Dear Papabear,

My brother (17) found the Furry Fandom last year, and my dad was fine with it, and my mom is kinda freaked out by it, and she has told me this but not my brother. I, on the other hand, have always been an advocate for how great and positive the Furry Fandom is and my brother has been really happy for that. My brother loved the Fandom so much I actually owe it to him that I became a Furry because I wanted to see what exactly about it made it so great. Looking back, I think the signs have always been there, and it feels nice to find a place I feel like I belong.

Now here's where my problem is I'm really embarrassed to tell my brother I'm a Furry because he might think I'm just trying to copy him or trying to make fun of him or that I'm ruining something special to him. I do want to tell him, though, because I feel like there is a lot of good memories we can make together doing something we both love.

So here is my question: How do I tell my brother I'm a Furry, especially since I don't want to hurt my relationship with him or my mom if she finds out, too? Anyway, thanks so much for your time and would be very grateful if you could help.

Hi, Logan,

Gosh, I would think your brother would be very happy that his sibling is also a furry and that they could share their furry experiences together. Why would you think otherwise? Are there instances in the past where he thought you were trying to imitate him? Younger siblings sometimes do have a rivalry. When I was little, I would follow my older sister around and try to do stuff with her, which kind of irritated her. She is three years older than I am. Your brother is two years older, which isn't a huge difference, but in the teen years it can seem like it.

I don't know your brother, obviously, but most furries are excited to have a family member who is also a furry and understands why they love it. I would go ahead and tell him. IMHO it should be a bonding experience between the two of you, and will likely become even more so as you get older.

I did it. I told my brother I was a furry, and I didn't make a big deal out of it, so neither did he. I am a little bit of an artist, so I offered to do some art for him, and he was pretty happy.

Forgotten Seconds is another interesting project we came across at Midwest FurFest. It’s an online manga that includes animation and original music, all put together by the international team of Kylie Dracani and Koiyaroid. “Forgotten Seconds is a story about two husky brothers, Teru and Kai, who haven’t seen each other for years, and now will have to learn to embrace their differences in order to overcome their personal conflicts… A story about personal growth, introspection, and the exploration of one’s identity.” The story is being created simultaneously in English, Spanish, and Japanese. The web site has all the information about the manga, their music, and their fundraising efforts.

Introduction

If you’ve ever made a fursona before, then you know just as well as anyone that tying a name to it can be extremely difficult. This is something that people can spend days sometimes weeks making, so to just put a single name to it that encapsulates all the time and effort that went into it is of course not easy. However, it’s certainly not impossible and if you’re struggling to give your new fursona a name, in this post we’ll give you a few tips for naming your fursona.

What Is A Fursona?

However, before we jump into how you can name your fursona, let’s first clarify what a fursona is. In its simplest form, fursonas are cartoon anthropomorphic characters made to represent a furry. Typically the fursona is made to represent its artist or whoever asked for it to be made, however, this isn’t necessarily the case. They are most often used when interacting with other members of the fandom whether it be through Twitter, Discord, furry forums, Reddit, etc. They can use these fursonas as their profile pictures and therefore gives them something to identify with when engaging in these communities.

How Do I Make A Fursona?

Now, of course, these fursonas don’t just materialize into existence by themselves. They are made with meticulous care by furries and artists alike. So, how can you ensure that you are making a good fursona? Well, for one, the most important factor is to do what you want. Don’t be swayed by what other people tell you you should do. Your fursona is supposed to reflect you, don’t worry if you don’t have the most unique species in the world or the color isn’t original, because at the end of the day, if you like it, then what more is there to do? 

 

With this in mind, you should start brainstorming ideas about your fursona. These ideas include the species of your fursona, their personality, their color palette, etc. Think about how each of these factors reflects the personality of your fursona. For example, while it’s not set in stone there are typical traits that are assigned to each species of animal such as foxes being sneaky and cunning or dogs being joyous and bubbly.

What Makes A Good Fursona Name?

While there is no such thing as an objectively good name for your fursona, there are definitely some things you should consider when giving a name to your fursona. Of course, if you have a name in mind that you like just because it sounds nice, then by all means make that the name of your fursona. However, there are definitely some factors you should consider when coming up with a name for your fursona as it could help you out a lot. 

