When Is It Okay to Make a Fursuit Based on a Film Character?

Ask Papabear - Sun 4 Jun 2023 - 14:25
Papabear,

Hi! I'm a furry, and I really really love dinosaurs. Especially Blue the raptor. You see, I want to make her into a fursuit. It would have her same pattern as she has in the movie, of course. She would look just like she was out of the movie. This will be for my enjoyment. I would wear it at furry conventions and out in public etc. But I won't be making money off of the suit.

I would like to know if it's okay for me to make a fursuit out of Blue. I have other OCs that I've designed and I plan on getting them made into fursuits as well. I've tried to design a raptor, but I don't really like any that I make (also can't find a good F2U [free-to-use] raptor base--I'm broke lol), so is it okay for me to make a fursuit out of her?

Blue the Raptor (age 17)

* * *

Dear Blue,

Copyright is an interesting field. I've recently been working on obtaining copyright on some books and have learned a few things on the topic. A big part of copyright is that the thing you are copyrighting must be unique and original. A velociraptor like Blue in the Jurassic Park movies is not an original creation any more than trying to copyright, say, a horse. A name must also be unique. For example, I am currently registering Uncle Bear Publishing as a trademarked name. While the word "publishing" can't be trademarked, "Uncle Bear Publishing" is, indeed, unique and can be. When it comes to "Blue," that is certainly not a unique word in and of itself and is not copyrightable (rather like Trump trying to copyright "you're fired"). The only thing even vaguely unique about Blue is the blue stripe she has down her side. This is not enough to qualify as "original."

So, on those grounds, I would say you are fine. You are also fine because you are not using Blue the Velociraptor to make money, so your dressing up as Blue is not going to cost the movie studio any money. Indeed, by increasing awareness of Blue it could actually be seen as promoting the movies and helping Universal make some sales.

A good touchstone on this topic is Disney. As you might know, Disney jealously guards its copyrighted characters. Even so, I have seen people in Minnie Mouse and Brer Fox fursuits at cons. It is highly unlikely that you will be "caught" in a Blue the Velociraptor outfit. And even if you were, the worst that would likely happen is you would get a "cease and desist" letter from Universal's lawyers, which means you wouldn't get a lawsuit if you stopped wearing the fursuit (scaley suit) in public.

Here's some more about Disney and copyright FYI: https://themouselets.com/whats-the-deal-with-using-disney-intellectual-property.

I hope this information is useful. In short, I think you're fine.

Have fun!

FWG Monthly Newsletter June 2023

Furry Writers' Guild - Sat 3 Jun 2023 - 18:26

May certainly felt like a busy month with all three furry writing awards getting announced.
It was also an important month in the greater writing sphere, with the WGA strike in USA filmmaking, with possible actors strikes to follow. The FWG put out a statement earlier in May supporting this strike. Part of the purpose of the FWG is to benefit furry writers, and we stand in solidarity with other writing communities and organisations trying to do the same to their writers.

Once more, the FWG would like to offer congratulations to everyone who was a finalist and winner in the three furry writing awards throughout the month.
These awards help to showcase the massive talent on display in the writing community – it is no easy feat to get nominated as a finalist, especially given the quality of works that didn’t even make it that far. The winners and finalists should be proud of their achievements.
For those who missed the awards ceremonies, you can catch up on the finalists and where to find them on the FWG’s wrap-up posts.

Bear Out Of Nowhere

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 31 May 2023 - 11:42

Driving around Southern California, we saw this on a billboard, of all things. Bearific.com. Knowing nothing about it, we had to investigate! Here’s what we found out about Bearific Books: “Katelyn Lonas is 16 years old and the CEO of her company, Bearific. Currently, she has over 60 published books, which are sold worldwide and available on Barnes & Noble and Walmart. Katelyn has also published five apps on the Google Play Store and has a YouTube channel called Bearific Studios, where she posts drawing videos and cartoons based on her books. She published her first book when she was 9 years old, and it was called Bearific Adventure.” And yes, it’s all about bears. Check out her web site!

Losing Friends We Have Wronged Serves as an Important Life Lesson

Ask Papabear - Tue 30 May 2023 - 19:49
Papabear,

So, this is gonna be a bit of a long one but I need some guidance because I don't know where else to go.

Recently, I left the furry community due to feeling I didn't fit in it no more. I was in a depressed state. I lost people that brought me out of my shell and got me to do art again, and the people that were still there for me stopped helping me as they didn't know what else to do.

To provide context, I was with a group of people that inspired me to draw again - and I happened to piss them off doing an RP. I tried doing art for them as a way of saying sorry, and after that I was gonna leave them alone, but it backfired hard in my face and got me chewed out by a few of them.

