Formic Hivemind indicted by grand jury

Furry News Network - Wed 4 May 2011 - 10:31

Richard Kretovic aka Formic Hivemind

Author: Higgs Raccoon

Formic Hivemind, charged in April with sexually abusing a boy he met over the internet, has been indicted on nineteen charges by a Monroe County grand jury.

It is alleged that Formic Hivemind (the online alias of 19-year-old Richard J. Kretovic) abused the 12-year-old boy after meeting him through Xbox Live. The indictments handed down by the grand jury are for nine counts each of the felonies of first-degree criminal sexual acts and second-degree sexual abuse, and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Kretovic is currently free on $ 50,000 bail. A date for his appearance in Monroe County Court or the state Supreme Court has yet to be set.

[Updated 5/4/2011 - 5:00pm]

From WHEC News:

Kretovic’s lawyer talked about him today.

“Richard is a young man with a long history of intellectual and emotional disabilities and we’re exploring what role that may have played in bringing him before the court today,” Steve Leonardo said.

Leonardo says that might be a factor in the defense for his client. The case was waived to a grand jury.

Pig ears with salmonella risk recalled

Furry News Network - Tue 3 May 2011 - 20:54

[Tip: @Talliy]Via Associated Press:

WASHINGTON (AP) — An Illinois company is recalling pet chews made of pig’s ears because they could be contaminated with salmonella.

One illness, to a dog in Missouri, has been linked to the chews, called Pig Ears for Pet Treats. The product is being recalled by the Keys Manufacturing Co. Inc. of Paris, Ill.

Salmonella can affect animals, and there is risk to people from handling contaminated pet products.

The bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Pets with salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea fever and vomiting.

The pet treats were distributed in Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.

Consumers can return the pet treats to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Furry, the Film

In-Fur-Nation - Tue 3 May 2011 - 01:41

Lindsey Batdorf is a student at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, completing her degree in Digital Film-Making. Recently she completed her thesis film, called Furry. It tells the story of a college student and furry fan, who attempts to explain himself to his friends, fellow students, and his would-be girlfriend. According to the director, “This film is intended to shed a positive light on the furry fandom while also poking some fun at it as well. If you like it, thank you! If you don’t like it for whatever reason, you are entitled to your opinion. Can’t please everyone!” Lindsey has a trailer for the completed film up on Vimeo. Unfortunately, she can’t post the entire film on-line, due to college restrictions, but she says it will be showing up at various film festivals in the near future.

By: CraftyAndy

hoodwinked2titleIt’s a poor man’s Shrek. Rent it at the most, watch it with friend preferably make a drinking game out of it. Thankfully you can’t do it involving puns but could get a buzz off of pop culture references. It wasn’t nearly as bad as the trailer made it look. Some jokes were reworked for the better or removed entirely.

Indyfurcon 2011: Furries of the Lost Ark

Furry News Network - Tue 3 May 2011 - 00:11

Indyfurcon 2011

About the Convention INDYFURCON

IndyFurCon is Indiana’s first convention for fans of anthropomorphic creatures and art. iFC is to be held in the state capital, Indianapolis. Held in the late summer, it gives midwestern furries an event filled weekend to get together with friends and have fun in the middle of the 5 month period that separates Anthrocon and Midwest FurFest.

MORE INFO

WHOOZFUR INC

Whoozfur is derived from the word Hoosier which is the nickname of Indiana natives. years ago, Whoozfur became the unofficial name given to furries in Indiana in 1998 when the internet based social group was created, and still is to this day. We thought it only fitting for the parent company to run IndyFurCon to be named Whoozfur Inc. Founded in 2009, Whoozfur Inc is a non profit 501(c)7 corporation. It’s soul purpose is to organize and produce a convention annualy to showcase anthropomorphic art, creatures, and education. THE MASCOTS

This convention celebrates Indiana. The cardinal is Indiana’s state bird. Our buffalo is from the state seal. Basketball is a long time heritage to many hoosiers. The Indianapolis Colts recently were Super Bowl champions, which is the reason for the football the buffalo holds. The colors of their jerseys are the official state colors from the flag and are also the colors of the Indiana Pacers.

