Wherein Kickstarter makes a promise to do more good…
Illustration from “Air Dragons and Other Sky Creatures” on Kickstarter
With politics, war, and terror in the news 24/7, it’s a rare thing for me to turn up the volume on the car radio, but the sentence “Kickstarter Inc. is no more” kind of stood out. And, yeah, that wasn’t the whole story, or really the story at all. Kickstarter will continue funding cat-based card games, minimalist wallets, and Baby’s First Vampire Novel until doomsday, but the company has a new mission, and legal responsibility. It’s become a Public Benefit Corporation.
What’s that mean? I’m a little hazy on the precise consequences of this decision (and the subject is a little hazy, too), but to the best of my understanding, a standard corporation’s primary (but not exclusive) duty is to provide financial benefit to its shareholders. Does this mean “maximize profits for our owners at any cost?” Well, no, not technically, but anybody that’s been laid off to make a company’s apparent profit higher will tell you that profit is king, and any decision that lowers the company’s financial returns had better be looked at very carefully. Nobody wants angry shareholders.
A Public Benefit Company has more than one bottom line. Part of their company’s stated purpose is to provide a material, positive impact on society and the environment, and may be further refined by committing to serving low-income communities, promoting art and science, or any other benefit to society as a whole. And legally, a third-party group will review them, and make sure they’re making the kind of positive difference they committed to. By making this kind of positive change a powerful part of the company’s structure, the company ensures that they must put their funds and effort toward the greater good of society and the world, and won’t be torn apart by angry shareholders for this sort of behavior.
You can read about Kickstarter’s new business model on their blog. Amazingly, there were no “nays” on the vote to reincorporate under this new structure (I can’t say it was a unanimous decision, because “abstain from voting” is a thing). I’ll be curious to see if Indiegogo follows them down this path–Indiegogo’s already very pro-nonprofit, and it wouldn’t be out of character for Indiegogo to follow suit. I’m actually surprised that they didn’t beat Kickstarter there.
Reviews this week:Two loooong articles about the new 2D fighter Them’s Fightin’ Herds that used to be “My Little Pony, Fighting is Magic,” and a ramble about three virtual novels funding on Patreon, each with a strong sci-fi theme.

What’s Corbeau Backing This Week?
Patreon projects are like radiation in your body, you just keep acquiring. I added two Patreon pages to my monthly money disbursement this week–the e-book Laika Doshi and GeekDad, the parent organization for the nerd-music podcast, Hipster, Please. I need to clear out these monthly payments, they’re starting to add up, but…what to cut? :(
Which fandom has the strongest economy? Surely with Anthrocon and all that it would be us.
This question has been looming over me for a while. Which fandom has the best economy? I'm guessing the two largest fandoms are the furry and the brony fandoms and they both have really big conventions, social networks, and a lot of businesses within the fandoms. For example, we have lots of fursuit makers and studios.
Someone do the math here, how much do you think our economy is worth? Does this fandom have a better economy than the others?

Quiet Falls - Chapter Six - Mystery Horror Story - NSFW for blood, gore, mild drugs, and horror-ness - AND update on my writing stuff in general
So, finally got this chapter done...
Quiet Falls, all six chapters.
First thing you might notice, the front page of the document changed, and that's because I added a link to take you to my "Website" I made. Here's the site by itself:
AdvancedAzrielAngel's Writing Hub.
Basically, I wanted a place to put all my stories so they were easy to find. I figured that'd do the trick nicely.
Also, update on my last writing request thread, I'm working on ArgentStonecutter's writing prompt. I decided to turn it into a multi-chapter story, so I don't know how long that'll take to get a ten-page chapter done to release. The other requests, because of a lack of interest and time, plus writer's block, I'm not going to be doing right now. I'm sorry about that, it's just, I don't want to force out a crappy story for someone.
In other news, this isn't 'new' but I have a Twitter account if somebody wants to follow me and see random tweets once a day or something. I'm @AzrielForReal on there.
So... yeah. Also, for shits and giggles, I made my own subreddit /r/AdvancedAzrielAngel and I also made my own wiki. I wanna see if someone can find the wiki. There's literally nothing on it, and there probably won't be for a while until I can get some help with that stuff, but it's really like the least important thing. I just thought it'd be funny more than anything.

