he had changed his picture, and of all things, to something like that. He explained it to me, and my first thoughts had to been "God damn this is odd". We played DayZ for a bit and eventually parted ways for the day. Hours later, I got a call from our mutual friend, we'll call him Bob, again, for the sake of privacy, whom also was interested in playing DayZ. He asked me the very question I had asked Jake, and I explained what Jake had told me. His simple reply was "That's pretty fucking stupid". Being the kid I was, I kinda went with it. Being the kid he was, he ranted on about it and how it was wrong and against blah blah stupid shit. (He was one of those "IF IT ISNT 100 PERCENT SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE I HATE YOU!" kind of people) I listened to him rant on for a few minutes before he quit at the sound of loading into the DayZ world. I slowly parted my ways with these two over the next few months, and continued to do my own thing. For whatever reason, my curiosity got the best of me one day and I decided to really look into it, to do my own research into the subject, I found it so odd and interesting. trying to part the ignorance I had been picked up on, I began to find out about Furry art. Man were some of those people talented. I did my research from there and, well, turns out this is a whole big community of people who were into whole furry thing. I eventually met a furry from a gaming community who gave me a formal introducing, and well here I am. Fast forward 3 year and I regret nothing.

It's late, I doubt I wrote this very well

What caused you to join up?