Guest of Honor

The guest of honor for iFC 2011 has been announced:

Tincrash

Noel “Tincrash” Melendez is a furry and transformation artist who works primarily with color or monochrome pencils and inks. He’s been drawing since grade school when he would trace artwork out of comic books where he focused on characters like Optimus Prime and the horse alien from Power Pack. From there he grew to freehand drawing his favorite comic book characters, which started to shift to more anthropomorphic characters in the mid 80′s. By the early 90′s his comic interests, and thus his art, had focused primarily on anthro characters and their stories, which tended to be more light-hearted than the super hero comics of the time. By then he was drawing wholly original characters, such as his fursnona, Tincrash the raccoon.

Science Fiction and Fantasy have always been large influences in his life, and he has been attending Sci-Fi conventions since he was in high school. He has yet to miss a Midwest Furfest, and has attended several other furry conventions where he can often be found in their artist alleys if he’s not in the dealer’s rooms selling commissions for badges, sketchbook, or lose bristol board drawings. Collecting art from his favorite artists, both at conventions and online, has also become one of his driving passions.

Transformation has also been an ongoing fascination and inspiration for Noel. He loves to investigate, through his drawings, the process of a person’s form changing from whatever they were to whatever they might become; but he also enjoys seeing how the person might adapt or deal with being something they weren’t. Constantly drawing transformations has imbued his art with tight, but easy anatomy and fluid poses for an overall cartoony style. However, contrary to most transformation work, his subjects almost universally enjoy, even relish, their transformations unless his commissioners prefer the subject to experience some other emotions.

For 2011, we have selected another excellent Indianapolis-based charity to support:

Southside Animal Shelter Logo

The mission of Southside Animal Shelter is to rescue healthy and treatable dogs and cats at risk of euthanasia, nurture and restore them to happy healthy lives in loving homes, and reserve euthanasia for those animals, in a veterinarian’s professional opinion, who are in a state of terminal suffering or have been determined aggressive. Southside Animal Shelter is a private, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization which receives no government funding from the City of Indianapolis, Marion County, or the State of Indiana.

For more information about Southside Animal Shelter, please visit their website. We also encourage anyone that is able to help them out, whether volunteering (if you’re local), donating (even if you aren’t coming to the con), or even giving a loving home to one of their cats or dogs.

Yes, You Can Get Leprosy From an Armadillo

furryne.ws - Mon 2 May 2011 - 21:09
Editor's note: I have an alt' that's a armadillo. This news will make for some interesting role-playing scenarios.

For years, scientists have speculated that armadillos can pass on leprosy to humans, and that they are behind the few dozen cases of the disease that occur in the U.S. every year. Now, they have evidence. A genetic study published today in The New England Journal of Medicine shows that U.S. armadillos and human patients share what seems to be a unique strain of the bacterium that causes leprosy.

Internet Porn Has Transformed Sexual Desire, Study Finds

Furry News Network - Mon 2 May 2011 - 20:39

Via Fox News

A new book, which analyzes a billion web searches from around the world, highlights the way in which the Internet apparently revolutionized sexual desires, making tastes once regarded as deviant more widespread.

A Billion Wicked Thoughts,” by Ogi Ogas and Sai Gaddam, is billed as the first massive research in the field of collective sexual identity since the Kinsey Reports in the mid-20th century, the New York Post reported.

According to the authors’ research, straight men enjoy a wider variety of erotica than previously thought, including sites devoted to elderly women and transsexuals.

The findings also indicated that straight men prefer heavy women to thin ones and that straight women enjoy reading about and watching romances between two men. Gay men were found to enjoy straight porn in large numbers.

“Sex therapists haven’t known which interests are common and which are rare,” co-author Ogas said. “We probably now know more than ever before … we just let the data tell us where to go.”

Bronyville Episode 002 – Friendship is Not Getting Kicked off the Internet

Furry News Network - Mon 2 May 2011 - 16:36

Author: AppleCider

Dear Princess Celestia,

Today we learned that friendship needs a little bit of tolerance. You may not agree with somepony but that doesn’t mean its okay to exclude them. Also, we found that our community is filled with very warm and caring individuals willing to reach out in their time of need. And finally, we realized that there are no Big Lots in all of Texas selling the little ponies and we should just stop trying.

Sincerely,
Bronyville.