 

One thing to consider is, much like the species of your fursona, how does the name of your fursona reflect your fursona? Unlike with naming a child where you have no idea what they’re going to turn out to be, you have the amazing foresight of knowing the personality of your fursona and therefore being able to name them accordingly. Some people like to skip this step altogether and name their fursona after themselves to align themselves with their fursonas as much as possible. However, if that isn’t your style other people like to give their fursonas lengthy, fantastical names like they’re straight out of Skyrim while on the other end of the spectrum some people just pick normal names like their own but aren’t quite their own, is supposedly makes their fursona feel more real and more human.

If the originality of your fursona’s species is a concern of yours, then not to worry, as FurScience has collected data on the most common and uncommon species of fursonas in a survey of about 6000 entries. What transpired was that the following species are the ten most common fursonas species in descending order: hybrid, wolf, fox, dog, big cat, dragon, mythical, cat, other, and rodent. Then, even within that, there are common dog and big cat breeds that appear more often than others such as German Shepherds or tigers.

What If I Can’t Think Of An Original Fursona Name?

Let’s assume that after reading this you are still completely stumped and just cannot for the life of you think of a name for your fursona, here are a few things you can do to solve this. 

 

#1 Fursona Name Generator 

 

This is likely the easiest solution to your problem as it requires literally zero thinking. All you have to do is click either “get male names”, “get female names” or “get neutral names” and then just pick a name you like. The beauty of it is if you don’t like any of the names you see you can just click generate again until the end of time. 

 

#2 Baby Name Generator 

 

If you’re not quite into the fantasy names of the fursona name generator, why not check out just a normal baby name generator? This way you can generate some normal human names until you find one you like, almost like you’re naming your own baby. 

 

#3 Browsing Other Fursona Names

 

There’s also no shame in looking at other fursonas in the community and taking inspiration from their names. That can give you a better scope of what your fursona’s name could possibly be and even better the kind of name you want your fursona to have.

But more recently they’ve branched out into a new and rather unique form of craft: Ita bags and “wing wallets”. It’s all part of the Dragon Companion series. We’re here already, into another year!
From everyone at the Furry Writers Guild, we wish you all the very best 2023 can bring. We hope your goals for the year are achievable, and that you can make good progress towards them. And, never forget, that a goal can simply be to continue as you are now. Don’t feel the pressure to set a lofty target just to seem like you’re setting something. Be realistic with everything, and that includes your mental wellbeing!

This won’t be a very in-depth newsletter, as I’m writing it a few weeks early because I’ll be in the UK until mid January, but we do have one very important piece of news to share!
As of late 2022, the Furry Writers Guild is now officially a non-profit organisation!
This has the potential to open up a lot of exciting new avenues for the guild in terms of fundraising and helping to develop the furry writing community. The trial run of the furry book month novel bundle was just the first part of this, and you can expect to see so much more coming in the next few months. If all goes well, you should see the first of this by the next newsletter in February!
In many ways, my 18 or so months as president of the guild feels like it has been waiting for this moment. I am so excited to bring my plans to fruition, and I hope you all will be as well!

Dear Papabear,

I am in my mid-twenties. How can I gain confidence? I doubt myself a lot and always fear the worst like failing. That I'll fail everything that I'll do. I've been noticing that I have ADHD-like symptoms for 4 years. I don't even have a driver's license. Fearing that the worst will happen due to these symptoms, it makes other things hard too. Many people have told me to believe in myself. What can I do?

Dear Francesca,

"Believe in yourself" is easier to say than to do. It's a cop-out phrase used by friends and family who don't know how to help you. Well-intentioned, but useless. So, okay, you should believe in yourself, of course, but you can't just snap your fingers and, to quote Captain Picard, make it so. How to proceed?

There are several factors involved that cause us to doubt ourselves:

1. As children, we grow up wanting to please our parents and get their approval. These are the people who nurtured us in infancy and on whom we depended for protection, so this is a natural instinct. So many people grow up with daddy or mommy issues that it is ridiculous. This feeling can linger even after parents die, and it can also be transferred to others whom we respect, admire, or who have power over us, such as teachers, bosses, or spouses. Don't be a people pleaser.
2. Our inherent and instinctive need to fit into our society, to conform, and to meet its expectations also causes us to pursue goals that we feel are socially approved in order to be a valued member of the group. This is why, for example, people conform to a religious institution in which they were raised, or become bigots, or chant at a political rally, or pursue a career they don't actually enjoy. Don't be a conformist.
3. We are raised to believe this is a competitive world and we always have to do better than other people. Don't worry about other people; do things for your own fulfillment.
4. We are criticized for our appearance if we don't meet the standards for what is considered attractive. You're beautiful as you are. Don't worry about shallow standards.