When I talked to this other group of friends, one of them exhausted his options to help me get over it, and the rest just stayed silent no matter how much I reached out.

And it got to a point where I didn't want to stick around anymore. I couldn't handle the weight of the pain I felt. I got tired of dealing with it, and there was nothing else I could do to help alleviate the pressure of it all.

Today, I am getting help and taking steps to keep myself on the up and up. But every now and again I keep thinking about those people I RP'd [with] and I've been trying to forget them so I don't hurt anymore.

The question I have is: How do I come to terms with this whole thing, even though I've accepted that I'll never see them again?

* * *

Dear Furiend,

Apologies for the slow reply.

I'll start by giving you kudos for getting help, which I interpret to mean some professional counseling, an excellent step to take. Since you only provide generalities here without explaining details as to what you did, exactly, to upset your friends so much, I will reply with some generalized words of advice.

As much as we want to be furry, let's face it: we're human. And being human means we can make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes hurt feelings and cost us friends. In the worst-case scenarios, those friends are gone for good. Even a sincere, heartfelt apology combined with attempts to make amends and compensate for the hurt will not work.

It's also natural to think a lot about what happened and even obsess about the past, creating a cloud over our heads that casts a shadow on our lives.

So, what do you do?

Take stock of what you have done so far. The essential steps include: 1) Admitting you made a mistake; 2) Apologizing for the mistake; 3) Making amends for the mistake; 4) Promising not to make that mistake again and to try to do better in the future. At any point in the process, the person you have offended can reject your gestures. When that happens, you will just have to accept it.

An important lesson in life is that you can't change other people's behaviors and reactions; you can't control them. The only thing you have control over is your own actions and reactions.

It is also important to keep in mind that when you do something wrong--whether or not you intended to do it--it is not necessarily a failure. We all make mistakes, and the key is to learn from those mistakes and take those lessons to heart so you may become a better human being as a result. If you constantly strive to be a better person, then even if those people you have wronged in the past do not forgive you, it's okay. It's not a loss; it's a lesson.

And that's how you come to terms with something like this. You accept the consequences of your mistake and consider it a lesson in life that will help you to evolve into a better person in the future.  We cannot change the past, but changing the past is not what life is about. We are here to learn, and as long as we keep learning, we will stay on the right path in life.

Hugs,
Papabear

Introduction

Did you just embrace furryhood? Congratulations.

It’s time to get in touch with some fellow furries.

The world has now become a global village – quite literally. You can now connect with others who have similar interests and hobbies, virtually.

Reddit (you may have heard of it) is a website where users may join subreddits that concentrate on particular subjects or themes. For furries just looking for a laugh or to share one of their own memes, subreddits like  r/furry_irl exist, so what is it?

What are Subreddits?

If you don’t already know what Reddit is, it is one of the most used sites in the world and can be used for a pretty wide variety of things. From memes, to discussion threads, to some more explicit after-dark content, Reddit does it all. Users discuss nearly anything, from politics and news to interests and hobbies.

Reddit is distributed into categories called subreddits which allow users to quickly and easily find the niche they are looking for. These subreddits are equivalent to mini-forums or groups, each concentrating on a particular subject or theme.

Subreddits can cover various topics and are established and regulated by normal individuals like you and me. Subreddits exist for mainstream news, entertainment, and even some specialized interests.

Members can comment, post, and share links related to the subject under each subreddit’s rules and regulations. The relevance or interest of these postings is then determined by the upvotes or downvotes received from other users.

Thanks to subreddits, it has never been easier to find people around the globe with the same hyper-specific interest as you.

Joining a subreddit that matches your interest will allow you to share your experiences and receive assistance with specific problems. Speaking of hyper-specific interests, you can find r/furry_irl, a community for furries to share their experiences and interests.

Example of how subreddits work

What Is Furry IRL?

Furry IRL is a subreddit where members of the furry community can post exclusively light-hearted or funny furry content. Although members occasionally discuss other topics too, Furry IRL is predominantly a place for furries to share memes and comics.

Furry memes are a genre of their own. While some of them poke fun at the subculture itself, others use anthropomorphic animals in an ironic or funny way to comment on current events and human behavior.

The furry meme community has grown significantly in recent years, especially on platforms like Tumblr, Instagram, and Twitter. But Reddit remains the favorite due to its larger user base and its organized layout.

In terms of structure or humour, Furry IRL is supposed to parody the popular subreddit MeIRL which is a subreddit dedicated to specifically relatable memes.

