Bunnies, Bongs, and B**bies

In-Fur-Nation - Wed 6 Jul 2016 - 01:38

Also from Action Lab we have a new full-color comic trade paperback that is decidedly not for young readers! It’s called Itty Bitty Bunnies: Friendgasm. “The Itty Bitty Bunnies (Phil and Tyrone) make a deal with the Devil, awake the magic Bong Genie, start a food fight that turns homicidal, and do lots and LOTS of drugs. It’s just another day in Rainbow Pixie Candy Land!” And it comes to us from the rather twisted mind of Australian cartoonist and writer Dean Rankine. It’s on the shelves now and available from Previews magalog.

Book of the Month: Gods With Fur

Furry Writers' Guild - Tue 5 Jul 2016 - 11:00

July 2016’s Book of the Month is Gods With Fur, a new anthology edited by Fred Patten and published by FurPlanet.

gwf-cover

Art by Teagan Gavet

From the very beginning, mankind has found the divine in the shape of animals from across the world. Deities such as Ganesha, Coyote, Anubis, and The Monkey King—even Zeus took to the wing from time to time. In ancient Egyptian deserts, misty Central American rainforests, and across wind swept tundra, man has forever told stories of gods with fur, feathers, scales, or tusks.

Gods With Fur features twenty-three new stories of divine animals working their will upon the land. You may recognize gods such as Bastet, while other stories see authors working in their familiar worlds, such as M. R. Anglin’s Silver Foxes books or Kyell Gold’s Forester University books. Others are set in new worlds where the anthropomorphic gods have tales to tell us. We are proud to present this new furry view of divinity.

The majority of contributions in Gods With Fur are from FWG members. The full table of contents:

  • “400 Rabbits,” Alice “Huskyteer” Dryden
  • “Contract Negotiations,” Field T. Mouse
  • “On the Run from Isofell,” M. R. Anglin
  • “To the Reader…,” Alan Loewen
  • “First Chosen,” BanWynn Oakshadow
  • “All Of You Are In Me,” Kyell Gold
  • “Yesterday’s Trickster,” NightEyes DaySpring
  • “The Gods of Necessity,” Jefferson Swycaffer
  • “The Precession of the Equinoxes,” Michael H. Payne
  • “Deity Theory,” James L. Steele
  • “Questor’s Gambit,” Mary E. Lowd
  • “Fenrir’s Saga,” Televassi
  • “The Three Days of the Jackal,” Samuel C. Conway

Frolic ‘the original furry nightclub’ to lose historic venue – community responds.

Dogpatch Press - Tue 5 Jul 2016 - 10:52
Pic by Loco

Pic by Loco

The future is as dim as the lighting at The Stud, one of San Francisco’s most loved dive/gay bars.  The property is being swept up in a wave of real estate speculation and gentrification that shows no sign of ebbing.  Some luminaries of local culture are just treading water, while many are sinking under. They just can’t afford to live in their own city any more.

One by one, the lights of San Francisco night life are going out.  Now the Stud is set to close.

On every second Saturday each month, furries flock there for Frolic dance party.  It’s the premiere event for their thriving local scene.  The venue loves furries as much as they love each other, so Frolic has been steadily supported since 2010. Their success bore a litter of furry club events across North America that look up to it for inspiration, from Foxtrot in Denver, to Suit-Up Saturday in Minneapolis.

Calling it “the Original” furry dance party may be debatable (credit may be due for a few rave-type events outside of North America) – but there’s no debating its influence.  It will be very sad if Frolic loses it’s home.

It’s a local story, but in spirit, it touches furries anywhere who love to dance and have their own paw-hold in the nightlife.  Having their own established club doesn’t happen easily for an isolated niche of maligned yet super loveable young people.  Frolic set the bar high for that.  It isn’t your average family-friendly daytime convention – its power comes after dark.  Talking animal-people look and feel better to dance with in the magical murk of a club from an alternate fantasy dimension.  Have a drink and hug one for an experience better than drugs. Or pick one up.  Say: “knock knock” – “who’s there”? – “knot me…”FrolicFlier

Frolic is only one among many other events at The Stud, from drag and burlesque to gay goth/industrial nights.  Each carry on San Francisco’s fabled bohemian past, that’s now often lost and neglected under a chromed tech future.  Lady Gaga, Bjork and Matthew Barney are on a long list of past performers and patrons of note.  The Stud is one of the oldest gay bars in San Francisco, standing proud among a handful left from the old days when a whole swathe of the city was wilder than today.  It’s more than a bar, it’s a place to find yourself.

Shiny new condo development has been looming in a former vacant lot right outside the building. For a while, there’s been whispering about it bringing in a potential horde of residents ready to make noise complaints that would quickly get the place shut down. Just recently, I talked to bartenders Brian and Bernadette, and they said they had a long term lease and were safe.  This news was a shock.