Opinions on FnaF?
I honestly think that it is massively overhyped by its very creepily young fanbase. Thoughts?

Feeling... Kind of accomplished...
Okay, so tonight my big brother had his friends over, and when my brother was gone, I told most of his friends that I am a Bisexual, so there is where I feel accomplished that I've told someone. But a few hours after I told his friends, my brother got drunk and I asked him "How would you feel if I went both ways?" He just stared at me and said "Not... not right now." I don't know if he's upset, disappointed, angry, or confused, but my anxiety is too much to where I'm shaking. I've taken deep breaths to calm down, but I just wanted to let you know that I am more comfortable in hopes that it's something to be happy about, but at the same time this is kind of asking what do you think my brother is thinking? It's mixed signals for me, and I don't know what to think.
Halp.

Why is the world so cruel to furries?
I went to salt lake comic con and got a partial, I went with a what I thought was a friend at the time, apperently the whole day he was taking pictures of me telling people how retarted I was and how "autistic" I was being, he even yanked my tail and threw it away when I wasn't looking, and wouldn't confess. Now everyone I know is talking now about how retarded I am... Why can't we all just be friends?

Join the Dark Side... we have dragons.
The collegiate fur: Dealing with the angst of belonging and self-loathing. [Discussion]
I'd like to preface before hand that this post is designed to serve as a discussion post as well as insightful one regarding the transition to young adulthood within the fandom. The thoughts and opinions within the post are one's held by the poster. The furry fandom serves as a secondary home for some, and a haven for others. I ask that you as a reader keep your comments informative and on topic to the post. Thank you.
I've identified as a furry for a good deal now; however, I've mostly kept being a furry to my close friends and family. From around age 15, I was hoping that by college I'd be able to express who I am and what I am to new people I meet. I always imagined having friends who were furries (or at least accepted the fact I am one), a girlfriend who understands my sexual attraction to the medium, but above all a place of belonging.
Sadly though, I haven't had the opportunity to do such a thing... even with transferring up to a large campus (40,000 students). The campus itself has a moderately well known furry association and club. I've also used other social media to get in touch with furries in the area, but I can't seem to find my clique just yet.
So I asked myself: What is attributing to my separation with the community?
I genuinely dislike the furry persona, and I'm not going to be friends with people I don't like. Hugging, cuddly, overly friendly... it all seems synthetic to me, and I can't just jump into being that way with people. I also find it tough to become friends with people I have no interests with aside from being a furry; though I am relatively limited with being involved within the fandom.
I identify as a heterosexual cisgendered male. Most of the furries I meet, especially within the college scene are predominately gay males. It's not that I'm homophobic, but I feel out of place being invited to a gay bar, and my relationship usually yields a conversation of "..it's a shame you're straight", "...you should try it..", "...men are better in bed..", etc. So basically, not what I want.
I'm more of a closeted furry from the get-go. It's not that I'm embarrassed with being a furry, but there's just so much else going on in my life that the main way people identify me is as "the furry they know". It's not really a thing that comes up too often in conversation, but when it does I'll usually let people know that furries aren't all sex-crazed kids in animal costumes.
As of recent I've begun to loath being a furry more and more, predominately because I joined the community to feel a sense of belonging. Ironically, I haven't felt more disjointed from the fandom than I have as of late. I've talked to other furries who share my viewpoint, some of which have remained within the fandom and other whom have left it. I feel that my general want to be active with local furries stems from the fact that during middle and high school I would draw, role-play, and chat with other furries regularly. Now though, this all seems to be something which never occurs despite how hard I try.
Now I'd like to open this for discussion. Have you felt separated from the fandom? Issue finding a place to belong? What did you do? What do you think would be a useful next step for furries in this situation?