From fursuit commissions to art commissions, Fursonafy has your back "They where extremely understanding and patient. They provided fast response times and amazing communication" Edward

Reddit has become a massive platform for people to connect from all across the world. The forum got over 1.7 billion visits in May 2022, making it one of the most popular sites in the world.

So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that you can use Furry IRL in many ways. Here are some of them.

Connect With Other Furries Through Humor

If you’ve recently come out as a furry, it can be hard to navigate everything on your own. Maybe you don’t have furries around you. Or, you might not know where to find furries in your area to hang out with.

Furry IRL can be your connection to other furries. Since it’s online, you won’t have to incur travel costs to meet fellow furries. Plus, being a part of the subreddit will give you a sense of community.

You can share memes you find online or simply make your own. If you’re a comic lover, you might even go to Canva to create some furry-related comics.

Share Your Comics

Have you been creating furry comics lately? Do you have no one to share them with?

Worry not; Furry IRL is just the place for you. Many people share self-made memes and comics on the subreddit.

Who knows, you might find a community that’s interested in your humor and art style.

Learn About the Furry Norms

New furries are often in the dark about how to conduct themselves in the fandom. Furry IRL can be a great place to learn about all the norms and conventions that furries follow and observe.

Let’s say you’ve never been to a furry convention before, but you’re planning to go to one soon. You might be unsure about what to wear, how to behave, and what to expect.

Your buddies in the Furry IRL could guide you.

Have a Safe Space to Explore Your Identity

Furry IRL is a furry family. You can explore your identity and have fun without worrying about judgment or being ostracized. Everyone in the community has the same interests as you, so it shouldn’t be hard to find someone who shares the same definition of ‘funny’ as you.

What Kind of Memes Can You Find In Furry IRL?

You can find many kinds of memes in Furry IRL. Here are some common types.

Cute and Wholesome

These memes are meant to be cute and heartwarming. They’re just the way to brighten your day or get a smile on your face.

For example, here’s a wholesome comic about two furries in love. These memes and comics are generally harmless and always positive.

Humorous

Humorous memes use furry characters to create a funny scenario or poke fun at pop culture. These memes may include references to popular trends or memes. They may also be parodies or puns.

Reaction Memes

Think of these as furry-fied reaction GIFs. They show a character’s expressions or reactions to situations, often in funny ways.

You might need to keep up with popular pop culture trends to understand these memes. But if you’re struggling to get what they mean, we’d advise looking through the comment section.

TikTok Videos

With the recent increase in TikTok use, TikTok videos have been surfacing on all other social media platforms, including Reddit. You’ll find plenty of funny furry-related TikTok videos on Furry IRL.

These videos can help you find more funny content. All you have to do is follow the creator or the furry hashtag they’re using on TikTok to get similar content.

Tips for Making Furry Memes and Comics

If you want to share self-made memes in Furry IRL, here are some tips to help you rack up those comments.

  • Keep It Simple: This is especially important if you’re making a comic with multiple panels. Try not to add too much detail or complicated art styles because it can be overwhelming and detract from the message you are trying to get across.
  • Use High-Res Images: They don’t necessarily have to be cinema-quality. But they shouldn’t be pixelated or unreadable, either.
  • Be Creative: Give your imagination a nudge. If a pop culture trend has been going around, hop on the bandwagon, but take a furry approach.
  • Be Respectful: Do not hurt anyone’s sentiments when making furry memes or comics. Avoid using derogatory terms or offensive language.
  • Get Feedback: If you’ve got a furry buddy, get feedback from them before sharing your meme on the subreddit. They might give some helpful input.

When scouring for ideas, you can check out some other furry-related subreddits. We’ve got a list for you below.

Which Other Subreddits Can Furries Follow?

While Furry IRL is a good subreddit, it’s not the only one. You might want to follow other meme-filled subreddits. Or, you may simply want to be part of a subreddit where you can see other people’s art or learn more about the fandom.

Here are some other subreddits you can follow.

/r/furry

/r/furry is another excellent subreddit where you can learn more about the furry fandom, share your artwork, get feedback, and make furry friends.

If you scroll through the subreddit, you’ll notice that it’s very art-oriented. Many people share their artwork here, and the comments are filled with appreciation or feedback.

/r/yiffinhell/

/r/yiffinhell/ caters to older furries. You must be older than 18 to be a part of this community. The subreddit aims to push through the shame and embarrassment often associated with the furry community.

But that does not mean discrimination, homophobia, racism, or bigotry of any kind is allowed. You must follow the subreddit’s rules to be a part of it. Rest assured; it’s a safe place to share your thoughts and learn more.