All isn’t lost yet. There’s talk of a community co-op coming together to buy the building.  Maybe they could set up an Indiegogo fund, and charge a monthly membership due.  Would that be enough?  Maybe it still wouldn’t save the building from condo complaints.  However, in the 1980’s The Stud actually had moved locations and stayed strong, so the past shows power to carry on.  There’s also a “historic business” card to play with SF’s politicians.  If none of that succeeds, maybe Frolic could move to DNA Lounge or the Eagle (nearby venue that has a pup play night.)  Some places in Oakland could be good to try.

Other communities come together to save boring old houses because some dead president slept there. I love that this gathers a living, thriving community around an old gay bar.  While waiting to find out if it can be saved, there’s a pervasive sense of unfairness and loss among furries and friends.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

UPDATE:

SF Examiner (June 26, previous to this news:)  A golden legacy among gay bars

McElhaney considers The Stud to be one of The City’s “Last bastions of freakdom… We’re a rare breed that’s disappearing.” One anniversary party guest was a sabertooth cat who stole the dancefloor. The owner knows him. “He’s a lovely freak,” McElhaney said.

The furry party Frolic, every second Saturday, is the only regularly-occurring furry party in San Francisco.

“I think people walk in and they’re just like, ‘Oh, I’m home, I’m here.’ They hear about an event we have going and they go, ‘Wow, this is totally different than any other gay bar I’ve been in,’” McElhaney said.

He Feels His BF Is Influencing Him to Like Furporn

Ask Papabear - Mon 4 Jul 2016 - 13:41
Hello.

My name is Rueben and I would like to ask you an important question. My boyfriend of two years, XXX, is worried about me. He introduced me to the furry lifestyle three years ago and has encouraged me into all sorts of furry stuff, being into a furry thing.

Another point is that I have recently signed up to 4chan.com and have seen many graphic images and videos online, most of which involving men in giraffe costumes. I don't even know how it happened, I was just searching up baddragon.com and then landing on really sexual images, my question is, is it weird if the manipulation of being a furry has an impact on my physicality and my thoughts towards more specifically my sexual fantasies and thoughts about it at night.

The real issue is that Liam is 16, then, and since there is a five year gap all my friends now call me Peter File but I don't care; the heart wants what the heart wants. ...

Ty for anything you can say should I move on or continue on this path as five years isn't really an issue once we're older. Thank You.

Rueben Pingle (Toronto, age 21)

* * *

Hi, Rueben,

This is a couple of questions, of course. Let’s tackle the age thing, first. Not that long ago, marrying a 16-year-old (and even younger) was commonplace. Today, we are more squeamish about such things. In America, most states have a legal age of consent set at 18, but I notice that in Canada the age of sexual consent is 16 (and before 2008 it was 14!), when it involves consensual sex and not pornography or sexual slavery. Anyway, when it comes to the legal side of it, you’re fine in Canada. Socially, as you note, you might set yourself up for a little mocking. Sounds like you are taking it in stride. My only advice for you there is to take it very slowly, especially with big decisions such as sex or possible engagement. That said, Papabear finds nothing wrong, morally, with what you are doing and I wish you well. Indeed, as the two of you age, this will become less and less of an issue.

As for furporn and the whole giraffe thing, I will have to shake a finger at you and say, “Do not blame furry art for what turns you on sexually” (c'mon, you don't just accidentally find giraffe porn; even in Furryland, you have to do a little searching on something that specific). Too many people (especially mundanes) raise the accusation that furporn perverts people. Actually, people’s sexuality is already set up inside them, so they are primed to like, or not like, what they find on the Internet. If you didn’t have something within you already that would find naked anthro giraffes sexy, then you wouldn’t be turned on upon seeing them on a website. So, don’t blame the porn.

Furthermore, don’t blame your boyfriend for influencing you here. You are 21 and perfectly capable of showing him the palm of your hand and saying, “Hey, I’m fine if you’re into that, but it’s not for me.” This does not mean that the two of you cannot have a healthy, loving relationship. I loved my mate to pieces, and he loved me, but he was not a furry. Be a furry or don’t be a furry; that is your decision, not anyone else’s. And, if you like anthro-giraffe porn and have fantasies about it, share them with your mate and have fun with it.
I hope that answers your question.

Wishing You Love and Happiness,

Papabear

One Day For Digimon

In-Fur-Nation - Mon 4 Jul 2016 - 01:58

According to Animation World Network, Toei Animation and Eleven Arts are set to release the latest Digimon anime feature in an English-language version for North America this fall. Entitled Digimon Adventure tri. – Chapter 1: Reunion. (whew!), the film is set to premier as a one-day-only Fathom Events screening at select theaters, followed by a more traditional roll-out to various cities. “It’s been six years since the summer adventure when Tai (now in high school) and the rest of the DigiDestined crossed over to the Digital World and nearly three years since frenzied final battles between warring factions. With the gate to the Digital World closed, time continues to pass, until the adventure Digivolves once again.” Unfortunately, being from a different generation of Digimon, it’s unlikely that Guilmon or Renamon will make an appearance in this film. Pity! Anyway, look for this exclusive screening in one of 300 cities on September 15th.