The first thing you need to do is rid yourself of the burden of meeting other people's expectations of what is "success" and what is "failure." If you think that "success" is making lots of money and having lots of material possessions, for example, then you can often feel like a failure if you don't make money and buy expensive things. But, if you feel that "success" is being a kind, giving, and GOOD person who pursues their own dreams, you might find yourself becoming a success very quickly.

Next point: Don't avoid failure, embrace it. EVERYONE fails at least some of the time. I have experienced many failures myself. Hey, even people like Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, and Bill Gates have experienced failures. Failures are not as bad as they sound because they are learning experiences. For example, one time I tried to apply to a university's creative writing program. I submitted fiction samples to them and was roundly rejected. Reexamining what I sent, I realized that my writing was pretentious crap. I learned from that and am a much better writer now. Another example: my novel (only wrote one so far) was rejected 100 times before a publisher accepted it. (Oh, and in the process, I discovered I am a very good nonfiction writer). Just keep trying. Hey, Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind was rejected 40 times. Stephen King's early work was rejected hundreds of times before he published Carrie.

Failure is a learning experience. Do not fear it. Expect it and learn from it. Same with rejection. You WILL experience rejection many times before you find acceptance. Once you get rid of the fears of failure and rejection, you can move forward. You do that by substituting expectation for anticipation. Anticipation is much more anxiety-inducing than expectation.

In summary, to build self-confidence you must:

• Reject other people's definitions of success
• Define your own goals for success independent of society's "norms"
• Embrace failures as learning experiences
• Keep going, no matter what

Somehow we missed The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and the Horse when it was an illustrated book sensation three years ago. But now it’s been made into a new 2D-animated film, directed by the book’s author Charlie Mackesy with the help of animator Peter Baynton (The Tiger Who Came To Tea). “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse features traditional hand-drawn animation to tell a heartwarming tale of the unlikely friendship between the title characters as they journey in search of the boy’s home. Yet, as simple as the story is, the film, like the book, contains deep and profound insights into the things that matter most in life, offering a sorely needed message of hope in a troubled time.” Animation World Network has a detailed article about the film, which premiered on Apple TV+ at Christmas. Interesting to note: Idris Elba, Chief Bogo himself, voices the Fox.

　　由PCD疊加小組所主辦的第二屆Furmily 獸迷力—夕陽的厚禮，於2022年12月17日，在新竹老爺酒店四樓會議廳舉辦。本次活動是主辦方首次與飯店業者合作，並且比第一屆起來，開放參與人數上限至150位，讓沒能參加到第一屆的獸迷們可以有機會參與。

　　本屆除了邀請人氣毛毛丹波做開場表演外，也安排山羊騎士為主講的講座、交換禮物、名片交流與祈願卡等，讓參加者可以輕鬆與他人互動。相較於獸無限、以茶會毛等大型活動，獸迷力以「家」為核心，同時保持著「悠閒交友、敘舊，以及可以輕鬆上手體驗的活動」的性質，不希望參加者要一直趕場跑眾多講座和活動，也讓許多參加者表示獸迷力的活動規劃上讓人放鬆愜意。

　　根據了解，主辦方本次會選擇以飯店為活動空間，主要是希望能找到讓參加者可以在優閒舒適的環境與高度親切感的氛圍下進行，在諸多挑選後便選擇新竹老爺酒店作為本次的活動場地。至於在2021年因疫情取消的活動與本次場地不同，主辦方表示因為2021年選擇的場地桃園翰品酒店因故不再營業，因此才換至本次的活動場地。

　　主辦方表示，本次活動實際到場人數共153人，當中有參加大合照的毛毛總共為69位，登錄參與本次活動的毛毛則高達80位。同時活動方也提供製作毛裝的工作室可以展示在官網上的機會，也提供想要擁有毛裝卻不知道如何開始的獸迷們，一個可以近距離與這些工作者們交流的機會。

　　對於本次活動因為考量到活動品質有人數上限，有獸迷對於無法報名參加表示可惜，主辦方表示會再討論後規劃增加參加人數的可能性。在本次閉幕上也預告將在2023年12月辦理第三屆活動，主題為聖光的召喚，歡迎大家來一同共襄盛舉。