But if you’re a young furry, stick to other options in this list.

/r/fursuit/

When you join the furry community, one of your first concerns is to get a fursuit. /r/fursuit/ is just the place to learn about fursuits and get inspiration.

If you plan to get a custom fursuit made at some point in the future, you should know that most sites don’t commission fursuit styles other furries are already using. You’re supposed to come up with your style. Or, you can commission the manufacturer to design a fursuit for you.

But before you do that, try getting inspiration from /r/fursuit/. You may also find people selling their old fursuits that you can get for a reasonable price.

r/furrymemes/

Want to have a fun time and share a laugh? The r/furrymemes/ should be on your list of furry subreddits to join.

It’s exactly how it sounds. You can find a ton of memes here about the furry community. If you’re feeling a bit creative, you can even share the memes you have made.

It’s quite similar to Furry IRL. The memes and comics are also somewhat similar.

The key is to be respectful and not post anything that discriminates or can be seen as offensive.

r/FurryArtSchool/

Furries are into art. It’s a fact as clear as day.

But when you’re starting out, understanding how to draw or create digital art can be a bit tricky. That’s where r/FurryArtSchool/ comes in.

The subreddit has a lot of tutorials from expert artists that you can learn from. If you ever get stuck, you can simply post your unfinished artwork and ask questions about it.

For example, if you’re struggling with getting the proportions right or are confused about the color scheme, the furry community in the subreddit can be of enormous help.

How to Use Subreddits Safely?

Subreddits can be very helpful, but it’s essential to be safe. Here are some tips for using the platform safely.

Keep Your Information Private.

Do not share personal information, such as your phone number, address, or government ID, with anyone on Reddit. Doing so can make you vulnerable to threats and theft.

No matter how friendly someone seems, do not share personal information with them. If someone is nagging you, do not maintain contact with them.

Click on Links Cautiously.

If the links look suspicious, do not click on them. Some signs of suspicious links are language you don’t understand, spelling errors, broken links, etc.

Report Inappropriate Content.

If you see any inappropriate content, report it to the admin immediately. Most subreddits also have moderators. You should report the content to them. Do not engage with such content.

Some examples of inappropriate content include the following:

  • Illegal content, such as content promoting illicit or terrorist activities
  • Harassment and hate speed toward someone based on ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, or gender
  • Pornographic content
  • Spam or phishing content
Be Mindful of Your Activity.

Keep in mind that your online footprint is traceable. So, be mindful of the content you post and interact with. The information you share on the subreddit should be free of negativity and bigotry.

Use a Strong Password.

Having a strong password is vital for keeping your account secure. An excellent way to make your password safe is using a mix of uppercase, numbers, and lowercase letters.

Image via WIRED

Conclusion

Furry IRL is among the best subreddits to learn from and engage with other furries. Besides Furry IRL, you can check out other subreddits, such as /r/fursuit/, r/furrymemes/, and r/FurryArtSchool/.

No matter which subreddit you visit, make sure you stay safe. You should not engage in wrongful activities or share your personal information. As long as you’re safe and follow the subreddit’s rules, you should have a great time learning, sharing, and networking.

Join now! Nor Cal Furries call for volunteers for the San Francisco Pride Parade on June 25.

Dogpatch Press - Thu 25 May 2023 - 10:00

What does Pride mean to you?

If Pride means being authentically yourself and refusing to hide, the San Francisco Pride Parade is one of the best places in the world. It’s so real when you’re there with a group, in the moment when they say GO, then you turn the corner onto the main parade route and the crowd roars. That’s how to BE.

The Nor Cal Furries will march with a parade float on June 25. (Furry is an interest that harmonizes with LGBT members, and many other interest groups participate.) Meanwhile, some people just found out that furries exist and want to attack them; for example, anti-LGBT law has forced Megaplex to restrict attendance due to power abuse by the government. This shows ongoing history where simply existing is an undebatable political statement. But people who oppose LGBT existence and think this is new activism don’t know that furries have been award-winning Pride marchers for 21 years. And the founders of Pride knew that just being there is winning. We can look forward to another 21 years of being there… but it won’t happen by itself.

It’s up to us and YOU. Nor Cal Furries can’t go without volunteer staff, so please answer or spread the call. If you can’t volunteer, come attend and tell a friend.

CALL FOR STAFF – SIGN UP HERE > https://forms.gle/Pb8n1UXDCTLNKaW6A

Let’s meet some of the team you can join (in no special order). Dogpatch Press asked each one: What does Pride mean to you, and why make this event happen?