More Furry Netflix Cartoons

In-Fur-Nation - Sat 2 Jul 2016 - 01:12

In addition to the aforementioned Llama Llama, we’ve learned from Cartoon Brew that Netflix have announced five more animated series coming to their streaming service over the next couple of years. At at least two of them are especially of note for furry fans: “Animated action-comedy Skylanders Academy follows the heroic adventures of the Skylanders team, a ragtag group of heroes with unique elemental skills who travel the vast Skylands universe, protecting it from evil-doers. They achieve victory by setting aside their egos, learning to trust one another and fighting as one to maintain harmony and balance in the land.” And yes, Spyro is among them. The series is set to premier on Netflix this coming fall. Then, there’s this: “Inspired by the Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron [from Dreamworks Animation — ye ed-otter], Spirit Riding Free follows the heartfelt journey of a wild mustang who could not be tamed. A whole new generation will experience all the daring adventures when Spirit meets a girl named Lucky whose courage matches his own. Together they push limits, harness the power of friendship and discover what it means to be free.” Look for Spirit Riding Free to premier sometime in 2017.

Market news

Ongoing: Fred Patten’s next anthology for FurPlanet, The Dogs of War, is looking for original furry military-themed stories “preferably of 4,000 to 20,000 words.” The emphasis should be on military actions, not politics; Fred notes that despite the title, he’s looking for all kinds of anthropomorphic animals, not just dogs. Payment: ½¢ per word, on publication. Deadline: October 1, 2016. (Read the submission call.)

ROAR 8, FurPlanet’s annual general audience anthology, will again be edited by Mary E. Lowd. Next year’s theme is “Paradise.” It will be open for submissions from September 1, 2016 through February 1, 2017. (Read the submission call.)

Laura “Munchkin” Lewis’s charity poetry anthology, Civilized Beasts, is accepting submissions for a 2016 volume.

The Lottery – Furry, by Karen Ranney – Book Review by Fred Patten

Dogpatch Press - Fri 1 Jul 2016 - 10:01

Submitted by Fred Patten, Furry’s favorite historian and reviewer.

41vGf3jdd5L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_The Lottery – Furry, by Karen Ranney
Seattle, WA, CreateSpace, April 2016, trade paperback $9.95 (232 pages), Kindle $2.99.

This book seems to have drifted in to this furry review site by mistake. Despite its title, and its label as Book 1 of The Furry Chronicles trilogy, it’s a werewolf novel – or more precisely a woman’s paranormal romance novel.

That’s probably natural since Karen Ranney is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of women’s romances; not a furry author. In fact, the three volumes of The Furry Chronicles are a spinoff of Ranney’s previous The Montgomery Chronicles. “You’ll see what happens to Opie, meet Antonia, and follow Torrance’s adventures as well.” (Ranney’s website)

Torrance Boyd is a young junior vet working at Alamo Veterinary Services LLC in San Antonio. She’s a soft touch for all of the stray dogs that an elderly do-gooder finds and brings in there. Torrance can’t bring herself to throw them out again, so she personally pays for heartworm testing, flea dipping, and other medical expenses; which keeps her perpetually broke.

She has another problem:

“I didn’t know, for certain, that dogs shared a communicative bond, but as a species I wasn’t far removed from them. You see, I’m a Were. Ever since my younger brother asked me if that meant we were weird I’ve called myself a Furry, a label that doesn’t endear me to either my family or my friends. At least, those who knew what I was.

Only another Were could recognize me, but even then, we didn’t go around acknowledging each other in public. In other words, we don’t sniff each other. We don’t even venture near the nether regions in our four legged form. Can you imagine meeting the eyes of someone whose butt you just checked out when he was furry?” (p. 5)

That’s background. Her problem is that she recognizes one of the stray dogs that the do-gooder brings in, a handsome Alaskan Malamute/Siberian Husky mix, as Joey Palmer, an adolescent acquaintance who is also a Were.

