To start off, this might be a bit to read, but maybe not. Who knows?

Anyway... Usually when I get bored, I just like to browse around on the sub and look at the top posts. So, eventually, I come across This.

And when I look at it, I can't help but just think 'Awwww' (Keep in mind that I'm straight irl, which is why I'm writing this in the first place.)

So it was cute, okay. I just brush my feelings about it under the carpet. BUT. Yesterday, I felt the need to share it with my [Not furry] friend, just to fool around with him.

BUT HE ALSO THOUGHT IT WAS CUTE. So we start talking about the picture, and he and I were wishing that that would happen in the actual show.

So that made me think. And now, I'm wondering how it is that I can have a slight... attraction (I guess) to that stuff.

To put it bluntly, I'm bisexual in the furry fandom, yet straight IRL, and I'm looking for people to discuss with me how that works.

UPDATE: Okay, so majority of my questions have been answered. I now know what's going on (Currently, at least.) So I'm just gonna kinda let this post die off. Thank you to everybody for providing me with advice. I'll just see what happens down the road, I guess :p

There have been posts discussing what a furry world would be like before, but since it seems like the last post was half a year ago, I thought it wouldn't hurt to start a new discussion.

TL;DR - Read the bolded paragraph.

        The recent Zootopia hype got me thinking about what a furry world would look like, and I've browsed older posts that have discussed this. Some common topics were clothing, furniture, and personal hygiene, but I'd like to address what are the assumptions behind the previous discussion.

        I think a big assumption is that there would be multiple species of animals living together in a single society. First, how likely is it that multiple sapient species would evolve on the same planet? We only have our own Earth as an example, but I'm guessing that the only species that could be called sapient were all in the genus Homo and of that genus only one species, Homo sapiens, exists today. Now, I'm not an evolutionary biologist, but it seems highly unlikely that all mammals would gain sapience as in Zootopia (of course, you can get around all of this by saying that human scientists genetically engineered animals, but most media featuring furries don't even address how the society came to be).

        Supposing that there are multiple sapient species, would they come to form a single society? If the species were in a predator-prey relationship, I definitely would not think so. Why would you live in close proximity to someone who would eat you? If the species were both predators or prey, they still wouldn't necessarily form a single society. Once again, I am not a sociologist, but it seems reasonable to say that you wouldn't live with other people unless there was an advantage. If the species were in competition for a resource, they would fight over it. On the other hand, they might cooperate with each other if cooperation meant that both would get a larger amount of said resource than working individually. This is assuming that two species developed sapience near simultaneously, which seems unlikely if the two were not closely related. All in all, I find it hard to believe that there would be a multispecies society, but of course, that isn't fun. :P

        The biggest assumption, and the one which I have a greatest problem with, is that animals are similar enough to humans that their society would closely resemble ours. Here's a great point from /u/FenrirW0lf from a previous thread:

For example, a big driver behind human settlements being as large and sustainable as they are is the fact that we can grow plants and eat those. Now consider the case of an intelligent race of anthro felines. Supposing they're exclusively carnivorous like real felines, would they even be able to create and sustain large urban populations? Would they even want to? And if so, what other factors would influence that drive if agriculture isn't one of them?

Agriculture is a prerequisite for civilization as we know it, and this would preclude any species that are exclusively carnivorous from developing one. Again, this isn't "fun". It seems to me that visual appeal is one of the most important aspects of furry fandom, I don't think it's reasonable or productive to exclude certain species from being "furried".

        I guess my issue is that oftentimes the characters in furry media are simply humans that happen to look like bipedal animals. In other words, the characters are furries just for their visual appeal, and the fact that someone is a fox has no impact on the story itself. Now this isn't necessary a bad thing, as a skilled artist can use the expressiveness afforded by animals like Lackadaisy, but too often I see anthropomorphic animals being used to compensate for deficiencies in other areas, such as artistic skill or narrative depth. I just want to see furries explored more. If a character's a certain animal, well, that should really have an impact on who they are. And I don't mean superficial impact like "all my pants have to have a tail-hole", or "I am a slow speaker because I am a sloth", but something that fundamentally affects the character's worldview. Of course, I don't want characters to be too non-human since I want them to be relatable, but in general IMO the issue is that content creators have been sticking too close to humans as a model.

        Anyway, this post turned into more of a rant than an organized essay as it went on, but please leave a comment, and tell me what you think.