Zoren (Telegram: ZorenManray)

Pride means showing our uniqueness. That we are all so diverse. Pride also shows that despite our differences we still can all come together as one and celebrate our love and passions in their many different ways. I continue to lead the contingent not for personal gain or acclaim, I do this to bring together that magic we all make together and share it with the rest of the world.

Who is Zoren?

Hailing from the Sacramento metro area, Zoren has been around the furry fandom for many years. Giving back to the community, you will find him volunteering at multiple regional furry conventions and events. He’s helped out with quite a few over the years, including leading the furry contingent in the San Francisco Pride Parade since 2018.

Super Jay (Telegram: SuperJayhawk)

Growing up as a minority, Super Jayhawk chose to fight for equality and against prejudice both online and in real life. The Pride Celebration and parade means standing up and supporting equality for everyone, and SuperJay is proud to march with the NorCal Furries in the San Francisco Pride Parade and help everyone be absolutely fabulous!

Super Jayhawk has been performing, coordinating and assisting in local fursuiting events with Critters by the Bay, a local fursuit performance group, for over 20 years, including parades, amusement park, city and charity events. Fursuiting in public can be challenging, and Super Jayhawk is commited to making sure everything runs smoothly and performers are looked out for, and to make the event an awesome experience.

Didge (Telegram: DidgeDingo)

Pride to me is showing who we are and that we are here. It’s a show of force that we will not be silenced or hidden away through legislation or other’s religious/political ideology.

It’s a reminder to younger LGBTQ+ generations of where we came from and what we have fought to achieve over decades.

Painting the float for the parade

It’s kinda cliché, but pride really can boil down to showing the world that Love is Love and nothing will change that.

What really makes Pride worth it is the feeling of being on the float and that moment you turn onto Market street. You see the first part of what can be a million people lining the street and the realization that all these people support you for you, your friends for who they are and it’s unconditional – it’s truly amazing and emotional. Even after being out to various levels degrees for 20 years or more, that feeling is still unreal.

About me: Age 39 (well I’ll be 39 by pride lol), and I’ve been a furry for about 27 years. I started out as a dragon but found myself as a dingo about 10-12 years ago. Born and raised in the central valley, Ohio State grad and forever a Buckeye. I am a licensed civil engineer who works for the State. You’ll find me at various events in one of the suits I have been lucky enough to get over many years.

Disko (Telegram: Mr_Disk0)

Hey there! Names Mr. D!sk0 Dog, I’ve been in the community for almost 20 years and help with events here and there.

Pride means everything to me, for me it’s about standing up for our rights in an ever changing society that would soon forget about what we do. I wish I could say we no longer need to fight for these rights, that we live in a cohesive relationship with others working together towards greater goals. However that is not the case, there are people that want strip these rights from us. Basic rights of equality. Something I believe should not even be questioned. Yet here we are… still fighting. Progress has been made. Yet the second we relax, these rights will be removed if we let them.

This event to me means bringing us together, to stand as equals to be proud of who you are, to be proud of what we can achieve if you just apply yourselves. Back in 2019 after the parade I wanted us to focus on a new project. Instead of renting trucks why don’t we build our own? Fast-forward to today and we are still making changes and building on a platform that we can take into the future, for all sorts of events, not just Pride.

I often think of these quotes from this movie when thinking on the actions we do here and what they mean to me. To us all.

“Greed has poisoned men’s souls
Has barricaded the world with hate
Has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed
Our knowledge has made us cynical
Our cleverness, hard and unkind
We think too much and feel too little
More than machinery we need humanity
More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness
Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.”

Charlie Chaplin.
The Great Dictator.

Remember, that in all that we do… we do with Love. We do this with Pride.

Fly, Little Pre-Bird

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 24 May 2023 - 12:18

This showed up recently at Animation World Network: “No Fat Ego’s Niels Juul has teamed with Sherman Theatrical Entertainment to adapt Inkas the Ramferinkas into an animated musical. The film, which follows a small flying dinosaur, pulls from a decades-long project from the Sherman Brothers, best known for their musical contributions to multiple Disney classics, including The Jungle Book and Mary Poppins. The upcoming film marks the only musical from the late Robert B. Sherman and his brother Richard M. Sherman. Before teaming with Disney, the brothers were focused on adapting Inkas, which began as a children’s record from 1951, into a film. In the mid-2000s, Robert’s son Robbie optioned the rights to the Inkas IP and worked with his father and uncle to pen a feature-length script.” The project has been on hold since 2008, but it’s back in production now. No release date yet, but we’ll let you know more when we do!