“A Were transforming into a dog was unheard of, impossible. Of course, humans would say the same thing about being a Were. It’s all in your perspective.” (p. 7)

Werewolves in Ranney’s world are more family-oriented than in the usual werewolf stereotype:

“In the Were culture the women get to name the offspring and Mom went a little wild. My name is Torrance. My brother’s name is Austin. My poor sister is San Antonio. That’s her first name. She’s spent the last twenty-one years explaining that our parents had a geographical fetish. She’s more tactful than I am. I’ve told the truth: we were named for the city in which my mother thought we were conceived.” (p. 12)

How is this different from some families among ordinary humans? Ranney spends pages and pages describing the secret supernatural societies within human civilization, including the old Were families of Europe before they immigrated to America. Aside from revealing that there are also openly-known vampire families while the Weres are still “in the closet”, it sounds mostly like regular American 21st-century culture. There are Were and vampire families just like there are Jewish and Mormon and Seventh-Day Adventist societies. The main difference is that they strictly keep their differences and they don’t intermarry.

Ranney seems contradictory as to just what her Weres are. They don’t seem to do anything except turn into wolves and go for lupine romps through the neighborhood together.

“The Hunt isn’t particularly erotic, but the change does something to the human hormone system. You’re supercharged with friendly feelings. You want to go out and hug the world. When you come back to yourself as human, you want to share those emotions with the first person you see.” (p. 34)

This is the first time I’ve ever seen turning into a Werewolf described as making you friendlier and more caring. There is an obvious problem here that Ranney is aware of, and addresses:

“We rarely gave into the need to mate on four legs. Of course, there were always exceptions, like Joey Palmer, for example, who was known to nip at the neck of his partner and mount her while she was still a Were.” (ibid.)

I can see why Torrance’s parents, siblings, and Were friends are annoyed by her referring to herself as a Furry rather than a Were like the rest of them. By the way, the book’s anonymous cover artist has taken a liberty showing Torrance with obvious wolf ears and whiskers if these aren’t visible when she’s human. Especially if she hasn’t turned Were in years.

“I probably should have called 911, but here’s the truth. I’m not a weak Were. I don’t reveal how strong I am to people. Plus, even though I haven’t changed in years, the capacity to do so was still there. I also work out. I do cardio, strength training, and kickboxing, none of which I brag about or reveal to my coworkers.” (p. 44)

What’s the difference between posing as a submissive, helpless female for years and being a genuine submissive, helpless female? Torrance doesn’t seem to know herself.

“I thought I could handle whatever was happening in the clinic, which might have been pure stupidity on my part. My hands were shaking so much when I tried to insert the key that I had to do it twice. Maybe that was a case of my mind trying to tell me that I wasn’t Super Furry.” (ibid.)

Yeah, that’s an example of a strong woman. I’m going to give away a Spoiler here: what happens in the clinic is that Joey Palmer turns back from a dog to a human. (Or a Were in human form.) He’s a naked man in a cage. Naturally, Torrance is curious.

“I pulled off on the side of the road about a mile from the clinic and looked at Joey.

‘What, where, how, why, when, and who?’ I said. ‘Talk to me,’

He didn’t say a word. In fact, he wouldn’t even look at me. Instead, he looked out the passenger window.

‘Tell me what, exactly, you did.’

[…]

‘Come on, Joey.’

‘Why should I tell you?’ He turned and faced me. ‘It’s none of your business.’

Well, that stung, but he was right. Possibly.

‘It became my business when you were picked up as a stray, Joey. I can just imagine what would have happened if anyone else had found you in that cage. Are you going to tell me?’

‘No,’ he said.” (pgs. 46-47)

Twenty pages later people are still telling Torrance “No.” Some assertive woman. Aha! On page 67 we finally get to the plot. And if you want to know what it is, and what the Lottery of the title is, buy the book. It’s paranormal, even if it’s not particularly furry. Torrance sneaks around investigating just like the female amateur detective in the average “cat cozy” mystery novel, and can you doubt that she will get into danger and be rescued by a strong, handsome man/Were who can kiss like a demon? There’s a satisfactory ending, but since this is only Book 1 of The Furry Chronicles, Torrance and her new beau will have further adventures. Read if you’re drenched in feminine hormones.

We open tonight's show with a discussion of whether BDSM power exchange relationships are valid or are simply a sign of mental illness. We reference some of our own advice columns in this discussion, as well as a discussion that took place on Twitter in which we were attacked for our position on this matter.

This was a personal topic for us on the show, as Metriko has been in several relationships centered around D/s, and Viro and Koji are in a long-term committed relationship with heavy D/s mechanics negotiated and in play. We discuss the situation in depth, what we can glean from it, and how to discuss relationship styles you may not agree with.

Our main topic is on our own personal take on D/s relationships: How do we personally identify in the D/s scheme of things, and what do we find works and does not work for long-term happiness. We also address some stray questions and offer some clarifications on topics or terms we might have glossed over previously in this month.

We close out the show with a listener question that asks whether you can be in a successful bisexual polyamorous relationship. The questioner identifies as pansexual and genderblind, and is doubtful as to whether or not this type of arrangement would be successful for them. This is also our first question via audio recording, so that's pretty awesome too!

For more information, including a list of topics, see our Show Notes for this episode.

Thanks and, as always, be well!
