What is your favorite fandom-made species?

Furry Reddit - Wed 29 Jul 2015 - 10:33

After getting on the topic of creative creatures in the fandom, it made me wonder what everyone's favorites were. If it's a fringe species, not furry but still kinda relevant (like fumi dragons or ren faire monsters), that's cool. Basically, no movie/book species, looking for content created by average peeps.

I'm expecting two dozen angel dragon responses, but I'm hoping to learn of some new ones today :o

Furry Reddit - Wed 29 Jul 2015 - 09:22

We've seen a lot of posts lately about things you dislike in the fandom, what are things you like?

And going off the artists you don't like post, who are some you do and/or feel need more attention?

I'm doing a raffle for one free reference sheet commission. Pick a number between 1 and 500 and comment it below, whoever's the closest wins. Ends at 11:59pm GMT -6 (Texas)

Furry Reddit - Wed 29 Jul 2015 - 04:07

The number has been chosen by random.org.

I'm going to test out doing reference sheets and I need a lab rat, so to speak. This is experimental, and I have a shitty job that takes too much out of my life, so I can't make any promises on just how much will go into it beyond a front view and a single head detail. However, if I'm feeling it, I'll include more angles/headshots, etc.

It will be drawn with sketchy lines and flat colors, like this. For more examples of my art, here is my FA.

Feeling a bit nervous today...

Furry Reddit - Wed 29 Jul 2015 - 02:27

So, yeah, I'm usually pretty calm, but I'm just thinking about some things lately, and not even some of my favorite art is helping me calm down. I hope you guys can help me a bit. I'm not asking for much. Just kinda want to relax and get myself together.

So Kyoot It Hurts

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 29 Jul 2015 - 01:59

How could you not notice a web site with a name like bekyoot.com? And it’s newly redesigned to boot. “BeKyoot is inspired by life, laughter, and the pursuit of cuteness. There is a story behind every character – a life of whimsy and simplicity sure to set a smile on your face. Many of the characters are based off of real life animals and experiences. The first BeKyoot artbook and webcomic compilation are currently in production along with the first of many children’s books.” Right now though there’s a collection of t-shirts and other clothes, plushy critters, art prints, and other products available.

Is Furry Art Mostly Porn? I have some data for you.

Furry Reddit - Tue 28 Jul 2015 - 21:43

So, a while ago some furry |Name redacted for... reasons.| stipulated that when concerning furry art:

... 60/40 of Porn to Not Porn. Probably exponentially bigger.

Which, since I am a huge nerd, I thought about way to much. People often site the fact that /r/yiff has more subscribers than /r/furry as proof that we are a porn seeking bunch, and the quoted up there up there certainly isn't alone in the belief that furry art=porn.

But what do the numbers say? (This is your warning that the fallowing text is pretty dense with numbers and stuff. Conclusion at bottom of post.)

I took data from the 3 big art sites that are furry specific, DeviantArt, Google and Reddit in various forms, usually by newest submissions and most popular submissions

The definition of Porn I used is the same one in the sidebar here. If it's clearly meant to be sexual, it's porn (I was marginally harsher because if it looked too fetishy or I couldn't tell, I assumed it was sexual)

For a quick base line, if you search google for "Furry" you get a porn rate of 15% (a lot less than the 60% majority threshold) and surprisingly, that remains pretty consistent.

I checked the art sites every so often over a few days and counted the number of sexual images in the newest submissions area.

DeviantArt had the lowest ratio of porn to not porn, averaging around 5% [Note that I searched for Furry and some variants of, and sorted by a few different margins including recent, most popular and most viewed]

Weasyl was the next lowest with an 18% average

FurAffinity was slightly higher at 24%

Inkbunny is your best bet to find pornographic images consistently with an average of almost 50%

That means that, on average, if you go to a furry art site you can expect to see 24.25% Porn.

Clean art makes up for 3/4 of the art that's floating around, by quick calculation.

What about Reddit? Surely the fact that Yiff has more subscribers than Furry is telling, right?

Not so much. While Yiff has more subscribers, it is a far less active subreddit.

/r/yiff has an average of about 1 image an hour, with images making the top 10 by votes with 300 votes (average top 10 post has 457.6 votes)

/r/furry has 3 images posted an hour, average, and a post needs over 500 votes to reach the top ten (with an average of 625.7 points for a top post in r/furry) And that's not counting the non-image posts, which can be as high as 5 posts an hour.

This isn't totally conclusive data, since it does not factor in lurkers and does not factor in what art is more "popular" (which is very, very hard to define, but if trends are any indication porn tends to make up 27% of the most popular images [using reddit upvotes and FA favorites])

I did not sample sites like fchan because data is very hard to collect from image boards, accurate data is almost non existent since it caters to porn specifically.

TLDR, In Conclusion: Most of furry art is NOT porn (around 25% porn vs 75% not porn) Inkbunny has a high porn:clean ratio, deviantart has a low one. Even though there are more users in /r/yiff, /r/furry is more active.