Movie: The Beaver – Opening Friday May 6

Furry News Network - Mon 2 May 2011 - 14:12

Consider for a moment just how unbelievably strange everything about “The Beaver” is. Its lead character can only communicate through a furry puppet he finds in a Dumpster. When the puppet speaks for him, it does so with a bad Cockney accent.

But perhaps the most head-scratching thing about “The Beaver,” opening Friday, is the Oscar-winning talent behind it. Mel Gibson stars alongside Jodie Foster, who also directed. So you have a girl-power icon, famous for films about women taking revenge on the men who’ve wronged them, teamed with a notorious lout who once called a female cop “sugar t – - s.”

If it weren’t reality, it’d make one helluva terrible sitcom.

The long-delayed movie — which backers reportedly ponied up $20 million to make — was mostly complete in 2009. By last summer, principal photography had wrapped and Foster was moving on to reshoots when secretly recorded phone calls of Gibson berating Oksana Grigorieva leaked. In them, Gibson screamed until he was gasping for breath, dropped some choice racist nuggets, called Grigorieva a phonebook-long catalog of names and — well, you’ve heard the tapes.

Anyone who heard those calls imagined Gibson’s career grinding to a halt as every last member of Hollywood society abandoned him. And most did. Except for Foster.

Video: Man With A Mission – Don’t Lose Yourself

Furry News Network - Mon 2 May 2011 - 13:08

Man With A Mission

Rock band Man With A Mission (MWAM) is a very unique band with a mysterious past.

The faces of the band are of wolves instead of humans for example. And in the tradition of bands like Gorillaz, they perform in those personas; however, one thing is certain, they have an amazing sound and lyrics (English & Japaneese) with a message.

They are currently performing around Japan and in the Tokyo area and they have made appreances in Los Angeles, California.  Their new mini album “Welcome To The New World” is on sale now via iTunesamazon and more!

Their story:

Age 19XX, the darkest era of all.

The universe was in the middle of worldwide warfare.

All living beings on earth were losing their faith, losing their future –  just for an egoistic game of which the rulers kept on playing with no end.

At the edge of the world, the genius of all time Professor J. Hendrix(which was pretty good in playing the guitar) was about to complete his masterpiece which he has been working for his life.

The Ultimate Android, MAN WITH A MISSION

Is it a wolf?  Is it a man?

With all the intelligence and super-powers, they were used to accomplish the impossible, and nothing could ever stop them.

Unfortunately, they were born in the wrong era.

The rulers of the world used them to handle the secret maneuvers, asassination, every dark deed that they could think of.

Professor J.  finally noticed what he had made, the sin that he commited to this world.
As a penance to the world, he finally decided to ice them in the Antarctic as they could never awake again.  He also burned that guitar he used so long.

Years passed. Today the world is still not an easy place to be. Global warming, Echonomic crises, Conflicts all over the world, the world was once again facing a crisis.

But who could have imagined? The global warming melted the ice of the Antarctic of which the MAN WITH A MISSION was trapped in.

After their long hybernation, they once again returned to the world.

Are they the good to the world today? Or are they bad news to us again.

We shall know as they have already started their new mission, which nobody could clarify.

MAN WITH A MISSION
once again strikes the world.

Fursuit Builder of the Month: Adorable Foxie

Furry News Network - Mon 2 May 2011 - 12:08

By: Trashville

May 2011

Hello furries! For the very first Fursuit Builder of the Month, I caught up with Clarissa St. Clair of Adorable Foxie and asked some questions about her business. This article is the first of many “Fursuit Builder of the Month” pieces that I plan to do.

First provide a brief description of your history in the furry fandom.

Like most members of the furry fandom, I’ve always enjoyed ‘animal stories’ and cartoons, but I never knew there was a community out there just for all that! I first got involved with the furry fandom in the mid-90′s, when a friend introduced me to the Redwall book series. I loved them, and I wanted more! I joined Redwall-based role-playing groups (on AOL, and Redwall MUCK), and my friends and I would illustrate our role playing sessions. This led to our posting them on furry-related art sites, where we met other people that also made up characters and stories. Eventually it progressed to local furry get-togethers and attending conventions. At my first convention, Anthrocon 2002, I fell in love with all of the costumes and just had to start making my own!

