College furs meet-up at MFF

Furry Reddit - Tue 17 Nov 2015 - 07:54

What's up r/furry! A few of our HokieFurs members from Virginia Tech will be attending Midwest Fur Fest this year and we were hoping to organize some sort of meet-up of furs from other colleges across the country. This would just be an informal social gathering sometime during the convention. Send me a message if any of you college furs plan on attending MFF and if you are interested in meeting up! Go Hokies!

Musings: On the Generations

Furry Reddit - Tue 17 Nov 2015 - 07:15

It has just occurred to me that there are people born after 2001 here. Last time I checked, folks born after 2001 were around 6 years old and didn't know how to use the internet. What happened?

There was a time when I was the inexperienced youngin' who went around making absurd comments and acting cringeworthy. Now that I'm older, I observe and realize that the torch has been handed down and there are plenty more using the internet in their youths.

And the more I ponder this and consider the years, the more surreal it becomes. In ten or so years, just about everyone who is enjoying this now will be a parent, and the ones who are parents now will get to show the internet to their children. I think it'll be weird having someone in your direct bloodline using your favorite website. What if they used r/furry?

Or perhaps years from now, when we're old-farts with a secret vault of disturbing porn beneath our houses, and our children and their children use the internet, could we call the digital world a much more crowded place? It's a strange thought to suddenly think of the internet as something inherited in a way, like the family car. Imagine how hard it'll be to find an original username then? Perhaps they'll remedy that soon.

Anyways, those are my musings. I'm going to get breakfast now.

Random idea I had regarding tails

Furry Reddit - Tue 17 Nov 2015 - 04:16

Now, I'm no expert on either engineering (well, engineering physical things) or art, and for all I know, this has been done before, or else it would be too expensive.

Anyway, wouldn't heated tails be a cool idea? I was thinking about what it would be like to wear a tail and realized that one of the unrealistic things about furry accessory tails as is is the fact that they don't carry body heat the way an actual tail probably would. So why not use either just conduction or, perhaps more likely, some sort of electric heating element, and have the whole thing be warmer than room temperature? Plus it would make hugging them nicer as well. :3 Thoughts?

Wolves in Mongolia

In-Fur-Nation - Tue 17 Nov 2015 - 02:59

More interesting news from Cartoon Brew: Rob Minkoff (The Lion King,  Stuart Little, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, etc etc…!) has signed a two picture deal with Le Vision USA, the American wing of China’s Le Vision Pictures. The first is for a live-action comedy called Silkworms (which we know nothing about, so far). The second, of more interest here, is for an animated adaptation of Chinese author Lu Jiamin’s semi-autobiographical novel Wolf Totem.  Earlier this year the book was adapted into a Chinese-language live-action film, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud from France. The story tells of “…a Chinese student who is sent to Inner Mongolia to teach shepherds and instead learns about the local wolf population, which is under threat by a government apparatchik”. (Shades of Never Cry Wolf, anyone?) At this point we do not know if Mr. Minkoff will simply be producing the animated version, or if he will direct. Nor have we gotten any word as to a projected release date. Guess we’ll find out!

Videogame furs? (box or PC)

Furry Reddit - Tue 17 Nov 2015 - 01:55

I was wondering if there were any other furs that want to play video games with each other on Xbox one or PC? I can also create a steam group.

Hi, r/furry! I'm a graduate student and I want to learn more...will you share your stories?

Furry Reddit - Mon 16 Nov 2015 - 20:48

Hi, r/furry!

I’m a graduate student studying clinical mental health counseling at a large university in the US. For those who might not be aware, clinical counselors are licensed professionals who provide therapy and mental healthcare to individuals, couples, and families. In the state that I live (and will eventually be licensed) in, we have the same scope of practice as psychologists. I’m in the second year of a 2-year program, and am currently taking a course about multiculturalism in counseling. In the course we are learning about different cultural issues that might impact our work as counselors, and how to manage those issues in respectful, productive ways.

One of our assignments this semester has been to pick a culture that: a) We have some type of negative preconceptions about b) Constitutes a clear culture or values system c) Has been disenfranchised or oppressed and to immerse ourselves in that culture. I have chosen the Furry Fandom for this project because I want to learn more about what makes the Fandom unique and how a counselor who is not part of the community can best serve those individuals. So far I have attended a Furry convention and interviewed one person I was lucky enough to meet randomly on my campus. The assignment requires that I interview at least four more people, but of course I would love to hear from as many people as are comfortable to share :D

I understand some people may have reservations about participating in an interview with someone outside the Fandom due to the way some people have portrayed the Fandom and members of it in the media. I invite any and all questions about what this assignment is here as comments or in a PM. I would like to conduct the interviews over PM here on reddit or through email (if you feel comfortable with that) so that individuals may feel safe sharing their stories without judgment.

When this project concludes, I will write a paper and do a short 5 minute presentation for my class about what I have learned and how it will inform my practice as a counselor. The only benefits I will receive from this are 1) knowledge and understanding of a culture different from mine, 2) a grade on an assignment and 3) hopefully some new friends.

If you would be interested and willing to share with me, please PM me and we can coordinate the best way to do an interview. I appreciate everyone in advance for being so open and happy to help. You guys rock :D