When did you build your first costume and what was it?

My mom and I have always worked together to come up with fun costumes for Halloween, so I am no stranger to costume-building. As far as my first fursuit goes, it was a black fox named “Blackout” – creative, I know. I built the costume over the course of 2002-2003, and I had her ready to go for Anthrocon 2003!

How many fursuits have you been paid to build in total?

To date, I’ve been commissioned for about twelve or thirteen, with a couple of those still currently in the works. In addition to that, I’ve also sold all personal costumes I’ve made except for two, bringing the total of costumes sold up to eighteen. I didn’t take on any commissions until about 2008, which is when I began to dabble in building a costume for a local friend, to be able to tweak it and make fixes as necessary before taking commissions full-time.

What is your construction method of choice for for head building and why?

My method of choice is an all-foam construction, with a balaclava (head-sock) liner. To me, this is the most comfortable method to use, and it looks well-finished. I started out building my first few costumes with plastic mesh or even on a bike helmet, but these heads seemed to take too long, risked damage to the costume (because mesh doesn’t bounce back, while foam does) or to the wearer (yay pokey bits!) but in the end, foam seemed the way to go for me. In my opinion, this method of construction allows me to work the quickest without sacrificing quality, comfort or detail.

What is your average price range?

Currently, my prices range from about $350-$500 for a head, $500-$800 for a partial, and $950-$1200 for a full suit, including the cost of shipping. The final price all depends on many things, like character markings, and finishing details like claws or paw pads, etc. My prices are currently a little on the low side as I build up my commission portfolio, so they are subject to change in the future.

Who was your character favorite to build?

I would have to say, it’s a toss-up. I really love how Kenai Kitty came out, he’s a serval with a TON of hand-sewn markings. The detail came out great! It took me about two months, working full time start-to-finish to put it all together, but the results were worth it. My other favorite character was Kiera Dracorex; her owner provided some fantastic reference to work from, and the color scheme was unique and fun.
In all honesty, though, each new costume I build tends to come out on top as being “my new favorite,” because I am able to watch my skills as a builder progress, and each one comes out better than the last in some way!

What makes you unique as a builder and why should people choose you?

Since I am still trying to find my groove for doing this work full-time, I put 100% of my focus on the current project at hand, and nothing else, so each full costume gets my undivided attention while I am working on it. I don’t crank out multiple costumes at a time, assembly-line style. I also tend to share photos of my works in progress on my Facebook and Twitter pages, and listen to feedback provided by not only the customer, but also people that watch my progress on social media sites, or even my friends and my husband when I’ll ask them, “What can I change?” I highly value the feedback of people that have already purchased work from me, change things that they recommend changing, and constantly work to better myself as a costume builder.
So, while some costumes may take a little more time to be made, rest assured that I am doing my absolute best to provide you with a top-notch product in the end. If there are changes or adjustments that need to be made after delivery, I’m more than willing to work with the customer to be able to ensure their costume comes out on top as far as aesthetics, comfort, and durability are concerned. I’d much rather provide a well-made costume that will last for years to come, than to cut corners just to meet a deadline. I still have some of my early costumes from 2005-2006 running around out there, going strong, and that durability is something I strive for with each new costume I make.

And here’s her site:

Thank you for reading and I will appreciate suggestions for June!

Not sure what I am...

Furry Reddit - Sun 1 May 2011 - 23:44

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this, but I feel like I gotta let this out to people who kinda-sorta understand the mindset.

So, ever since I was little, I had an affinity for dragons. At ten years old I wrote a series of "novels" (they felt long when I was writing them) about a boy who turns into a dragon, but nobody can see him as one. I put myself in them too, but as a very minor character who, also, gains the body of a dragon.

For twelve years now I've felt like I've been wearing the wrong skin. I look in the mirror and I don't see myself, I see a.. well, a young woman. I know it's me, of course, but it feels like I don't make the connection of recognition. I dream of being a dragon, and have had extremely vivid dreams of flying and hunting. I hoard jewelry, and I don't keep it very organized. I have even gotten as far as buying costume wings for myself. I could sketch "myself" if you asked.

I've looked into furry communities. I've looked into otherkin-ism. I don't know where I fit. I feel lost and frustrated and like nobody understands how I feel.
